This guy is a force of nature. He plays better all the time and looks twenty years younger than he really is. Go Marcus.

I saw Marcus at a live clinic about 15 years ago when I played guitar for the most part. A buddy of mine was a bass player and convinced me to go with him. No joke - I went to my apartment after the clinic, grabbed my guitar, traded it for a bass at Guitar Center and have never looked back! Marcus is the man!

This video and others featuring Marcus Miller need to become a collection at the Smithsonian, they're such a deep, precious wellspring of musical wisdom, experience and sheer humanity.

I think what makes Marcus Miller great is that he has been a student of Music throughout his career, learning from other artists he worked with. He is a real musician and humble about his craft.

Can’t wait till Marcus writes an autobiography and records the audio version. He should do it in front of a live audience. His stories are hilarious and his comedic timing, impeccable

Marcus Miller is the best. Everything about him is awesome- his stories, enthusiasm, wisdom, teaching, and his playing. He just loves music and everything about it, and you can feel and hear it in his talks and playing. Can’t say enough about MM.

Marcus has been a first-call bassist not only because of his immense talent, skill, and experience, he is a very cool person and always serves the song, not himself!!! Even though he has PHENOMENAL CHOPS, he's all about the groove!!! He dropped some serious knowledge and advice!

The drummer and pianist adapted quickly to the style. They've got "Experienced Musician" written all over them. It was impressive the way the drummer only adjusted the hi-hat and snare to match the style Marcus was playing and then didn't miss a beat or the fills. Same for the pianist. Him being able to play soft chords and little accent notes as Marcus really dropped off (around 40mins) and still being in the right key was really impressive

They were all feeling it and using dynamics as pro musicians that's what we do and how we create a groove or vibe even if we've never met or played with each other before. But yeah no doubt these guys are a prime example of seasoned professional hired guns (obviously Marcus included as a career side man before he had the credits to do his own thing) who know how to play to the music and support as opposed to showing off their own creativity as the highlight of the music and making the music all about them (easy to do in my opinion any closet musician can make great music on their own... playing as a unit and leaving the other musicians the appropriate space and tone is an art in itself) but yeah...playing for miles Davis at that young of an age (19 or 20?)... wow. And I feel.like he already got his ass kicked and paid his dues before that..miles pretty much let him do his own thing and make his own groove. I bet it was more work for him doing studio work for singers and musicians/bands that he didn't know or hadn't heard before. That's the real deal journey to being a complete musician, being able to hear someone's music and hear and understand what your instrument needs to do to support the music not necessarily what you think is cool or is going to impress musicians of the same instrument or make you stand out. The music is a higher power than any one musican (subjectively) can obtain on their own and requires more than one musican to conjure the "magic" when the music is really happening. Basically chemistry. Doesn't have to be the greatest musicians on their own to make the best music. To that point the greatest musicians in the world could make the worst music in the world if they're not on the same page and don't have chemistry. Again it's a unit or group effort and you're only as good as the musicians you're playing with and everybody has to listen to each other and give each other the proper space or support when appropriate. It's all in what you're going for I guess. Some people like the most dissonant toned music or off rhythm odd time signature music (that's actually a whole different subject and off topic) but when two instruments are playing in the same register or their frequencies are too close (at least for us in the bass clef) it creates a noid (when two same notes in the same octave actually cancel each other and is unheard by the human ear, why I'm picky about keyboard players and how they use their left hand and play as a unit as opposed to playing solo pieces where they have all the sonic space to do whatever they please) the result is mud or clashing frequencies that our ears don't perceive musically

I could listen to people improvising on the bass, drums and keyboard all day and not get tired of it. The perfect combo of groove, melody and harmony with just 3 instruments. The bass is far more versatile than people give it credit for.

I agree with you, Alan Holford! Difficult to believe that Marcus Miller is 62 years "young!"😃 He's made quite the brand and career for himself as he's had the rare ability to have had tremendous success not only as a consummate musician, composer, and producer but also businessman. He's been able.to balance art and commerce--a very delicate pairing. I had the pleasaure of watching him perform live a few years ago and I could tell that he's just as engaging and down to earth on stage as he is in the copious interviews he's given that are shown here on KZfaq!🙂 Thanks for your great comment. Blessings to you, Marcus Miller, and all!
