"I was performing 'emotions' on top of the pops in about 1991. David Bowie was on the program too with his band. And he sat there watching me during rehearsals. I remember feeling a little intimidated, but I wanted to impress him as I sing live. We rehearsed over over again until I was almost hoarse. But really I was sort of performing just for him. And at the end, he came up to me and told me he liked the song and my performance. That was kind of him and it meant a lot to me." - Mariah Carey

Actually it's more than an octave. The studio version is up an octave in A minor. This version is an octave lower and also it's in G# minor

I can tell she doesn't have access of her upper register, sounds like tired or inflammed vocal folds. Anyway, her luscious warm buttery tone makes it all up for her singing this in a much lower key.
