'Mardi Gras' is French for "Fat Tuesday." It is that period of time right before Ash Wednesday and the forty days of Lent.
What is it and where did it come from? Mardi Gras goes back to Europe and remember, Europe had deep Christian roots, and the church was woven into European culture. And people used to celebrate right before Ash Wednesday, because they knew that for forty days we would enter into this period of fasting and abstinence to get ourselves ready for Holy Week, The Passion of the Lord, and the great celebration of Easter.
In particular, in France, Mardi Gras has its roots, and as the French began to colonize and came here, so to, Mardi Gras, as a celebration, took root - particularly in New Orleans, but throughout the South. Even the particular aspects of the Mardi Gras, such as the use of masks, can be traced back to Christian roots. There were deep divisions according to class in Europe, and the mask made it possible for people to celebrate Mardi Gras together, regardless of caste or class.
Now, remember, Christianity proclaims that we are brought together, and there are no divisions among us in Jesus Christ. Similarly, the use of torches and fire have religious symbolism, but unfortunately, Mardi Gras, especially as we have moved away as a culture from God, has also become known to be associated with immorality and debauchery.
And as Christians, we can not participate in that, but can we celebrate Mardi Gras? Of course, we can! Enjoy it; have fun. If there's a parade, march in the parade; but do so with dignity, because you are a Christian. Enjoy good food, and yes, a few glasses of wine. The Psalms tell us that wine was created to make men and women's hearts marry. So if you're so inclined, there's nothing immoral about it.
Remember what we're doing - we're having fun. And having fun and being a Christian are not at odds with one another. One of the things we can do, as Christians in a west that has all but forgotten God, is to re-Christianize it. You see it's been a part of the Christian approach to culture from the very beginning, that when we are finding ourselves in a culture and among a people that have forgotten God, we don't wag a finger; we help them to find him again. And we look within that culture for the seeds of goodness. And then we baptize and celebrate, even their holidays, by giving them new Christian meaning. So, let's re-Christianize Mardi Gras.
Have fun; enjoy your family and friends, and remember, the next day after fact Tuesday is Ash Wednesday. May God bless you and your family in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

I love this! I've always known we're to celebrate and be happy as Catholics, but its so freeing to hear a Catholic priest say that we're to take pleasure in partying... all in the name of the Lord! Eat, drink, and be merry. Fasting time starts soon, and Lent is about to start (which is also a time of celebration, but in a different way of course). Today we celebrate, my Christian family!

I love being Catholic, and our deep seeded roots and tradition. Being Catholic is not easy, but it can be fun anyway.

If you put lipstick on a pig it’s still a pig. Man doesn’t have the authority to “Christianize” anything & nowhere in the Bible., not even in your Catholic Bible. Nowhere in any Bible does God give authority to any pope or person to override his word. Mark 7:6-9 And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.” And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!

This is the beauty, richness, history and culture of Our Faith, and it shouldn't ever be turned into something wild, secular and immoral. I pray that we all turn back to God and back to the way things ought to be.

I am a Catholic Christian too. It is good to celebrate holidays like Mardi Gras but we must be careful because these things have been increasingly secularized by demonic forces. Mardi Gras is NOT supposed to be a time of sin before lent.

Mardi gras is a lot of fun but it's really sad that people just think it's a party with floats and kings cake. Yes kings cake is yummy and and it's fun to make a mask and wear those colorful beads but never forget that it's about the begging of lent .
