Diferente de Seu Jorge, Marisa Monte, Zé Ramalho ou mesmo Tim Maia, Bethânia apresenta uma miscelânea tão complexa de referencias que uma pessoa de cultura diferente tem muita dificuldade de "traduzir" todos os elementos. Chega a ser engraçado a luta cognitiva pra chegar em Buena Vista Social Club e "cultura indiana" para dar conta do mar de simbologias sonoras e visuais que uma música de uma artista nordestina alicerçada sobre as religiões de matrizes africanas apresenta. To gostando muito dos vídeos desse canal, ajudam a melhorar minha compreensão do inglês e para mim esse vídeo foi muito emblemático sobre a riqueza de Maria Bethânia. Muito bom! I guess, if we could summarise what's special about Maria Bethânia: unique singing style, powerful voice, sings a lot a of poetic songs, strongly related to brazilian culture. I'm no Maria Bethânia expert but that's how i feel about it.

This song has a very special meaning for many people Frank. In a way it is about spreading multicutural values, Caetano did it as a response to Paulo Francis, a journalist who didn't like Caetano at all. In Brazil there is a thing we call complexo de vira-lata, something like the underdog complex, that means we value things from other cultures over our own, and this Paulo Francis was an example of that, the song praises many aspects of Brazilian culture and puts it as equal with some international steples of the time as Andy Warhol and american black culture. The title of the song is a neologism that constrasts with the region Caetano is from, Recôncavo, he uses it to say to Paulo that if you don't knoe your own culture you can't be the opposite of it, "quem não é recôncavo e nem pode ser reconvexo" wich translastes to something like "who isn't recôncavo can't be reconvexo". Caetano gave the song to his sister Maria Bethânia because he thought she was the perfect person to represent what he was thinking when he wrote it.

Frank, Bethânia is a legend alongside with Elis Regina. And, indeed, you grasped her surface: she has roots (religiously and energetically wise to the African gods). On stage and live she is a true force of nature. People that never saw her on stage (and in anyway is connected to her) and go to a concert for the 1st time often freezes speechless when in her presence on the backstage to meet and greet her. She is unusual. His maestro often tells stories - when they are recording a new album - on how everything is set and ready to record upon her arrival but, suddenly, when she steps into the studio every pre-setting they did, any mixing board they adjusted, microphone feedback... for some reason messes up and the fine tuning is blown up. The maestro relates these occurrences to her strong energy. And this particular song was written by her brother (Caetano Veloso) which is a superb composer and a genius himself. This song, by the way, is Caetano’s own definition of Maria Bethânia. It’s how he sees her. So the song is paying homage to herself.

Maria Bethânia is our greatest singer. Not on technical grounds (thats Gal Costa). But the way she put forward in a show all the best poetry in our grand culture. It is Impossible to really enjoy her songs without being inside these many folding worlds. And to absorb most of the lyrics. I'm sometimes sad for my Brazil sad story, but them I remember works like hers (Reconvexo is kind of pop yet, there are some betters around) and others alike.
