It's March and that means it's time for a tour of my front and back deck gardens! It continues to be an abnormally warm year so far and things are much further ahead than normal.

Love this. This gets me so excited for Spring to truly kickstart😍a change I’m doing personally is I’m done with buying/overwintering dahlia tubers, I just run into so many issues + it gets pricey. Instead this year I sowed dwarf dahlias from seed and so far they’ve all germinated and I’m excited to see them grow ❤

You'll have to let me know how they do! I've never tried dahlias from seed before.

Yes! Me neither! You should give some a try, if you can get your hands on a packet. For us Zone 6’ers March is a great time to sow them indoors so they are ready to transplant outside in May😍

I’m in Stillwater MN 4b enjoying a warm winter no sign of tulips or spring bulbs. If space is a premium I would get rid of one rhubarb hopefully the other one will produce enough for a pie. Every year I’m amazed how a garden is bare and by summer they look like a work of art. Thanks for the tour.

I am near Montreal Canada, zone 5B and the temperatures have been particularly mild. In fact I never had to wear my winter coat and had only 2 mornings where I was cold. My town organize a snow caslte competition every year but this year, they had to add sand castle or any other material castle. that being said, we almost always get a late march/early april snowstorm so I am building a cheap low tunnel on my garden beds and see if I could plant my runonculus and lisianthus.

It's been such a weird winter. As someone who prefers warm weather, I have been enjoying, but it definitely seems to through off the plants.

I think you could fit a few more raised beds. I know you wanted thoughts on the Rhubarb, but I just keep looking at your setup and realize you could scoot out the smaller containers and get in more, larger raised beds and get even more space to grow. There is an amazing new patio corn type from Burpee that I will be trying in containers this season. Anyway, I think you could just line the entire area and get even more raised beds in the center, maybe even 4 total raised beds in the center. Maybe put your apple trees in a dedicated raised bed. Thoughts come to mind of Biltmore conservatory style raised beds with narrow walk paths.

I'm always down to try to get more raised beds to fit! I have to be careful of weight, but I think I have space for at least two more on the front deck.

Keep 1 rhubarb. If you don't end up enjoying it you can pull it later on. It's only 1 pot right? :)

Hi! I think you should keep just one rhubarb plant… think you’ll regret it if you don’t. Also, I’m not getting success starting pansies indoors so far. Do you have a video on pansies? How did you get yours to start coming up already? Should I direct sow? I’m in Oak Lawn, Chicago SW suburb.

I have never started pansies from seed, I always get them from the garden center. I would give direct sowing a try. That always works better for me for my cool crops.

@@ChicagoGardener Do you think I can sow them now or wait until 4/1?

Question - around 14:00 you are showing pots that have bulbs and you said you kept them in your garage. Were they under a light? I’m wondering if a light is necessary? I planted some bulbs in pots in the fall and left them outside and the squirrels ate all the bulbs so I’m wondering if I can try again for next year but keep the pots in the garage. Thanks.

No light! I only move them to the light once they sprout.

I was wondering - if you don't have any potting soil on hand - can you refresh a container with prior year potting soil by just adding some organic slow release fertilizer or is it necessary to top dress a portion with all new potting soil? Thanks!

I usually add compost to my old soil but slow release fertilizer should work as well!
