“[The song is] a portrait of my dad. A lot of people think it’s about a car, but to me it’s about the man behind the car. Our parents are always a mystery, aren’t they?” - Marc Cohn

My dad sold cars right after retiring from the Air Force in 1961, El Paso, Texas. I was 5 but remember the new T-Birds he'd drive home. From the moment I first hear this song in 90 whatever, that's where I go when I hear it. Thanks Marc

This song hurts so much to listen to. I cry every time, remembering the man with the plan and the pocket comb... Every single line is my dad. Every single line makes me smile. Every single line chokes me up... I miss my dad terribly but take comfort in knowing, he's finally driving that silver Thunderbird. Thank you Mr. Cohn.

Thank you so much for putting this video up. It was filmed at my parents’ house in Darien CT 30 years ago, just before they sold it. That’s my bed the little boy lies in, next to my desk, our garage with the fantail window over the door. The buyers of the house made this little red cape into a snooty gray and white colonial - unrecognizable now - I’m as old now as the dad in the video, and my own beloved father’s been gone five years. So much time gone - and so much time brought back. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I grew up in Shaker Heights like Marc Cohn did, and his song captures the essence of my young life here with my Dad and his Buick Wildcat. I drove past our old House on Winslow today after Church, and cried a tear of joy thinking of Marc’s song and picturing my Dad’s Wildcat in the driveway. Many Happy Memories, Dad-may you continue to enjoy your Wildcat Rides in heaven-I am still with you in Spirit every mile of the way…..

I live in Cleveland, and there used to be a karaoke DJ (RIP) named Bill Allen, who was not only a great DJ/KJ, but a hell of a singer, and.......(sniffle, sob), a GREAT friend, and he would sing "Walking In Memphis" to acknowledge Marc Cohn. (There's not a karaoke track for THIS song.) Bill happened to be the DJ/KJ at my "bachelor party", which was some of my wedding party & myself singing karaoke. He was honored to host it, and I was glad to give him the opportunity.

I just saw a random video of a guy talking about how the car and driving was the last refuge for the father to find alone-time and to get some space (from the responsibilities of being a father and husband and breadwinner), which added a lot of nuance to this song for me. A kid is missing his dad, but the dad is missing himself.

The cars name was Hepzibah, out of the bible. The ol' man said he name it that cause it was a blessing if it ran. Thanks again Mr Cohn. You are a blessing too. And thanks for Walking in Memphis..... can not get that song out of my head. Use to play The Snake, by Al Green on my Carnival ride I ran in 1967. Often wondered what ever happened to Mr Green...

A beautifull song, timeless music, enjoyable when one adheres to the genre. when one is young. But, when you truly know the loss of a father, the insight, the healing this song offers, It brings out the best and you do not recall the bad....it is the old man, a cunundrum that tried his best in the best case and left you behind in the worst. I had the fortune to not experiance the worst but still this song helps to bring that father closer and encourage the healingproces of the memory of a boy, who is just a a man and tries to recogcile the perception of a man that he did not never truly knew, to the man that boy has become a man and realizes that the apple does not fall far from the tree. we were just boys once.... yet they tried. through this song we can, or I, can feel the comfort of the good memories, which is all that we have left when he or they are gone. I miss him...very much

I love this Marc Cohn song. I always remember riding with my dad in his gold diesel Mercedes. Now he has some other luxury car; He's a well-to-do real estate man now that he's no longer head of the English Department at Klamath Union High School. I got my education in his academic book room. But we Nelsons inherited some money from Dad's grandpa a Congressman and businessman from Chicago Henry Leonard, part of the maligned 'Daley machine,' who moved to the west coast in time to avoid the political repression framed as a 'bust.'

A Thunderbird was always quite an underrated car, maybe it had the same driving package as the galaxie like a 390 or something like it,it was just bigger than a galaxie but they still couldve ran and drove the same!! One's just got heavier fenders and bigger mass, but it's still a great car to own, safe and they were Ford powered!! I myself like thunderbird hardtops, but that's because i'm a crash phobic so i'd immediately love anycar being hardtop not a T or convertible!! And the way people drive tiday don't help the way you feel when yiu drive!! But that silver Thunderbird's a nice ride, safe smooth and quick!! Very unique car in 1963 64 and 65!! 🦤🦤🦤🦤🦤🦤

Marc cohn really doenst know how give this song meaning. He says this is "more about the man than the car" but honestly it feels more like hes talking more about the grandeur of the car than anything about his father. The song just feels empty and lifeless. Like he wants there to be some soul there but i just cant feel it
