This scene shows us the different tactics of the chinese and mongolians. Kublai Khan is trying to terrify his ennemy, and Sidao is trying to introduce the doubt in the ennemy mind. It's a wonderful scene because it shows us the art of diplomacy in two different cultures and approach: Chinese and Mongolian. I hope you liked it.

For once, the word "underrated" is being used correctly. Usually people misuse it to refer to shows as popular and critically acclaimed as Breaking Bad or The Wire. It gets tiresome. But Marco Polo was critically panned and never found a large audience, and was cancelled due to how expensive it was to produce. And it is truly correct to say it is very underrated. The critics never gave it a proper chance, with many defaulting to a false "white savior" narrative that only shows they didn't watch much of the show.
@MalakianM2S
@MalakianM2S 10 ай бұрын
@@Brendissimo1 The writing was lazy , most of the time abusing cliffhangers and erratic and out of character behaviour to create drama out of thin air. It had a nice production value, but that was really the main feature of the show, the acting was mediocre to say the least, apart from a couple of instances, specially the lead. It's not underrated, it was a weak show. It had some charismatic characters and people enjoyed them, I watched the whole thing because I enjoy the setting, but it wasn't that hard to realize that this show wasn't going to be a long lasting one.

I love that this show doesn't shy away from rulers being brutal back then. There's a legit fear that modern audiences might lose empathy for characters who would calmly order atrocities. Vikings had a similar problem. Your main character simply walks up and slaughters people who did them no harm, not many modern people want to associate with that. But both shows made it work.

One of the biggest themes of war is how grey it is. Context matters and we are shown a narrative from one protagonists view. At the end of the day, neither is truly evil - they simply have different goals, no reasonable recourse for compromise, and the power to try to achieve those goals no matter what (war, basically). It’s a glimpse into the unyielding nature of humanity and something that still exists today, if you look for it.

Jia was evil in the eyes of Song and its subjects, and Kubilai was already one of the Khans and even Yuan emperors who understands Chinese culture the best. @kunalmishra9463
@kunalmishra9463 3 жыл бұрын
@@JewTube001 I disagree, as horrible as that might sound at first. Death and destruction are not inherently evil -- again, perspective, context, and intent matter. In the show (I'm not 100% sure about real life, but this is a general statement I'll make), the Mongols had broader goals and ambitions, centered around a growing empire and wishes to "control more" and "have more power", concepts cemented by the actions they took to secure their future. They said, we're *going to get* from where we are now to where we want to be, no matter the cost. Indeed, that was war and destruction but it's a very similar thing to what countries have literally always done. England wasn't evil for wanting to control the colonies... they just had differing goals and fought for what they both wanted. Even the South wasn't inherently evil (despite the moral reprehensibility of slavery) during the Civil War -- again, they wanted one thing, the North and abolitionists wanted another, and the result was the bloodiest years in America's history. The list of analogous examples goes on. In each of these cases, including the Mongols, my argument is that death and destruction weren't the primary *intent* of the Mongols actions and desires, simply a consequence of conflict. If they were the primary intent, I'd argue that is much closer to "evil" than as collateral damage -- in the clip, the Mongols offer two realistic paths -- peace, albeit surrender in an unthinkable/dishonorable way, or death and destruction, but the end goal was the same: getting whatever they wanted.
@JewTube001
@JewTube001 3 жыл бұрын
@@kunalmishra9463 Then that is simply evil, there is no other way to describe it. If I treated you in this way, to steal everything from you, to rape your wife, behead you and enslave your family - then you would only see this as evil. There's nothing justifiable about the intent to kill, rape and loot en masse. And that very much is the intention here, the best you can seem to argue is that a genocide is 'grey' only because the perpetrators were acting selfishly rather than committing a genocide just for the sake of it. But great acts of evil don't happen randomly, they happen because of people that think they way you do.

Jia Sidao was the last Prime Minister of the Southern Song Dynasty. He was depicted to be deceitful and cowardly by almost all accounts of Chinese history. During his reign, he mainly employed a policy of appeasement towards the Mongol hordes to no avail. Then, when a total war broke out between the Chinese and the Mongol empires, he led the Song army to a decisive defeat. The problem was, that he had always wanted to bow to the Mongols instead of fight against them, he only went to lead because of the stress of opinions on the Chinese imperial court.
