September 22, 2007 PARIS - Marcel Marceau, who put the art of mime on the world stage and brought poetry to silence, has died, his former assistant said Sunday. He was 84. ~ FoxNews.com
This is my small tribute to that famous mime. I don't have much on him except for the video he did with Red Skelton.

I had the rare opportunity to meet him and watch him perform in my 9th grade English classroom with about 20 others in 1980. my teacher was a close friend of his and it was a once in a life time opportunity.. RIP Marcel Marceau ........

He was extraordinarily talented. The ability to make people laugh without even making a sound is something I admire. We can't appreciate it sometimes because we are so used to all this "noise" not just on our media but everywhere really. we need art to "shout" at us in order to pay attention. If a movie doesn't feature enough explosions we find boring. Same goes for any kind of performance. Such a pity! And sure explosions are fun but that's about as much as they will do for you. If just for a moment we leave our comfort zone and allow ourselves to experience something different without being judgmental then maybe we' ll discover that it enriches us and it was actually worth our time. I know few people will ever read this but, well, I had to write it anyway! :)

+ΑΛΙΚΗ ΣΤΥΛΙΑΝΙΔΗ I read it and I agree completely with you. I wish more people today could appreciate wonderful art like this. It was so much fun to watch, even if only on video. I can't imagine how amazing it must have been to have been there for a live performance.

Well, actually, part of his comedy IS the noise--not just the silence that occurs when he doesn't speak, but especially the timing of the music and his own timing, for that matter. Without the noise, there's just a dude making dopey faces. And for that matter, the noises we make with our bodies is something that's integral to his performance style. It calls attention to itself because it's the only thing there. So if you mean "without speaking," then sure that's a talent. But I don't think you quite understand the role that sound plays in this performance. Also? Finish your sentence next time. Unless that was the point, in which case, haha we get it, whatever.

Mime makes your mind work at conjuring up the images of what they are portraying... I find it all fascinating... unlike today where everything is forced fed straight into our brains and leaves no room for any imagination...

Saw him in London in the 80's. He was great. I was impressed by the list of countries he'd played in from the late 40's; especially places that I'd thought were closed to Europeans at the time. Thanks for posting this video.

I saw him perform live in Paris back in 1982, but when buying my seats, I was at first offered very cheap seats, I asked why they were so cheap they said that the seats were behind pillars but even though I wouldn't be able to see I would still be able to hear the performance... I burst out laughing... this was a mime... It was a privilege to see the original mime artist at work...

Look at the expertise he uses in his gestures. He makes you believe what he is doing is real because he acts as if he can see real props. You can almost see the shelf he leans on and the woman he is dancing the tango with. Doing mime well is very difficult to do and Marceau was an absolute master at it!

A true art form is when an artist takes real life and shows it from his perspective. As a photo of a rose can make one marvel at how the photographer captured the realism of the actual flower, seeing a mime of the caliber of Marcel Marceau makes me marvel at how he can capture the realism of daily life completely without words and props. There was no lion, but it was definitely his interpretation of lion tamer. Just like the photographer, he captured real life through his own art.
