Shout out to my subscribers. I've moved up within the company so I don't do any work in the field any longer, however here is a new video with old stuff. I hope you enjoy it.
Fun fact: March time was used because the “beat” set an unconscious cadence. Just like dancing to the beat of a drum, the March time rate set a pace for the public to move quickly during an evacuation. Notice in most of my videos featuring March time that either myself or others are walking in step with the horns.
And to squash some rumors I've seen in some comments: I'm in the US, not Canada... This is my only KZfaq channel and I don't have others pretending to be others... I didn't get fired from SimplexGrinnell... I didn't get arrested... horns are not bells… I prefer dogs (especially beagles) over cats however I do like cats and no, I haven’t used cats in any of my videos.
Also a shoutout to my compadre ‪@safetech‬ for killing it with his videos. Subscribe!
I appreciate all of you who share an interest in fire/life safety!

Good to see a video from you! I used to watch your original videos from 15 years ago when I was in elementary school, and it really inspired me as a kid, so I just wanted to thank you very much for making those videos and inspiring me and probably so many others. I didn’t end up working for Simplex or any similar companies like I wanted to back then, but did go on to become an engineer intern (currently). Thank you for what you do!

Oh man those debates. In the end I think it came down to the old analog timers that (I presume) drove the march time cards in the 2001, and their loose tolerances. IIRC, in your OG video, it almost split the difference between 90 & 120. But, you know, internet nerds and pedantry. Especially with our modern expectations of precise digital timings. Kids these days don’t know how easy they have it there

One actually has the FLUSH plate which is super cool! I also programmed my homemade panel to do the slower what people call 90bpm March and they sound awesome on it.

Welcome back. That’s cool that you have the 4051s from your school. I wonder if people keep the old spec sheet when they upgrade the system. My dad’s school used to have Simplex 4903-9221s and 4904-9138s. The system was replaced in 2012 with a Silent Knight system with P2Rs and SRs. I found part of the Fire alarm drawing on the district website and that’s how I found out about the old fire alarms. I’m trying to find out if there’s more on the system. If I’m correct there should’ve been Simplex 4903-9221Hs since the school had a pool and they would use the H suffix for high humidity and I think the high humidity models were made for pools. I don’t know yet but I’m trying to find out.

My first elementary school had 2901-9838 simplex horns on 4903-9101 strobe plates. System was on continuous. In around 2014 or so they were replaced with ceiling mount truealerts inside and wall mount truealerts outside. What baffles me is that that the alarms inside were set to code 3 but the ones outside were on continuous still.

I know when I was a projectionist at 8 screen movie theatre in a shopping mall/office building the Edwards system was a staged fire alarm. Stage 1 was 60 bbm and Stage 2 was 120 bbm. The people the the auditorium didnt hear stage 1 but we did in our offices, projection booth, mall, office tower after I think after 10 minutes it would go into stage two and it would sound everywhere...the projectors would stop...house lights come on and ushers would direct people to the nearest exits. Stage 1 was like an early warning. We used it to get ready to evac people. Anyways very interesting stuff. I am an apprentice electrician now

I had a couple 24 volt 4051s and the volume screw was incredibly effective on those. When it was all the way tight the horn emitted a muffled hum about as loud as a dryer buzzer. But, unscrew it a quarter turn and it got really loud and raspy.

Looks nice! On the older pre-2001 Simplex systems (like the 4247, 4208 and 4207) "March Time Rate" was done with an old-style coding wheel that would be mounted in the panel during construction/installation. The 4208 system at my first elementary (now K-8) school had TWO such coding wheels installed. I'm not sure why they initially did that, as when the school was built in 1974 the 4051 horns just sounded on Continuous while the 4050-80 light plates flashed via the coding wheels. But then some time in the 80s the system was configured so that both the horns and lights operated on a Slow March Time (like around 20bpm). Too bad it's all gone now (they just have System Sensor SpectrAlert Advance horn/strobes installed after the old 4208 panel began failing in early 2015.)

I used to watch your videos as a kid! My high school has a rare Simplex 4247-2 with 6 volt 4050s all over the building, and a lone STR series bell. The intitiating devices are 4251-20s and 4255-1s. There are also two 4251-30s; one is missing the whole glass portion; (the frame, hammer, and glass panel); the other one still has the frame intact. The system is still going strong. Do u know anything about the Simplex 4240 series panels? Did u also save the rare AF IBM 4201-4 and the bells in the system from that video?

I just have to ask, if Simplex 2001's did 120 march time, then how come 4002s also did 120 march, but sounded faster? because with a 4002 and a 2001, i would guess that there would be the same kind of voltage drop? idk. Please correct me if I'm wrong
