The England and Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford has been speaking about his own experiences of poverty and being short of food as a child.
He was describing his childhood as he campaigned for the government to provide free school meal vouchers for vulnerable children throughout the school holidays.
He's written to every MP for support after helping to raise £20 million for food for low income families during the lockdown.
Fiona Bruce presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Elaine Dunkley.

James you’re funny if you think that’s the only thing he’s donated to in his life. He’s come from poverty and gone into an extremely competitive field and deserves to earn his keep for his whole family. Sure they earn a disgusting amount but it’s not up to you to decide what they do with it. Buy houses and cars and that’s it? Cool. Lift your whole family out of poverty then try and make a real difference to the area he grew up in and the country as a whole? Nah that’s awful mate

That’s true, but perhaps don’t have 5 kids and the problems will decrease. It’s hard supporting 1 child never mind 5, the parents need to take responsibility for this, society cannot support people choosing to have a ton of children nor is it responsible for a number of reasons. Also we need tougher action on both parents providing support for their children, too many dads (and some moms) walk away and leave the state and kind people to pick up the pieces. If everyone does their bit then child poverty should not be happening in 2020, let’s not avoid the difficult questions and place the blame elsewhere as no one action can resolve the problems, all faults need to be addresses.

Maybe he didn’t fund it all himself but he’s doing more than the ones moaning about it. Hes done well in the respect that he didn’t become rich and forget his roots and struggles. @Owen Kaz You mentioned the problem in your first few words, 'single parent'. It is extremely difficult to raise children as a single parent, even just one, never mind 5! All of the other problems stem from this. If you ignore this then you are wasting your time. There is no grater responsibility than having children, a discussion needs to be had regarding not supporting your children and having too many to support, once this is under control, real support can be provided to children who need it and it will stop single parents from being trapped on social support which is hugely damaging for everyone.

When at work on the "kiosk" at our well known supermarket, we have to deal with various problems (duty manager). One of the many frequent problems arises when responsible, hard up parents complain that the free school meal vouchers cannot be exchanged for tobacco or alcohol, they also buy several scratch cards and top up their phones, these people really need vouchers for meals as they are so short of cash. So if you work on the front line and see this it becomes apparent that few people require "free school meals"

@MrStig691 Ah yes, because unless there’s privatisation and an incentive for a small group of resource hoarders to make profit, everything is illogical. We need electrical and water companies to continue extorting the rest of the population while their executives continue to eat bonuses for their hard work. Do you even hear yourself.

Don’t keep having kids you can’t afford. I know it’s not that simple, and things change. But there are people that take the piss without consequence. It’s unfair on their own children being put in that situation. It’s horrible having to have free dinners, it kills your self esteem. It spells out your home situation in front of your peers. It’s horrible to be hungry at school. But parents play a part too!! Take responsibility for your own actions and children. It’s a hard one because kids should be fed properly to thrive. But also if you know they will be, there’s no deterrent to keep passing on the buck. He comes across as a very grateful, grounded guy. I hope he stays this way. If he does he’ll stand out of the crowd and be a National treasure.

Saint Don No mate, I’m from, what was the largest council estate in Europe. I’ve had free school meals when my father was made redundant from working down the mine. Just for the record I’ve served this country through the forces for 15 years. Now I work for my local council. I come face to face with people everyday. I work with people who need free meals. I also see people having non stop kids that they clearly cannot afford. Fact. Like one I’ve just come from. 2 bedroomed flat with four people in at the min, with one on the way. So I think your assumptions are a bit out pal. What’s your experience?? I’m also a single dad(child lives with me full time) and I own my own home. Your missing my point that things do happen out of the blue, or ordinary. But some people don’t help their own situations. I’m also not saying they shouldn’t. Maybe free meals and university for ALL people.

5 kids. Minimum wage? We need to be responsible and put off having children until we can afford them. Why should the government always have to pay the tab? Britain is the obese champion of Europe so how many people are really suffering hunger? I'm often hungry but that is usually a feeling i can suppress and still maintain a normal body mass.
