Stinging nettle is a natural way to create a neutral palette, and if you're lucky, a green dye for your textile and craft projects. Be very careful when foraging for nettle as the sting is strong - gloves are highly recommended! As with many plants with the potential for green, nettle prefers a lower heat for a longer soak. This tutorial will show you the various ways I brewed for dye, as well as the resulting color swatch samples (cotton, bamboo & silk) with a soy milk & alum mordant and iron shift.

In my experience, greens from nettles come from the early growth in spring and iron after dyeing. Well done on exercising your perseverance!

Thanks so much, Julia! I will try again next year in early spring without the need to freeze 💚 Yes, iron water is the secret sauce to find green for sure. I got some lovely greens from herbs (video here) and will be posting some greens on Friday 😉 Hope you will come back to check them out!

I admire your perseverance. I agree you did get beautiful shades of colour, what if you used ammonia or urine like in the old times?. Leonie

Hmmm...I wrote a long response here, but seems it didn't post - weird. Although I'm curious about the ancient mordant process with urine, I have not tried it 😊 I've used ammonia in a color extraction process with lichen, and I believe it is used with some fungi, but would not consider it a modifier of choice unless there was a great recipe to do so. So many different ways to work with natural color - it is a lifetime of exploration 💚

@@MargaretByrdColorQuest Thank you for your long reply. I've never tried the Urine or the ammonia for that matter. So really can't offer any advice... I was watching a series called the Highlander set in the 1700's very violent at times, but I often watch shows with my husband that I focus on the fabrics or the plants.... all the women in the Croft had to pee into the bucket. They all wore the same dark green nettle dyed clothing. It was just a show. But it stuck in my mind as something I could try in the future. But as we have agreed you did produce beautiful colours with your perseverance. Leonie 💕

I heard once you could use Pacific wax myrtle for natural dye. Have you tried it? Does it work?

I'm not in a position to try this out so what would happen if you added a copper item to the pot of nettles and boiling water?
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
@MargaretByrdColorQuest 2 жыл бұрын
Copper is used as a mordant/modifier in natural dyeing, but I'm cautious about using it for safety reasons. I hope to make copper water soon here on Color Quest which would be safer than heating it. Copper can bring about greens, but so can iron water. Experimentation is the key 😉

how much Alum did you need to bring out a bit of greenness? I'm trying to dye Linen in light green
@MargaretByrdColorQuest
@MargaretByrdColorQuest 2 жыл бұрын
Great question, Sophie 💚 I pretreat my fiber with alum typically using a 15% ratio of alum to W.O.F. (weight of fiber), although I didn't get a very green result with my local nettles, and I'm not convinced it was that connected to the mordant itself. If you want to dye linen a light green, you might try using any plant that gives a yellow dye and shifting it with iron. I find this to be a bit more dependable way to achieve green in many instances. You can see how I shift this way using different herbs in a video here which you can find in my library (July 2021). Iron also acts as a mordant so the colors last longer this way. Best of luck!
