This is the problem with brushed racing which is why brushless took over and is overall much cheaper to run and has none of the hassle of brushed motors. The cheapest class to race at the moment is probably the FWD class as it uses a controlled ESC and Motor with rev limit, batteries don't make much difference as traction is limited by the use of a fairly hard treaded control tyre. The 12th scale classes have a big issue which is it uses 1s lipo or 4 cell battery which isn't used in any other race class and needs a special 1s ESC if running brushless. The 4wd 17.5 touring class has also gone to control electronics for the 2024 BRCA series. I don't think foam tyre racing has any viable future they are also not really something a beginner can easily use when staring out

even just a battery upgrade to lipo makes a noticeable difference 😊

2s lipo and brushless is the future imo , could easily make a certain motor/esc the only legal combo to keep costs down

LiPo batteries work different to NiMH when it comes to power delivery/discharge. It's more like a shelf when you look at it on a graph, the batteries give maximum performance right until their cutoff point, whereas NiMH packs gradually lose performance as they discharge. It's the one reason I prefer brushless motor and LiPo systems for planes, helicopters and drones. Recently I've converted my 1/10 scale buggies to brushless.

Great racing! I love the "stock" racing so everybody is on an equal playing field but I also think there should be a full custom,where you can race what ever you can squeeze in the mini shell dimensions while keeping it real looking or scale (no just putting a mini shell on a lunchbox) although that would be terrible😜 home made custom chassis and whatever else ...just for funzies👍

I didn’t have the cleanest race that night but I was running a broken in K21 and I felt like a sloth on the straights which is frustrating. Like it’s been said it’s a false economy I’ve got a good £60 worth of brushed motors in my box. Hence I’m joining the experiment with a cheap £30 set up, so less £ thank the traditional set up. Last week was a learning curve, I even ran 1 race at 100% as I ran out of time to make changes after swapping chassis but I finished the race with no holes in any walls. Hoping to dial in the feel and response of the car this week and my aim is just to hit close to my PB lap time. Only time will tell.

WOW, great race and awesome finish! My absolute favorite race is where you're swapping back and forth from corner to corner as clean as you can, that always puts a huge smile on my face at the end of the race. I remember racing 1/12 scale 30 years ago, and at the time I only raced the stock class as the mod class was a battery battle and I didn't want to put the cash in to get the best cadmium batteries. Also, brush motors back then always had to be cleaned regularly ... I still have my com lathe in storage for the mod motors (for my 1/10 off road CATs and Cougars). I did dip my motors in water to clean them while plugged into a battery, then disassemble them and put drops of singer oil in the bearings between races and lathing the comm. Also had to kill the batteries between each run and recharge them so had multiple batteries at the time. I'm going to watch a few more of your vids now to find one to share with my local mate who always wanted to do a 1/12 mini race as he drove a mini here in Vancouver BC Canada to and from work and play. 30 years on, I'm now back on the scene as of last year with my 13 year old son, and we're LOVING racing 1/10 buggy on indoor office carpet. We help setup the track the night before, and help tear it down the moment the last main is run. The modern technology is so much better than back then with the brush motors and cadmium batteries ... now we run brushless with LiPos and he can go out there for almost 20 minutes with no apparent power loss! I remember back in the day for 1/10 it was a struggle to finish a 4 minute race (8 min for 1/12), as we gently put the car down on the track after plugging the battery in, not touching the throttle till the buzzer went in fear of not finishing the race. The brushless motors are so much easier to maintain now too, as there's no worry about replacing brushes or using a lathe to smooth the comm, and they last forever! Maintaining the cars is now every few months at our level of skill rather than every other heat. Wow excellent video. Clearly the lipo/brushless car doesn’t necessarily deliver faster laps. It does make racing more enjoyable, less wizardry, and also better for the planet as a lipo and brushless motor will last many years. NIMH’s and brushed motors are replaced all the time to remain competitive.

I think a certain amount of your frustration is warranted but I like a brushed set up. I like it because there is still a lot of "tweeking" that costs nothing and does get results. Ps when you start down the road of brushless you can still run NiMh pack and speedo without going lipo. You will always get a boost even using a brushed motor if you run a lipo because of the higher c rating. But you will also find there is "tweeking" with brushless motors that does yeld results over stock.

GT12 electrics are a pain due to the lack of 1s esc choice. 2s shorty lipo with 21.5 or 25.5 might be an option? Glad to see you trying out new things!

