In their defense, the backup singers may actually be singing the correct notes. It actually may be more of an issue of intonation-or the way each singer sings the vowels (in this case "oooh"). Everyone pronounces and sings words differently. In a small group, different pronunciations or accents can make the same note stick out like a sore thumb. When this group is singing, it sounds as if the person singing the middle harmony (singing the "A" in the E flat chord) might have approached the sound of the word differently than the other singers. But what's tricky is that as they all sing the different chords (or harmonies), the vocalist singing the top note sticks out. So again. You can have 3 people singing the correct notes but if they are pronouncing the word differently, it can make the notes sound off (even if they are not). More reason as to why being a professional background vocalist can be harder than people think. To have the focus to be pitch AND word/tone perfect while other singers are singing different notes in your ear, while the band is blasting behind you, while trying to hear yourself in a venue that's loud AF, while trying not to be distracted by the fan who just threw their underwear on stage, while also facing the nerves of singing for a famous singer... yeah. It's a lot! 😳😱🤣🤣 Shout out to all the background vocalists out there!

Lucky it wasn't a background singer for some rock or country singers. They have been known to stop songs and fire them off the stage, or in extreme cases go after them with fists.

I hear it too about the wrong note 🎵on the first clip. it’s cool that ahe noticed it :)) too. It was just 1 girl singing it a bit flat and normal than the others not giving it all and not singing it correctly.

Me thinks Mariah might have been a bit pitchy herself and just turned and dumped it onto the shoulders of a backup singer. At any rate, you don't ever do that live in front of an audience. Odds are they didn't hear it anyway and all you do is draw attention to the mistake. Very unprofessional.

It's not just about the audience noticing a wrong note. Everyone has to sing and play correct for the group. It is awful if someone sings or plays wrong. It ruins the performance. Nothing destroys good singing. Good singing is good singing.
