At the beginning of Maria Callas' tour in 1959 through Germany, the opera star gave a concert with the NDR Symphony Orchestra (today's NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra) in the sold out Musikhalle Hamburg. Under the direction of Nicola Rescigno, the soprano performed arias by Rossini, Spontini, Bellini and Verdi.

To be in her presence as I was at 16 yrs old in the audience for her farewell tour was similar to this audience reaction but greater if you can imagine. Idolizers in the crowd tossing flowers and screaming like a rock concert. Every hand gesture, every glance was choreographed. Every gesture had a meaning. You know you were part of history and her throat was truly touched by God and given to us for such a short time on earth. Her passion filled you unlike any performance I’ve ever seen.

I was 26 when I saw her in the farewell tour in Miami Beach and I knew then that I would never experience anything to equal it again.......and I was right. I remain a passionate admirer of her and am thankful beyond words that we have her recordings, (commercial and live) along with a few videos. A few years back I visited Paris and went to her home....stood at the gate of the entrance...and allowed myself to simply feel.

@@humbugone1715 I listen every day to a Callas recording. No other singer has or ever will have the pathos that speaks directly to your soul. She had so much love to give and unfortunately she did not get much love personally and was deeply hurt. I’m glad she knew though that her audience adored her and she always strived to give the maximum to us, her loving fans.

I have written this before but will again. If MC had only shown up and not sung a note this concert would still be the legend it is. Her body language and unusually long hands (well, fingers) alone are music in and of themselves, and say it all. That she was in stupendous voice and form is the icing on the cake. How fortunate we are that they captured the event on film for posterity.

Her middle range was unique, nothing like it in all recorded history and highly unlikely there will ever be again such an intense and dramatic sound. That for me is what puts Maria Callas above all other sopranos.

Suliotis, also a Greek soprano, had a remarkably similar voice to Callas, and so had a meteoric rise. She rose too far and too fast unfortunately, also straining and tearing her voice as Callas did.

un concerto che non è fatto di molti vestiti come oggi. uno solo. un concerto fatto di sguardi magnetici, di espressività col corpo col viso, con le mani, come le sà muovere con gusto e raffinatezza. non c'è una volgarità, una cosa fuori posto. gli errori fanno parte della serata e la rendono ancora più preziosa. quanti colori nella voce, quanto gusto nel porgere. Bonjour à toutes et à tous. Quand je travail chez moi ( je fais de la calligraphie ) je me lasse pas et me lasserai jamais d' écouter Maria Callas. Elle me détend et mieux encore, elle est parfois source d' inspiration pour des ornements calligraphiques quand je suis dans le brouillard. Un grand merci à la Diva même si elle nous a quitté.👏

Ich hatte das Glück Maria Callas und Guiseppe di Stefano am 09.11.1973 live in der der Jahrhunderthalle Frankfurt Hoechst zu erleben. Ich traf sie sogar in ihrem Künstlerzimmer und bekam ein Autogramm!

Primadonna Assoluta in einem der wohl besten Konzerte überhaupt! Ihre Klasse ist aus meiner Sicht bis heute unerreicht. Es gibt derer Primadonnen viele, aber es gab nur eine Assoluta. Vor soviel Genie bleibt mir nur die demütige Verneigung.

Can people feel how effortlessly she projects her voice ? Callas had an amazing control of a voice that cumulates Beauty , Power and flexibility . When she sang low notes like in "Tu Che le vanita " one can hear some stifled cough in the public ...But these passive aggressive attacks are less than what she used to face. The German audience had some control. It's so amazing to see a human being wield that amount of emotional power. The members of the orchestra were leaving and acknowledging the reality of why Voice is the First instrument. Thanks for sharing this gem !

Posseggo questo concerto da quando è uscito in videocassetta La Callas stava male ed è insicura lancia occhiate al maestro per chiedere sostegno e scusa per il fiato che manca Non è contenta di sé stessa ma noi lo siamo moltissimo Questo concerto ha più suspense di un film di Hitchcock Che metavigliosa artista!!!

Is this the first video known of Callas singing live? On the purely dramatical side, I am forcefully struck by her ‘grandezza’ of manner. Such nobility and elevation, both in the singing and her affect in recognizing the audience. This is true art; singers joking around from the stage in concerts is not. We have been overtaken by such vulgarity in the theater.

Listened once again to the MACBETH aria, “Vieni, t’affretta”. Callas was sick with a cold for this concert. Yes, the ascents up to high C in the cadenzas (the first is missed with an apologetic wave of her hand, and the second in tenuous, the interpolated high C at the end of the PIRATA scene is not attempted; she would return to finest form in Amsterdam) are far from her best. Watching closely her interactions with Rescigno, Callas only seems to be approaching pleased with her efforts after the Rossini. Nevertheless, every other sound and instinct in this aria is amazingly on point and, to my ear, beautifully married to the music and the character. Power and beauty in the 1950s, even when ill. Listening to any other artist in this material and then returning to this performance, I am confirmed.

I thought shaky-cam was something new and cool, and then we have the cameraman doing the shaky recording already in the 50'ties?

At minute 1.12 a disturbing thing happens: Maria directs a quick, very perplexed look towards the conductor, and shakes her head "no", as if to say "No, it didn't go well". She clearly sees, if only for a moment, that she is dissatisfied. And then she sighs, and she bows her head to the applause, but in a sad way. Who knows what didn't work...