Been hope things are good, great video as always, this has popped up on my local clubs Facebook page, like to see what everyone opinions are on there, top racers are also going through motors like nothing, would like to try this in a fun night at the club, didn’t see a link to the combo, could you point us in the right direction

the mardave class need to get with the times,guys buying 10+ motors at a time to pick the best one and going thru a dozen motors a year,its a false economy when you can have a stock brushless last years,

WOW that brings back memories not only the cars but the way you drive. I used to do the same thing get so focused on the competition that if I got past someone after a battle I would almost immediately crash. LOL.. 40 odd years ago we were running 4 cell of Sanyo (Panasonic cells only allowed in the open class) Nicad power a mechanical speed controller and foams on a wooden floor. Stock motors and brushes only allowed. I'm surprised that a modern version wouldn't be as you have tried out even may be go to a single lipo cell as they would still be cheap to run and always need a compromise for the odd extended time race. I learnt how to race with them even though I was running 1/8 nitro at the time. But changes to modern electronics would defeat one of the biggest joys/pains with the hobby and that's the prep. I spent way to many hours working on model cars back in the day and never really truly mastered everything required for hassle free racing.

There's a few things you can do. 1. Have a rotation of batteries, that you swap out throughout the race, this will prolong their lifespan, rather than peaking and racing the same pack. 2. Motor cleaning, brushes and commutators get dirty and wear out over time, use a commutator lathe to get some fresh copper and clean the oxidation from the contact points, don't forget to clean and lubricate bearings. If it's a modified motor, this is much easier and replacing brushes is a cinch too. 3. Use the correct wire gauge for your power system, not only will it make things more reliable, you'll be getting maximum performance from the kit.

Alfie-lee loved that race but did say to me that your car was faster than his down the straight that's why he had to keep tight in the corners and sometimes too tight lol. We race with old tyres, 2 batteries (1 old 1 new) 2 motors (always have a spare) and a £20 handset proper budget racing just to get him out enjoying himself and all i will say is in a final his car will double in width to keep in front of anyone on the same lap as him as that's free not £££s. For us to buy another new battery is £20 and another motor is £12 and 2 sets of wheels and tyres is £13 so we may just bite the bullet and go brushless lipo set up for around the same price if that's the way it's going to go.

It would be more of a level playing field if we could all run brushless/Lipo.

the club could designate a sub £70 brushless setup,still use the stock 4 cells if needed + control the tyres to 50/35 altho thats not really an issue i dont think and i think jobs a good un,not everyone has the time,money or equipment to buy and test dozens of motors in which is supposed to be a cheaper end of the scale racing format,brushless i think would bring it right back where its supposed to be..either that or people have to use hand out motors which opens up another can of worms.. ive been racing since 1990 in various offroad and formats and 1/10th offroad was horrible back before brushless in the sense it was all about batteries and motors,if you didnt have any contacts or were lucky enough to be a sponsored driver like myself then the chances of you getting a quick car(v the factory guys) were limited,now of course there is more power than you can use which is a good thing as it levels the playing field a little.

This is a rabbit hole this class should not go down gt12 made the same mistakes and that’s what killed it off The beauty of the class it’s simple for everyone to do beginners and pros We do simpler tricks with brushless motors and lipos in other classes I know people who will buy 5+ brushless motors to strip apart and make one fast motor people buy brand new lipos for every meeting This is just a fact of stock racing and it will never change no matter what motor and battery’s you run because it’s stock racing any little power advantage you can get over the competition makes a massive difference

The fast guys are always gonna be fast at any racing it doesn’t matter if it’s brushed racing or brushless it’s more about how much actual time you want to put in but for the ease I would say brushless is the way to go all the brushed motors add up and plus you don’t burn your fingers as much with brushless

I know these arnt mardave but west kent car club now have a brushed & brushless classes for Tamiya minis . I raced a Tamiya truck last week & 2 Core21 motors burnt out next years rules allow a Brushless setup . even Scalextric type cars are going Brushless . personally see no future in Brushed motors

I think it’s a great idea and I will share this video… and probably do my own in sympathy. But…. Why 13.5 turned down to 47%. Why not try a 21.5 fixed timing and a small 60A esc. Then there will be less possibility of the Popalong “benders” scenario

I race at RVRCCC in Leyland on Friday nights. I say race, i turn up and have a go. I cant get more than 10 laps whereas the A racers are getting 15+ laps everytime and are miles faster than my car. I dont understand why. Iv been racing now for nearly 12 months and i have made improvements but nothing like the A racers...
