this was both the happiest and saddest era as a lamb. she was treating us left and right, it was the first time I think she took to heart everything lambs were saying during the mid 2010s and it felt like she was doing everything she could for us. she started writing the book, started performing very highly requested fan favorites she hadn't performed in decades (or ever) and was such a delight to watch on stage. she was so intentional with the way she used her voice and it seemed like she was really trying to deliver, which was so nice to see in contrast with the carelessness that we saw in 2016-2017 (her voice was in much better shape back then but it seemed like she didn't care about using it correctly so a lot of her attempts were straight up yelling notes out). sadly her voice was shot and so incredibly unreliable, usually her voice got better as her tour went on (true for the residencies and all the tours pre caution) but with caution and the 2020 butterfly returns leg, her voice started out great and then became tired by the third show.

Fully agreed. Best way forward for her would be to lower all her songs, strip them down and change the arrangements, and experiment with what she has now. It would be creative and fun for her. But it would also be a very public acknowledgement that she can't do what she once did, which seems to be very difficult for her, even though she can do all kinds of amazing things NOW. Aretha and Whitney adjusted their songs to their changed voices and nothing got lost in the process.

@@CalebTizon Aretha and Whitney's voices were in much better shape. Whitney's vocals on her last tour eat up Mariah from 2019 onwards. We know that it would be cool to hear Mariah adapt but she's not that kind of a person. If she were, she would have done it long time ago. Remember that she's claimed to warming up by humming to the radio. She needs vocal coaching big time and she's actually been in a need of one for a decade. That would have stopped her technical flaws and helped her to regain some of her range. Lara Fabian and Celine know something about it.

@VMariah
@VMariah Ай бұрын
I agree, it would be hard cause a lot of her audience rn in places like Vegas don't really know or care if she's lipping, and they're mostly just there to see her and hear the music. But I think as long as she keeps creating and promoting new music, new eras there's a possibility of that happening one day
@outsideskippy1997
@outsideskippy1997 Ай бұрын
@@VMariah Yeah her preference for lipping is interesting considering so many artists use live autotune. But then again when belting range is the issue, autotune won’t really help. I still feel like she needs to take a step back and think about the journey of her voice- the abuse it’s been through and why it’s changed. I literally feel like she avoids vocal training because of 2 reasons: the first being her trauma with Tommy, and the second being that it reminds her about how much worse her voice has gotten and all the baggage that comes with people doubting her live singing skills. Figuring out why she doesn’t like to lower keys is difficult, but perhaps lowering keys reminds her of declining voice (and maybe Whitney idk).
@outsideskippy1997
@outsideskippy1997 Ай бұрын
@@VMariah wow I am really just ranting today. I just wanted to add that like her raising the key to vol felt like “I still can do that” (in the studio) almost as a way to prove to herself why her voice hasn’t declined that much or changed that much
@VMariah
@VMariah Ай бұрын
@@outsideskippy1997 yeah and I think she didn't feel satisfied with the idea of fully lipping VOL in -2 key, so she wanted to arrange it to be so difficult and impossible that it somehow better justifies her lipping, if that makes sense
@outsideskippy1997
@outsideskippy1997 Ай бұрын
@@VMariah that’s interesting considering a lot of the other songs are easier😭. Cause like I guess for hero she’s too used to the -1 key and it’s been that way forever, so it doesn’t make sense to raise it. I guess she likes forcing herself to lip 💀
@outsideskippy1997
@outsideskippy1997 Ай бұрын
The fact that by the end of 2020 she was accepting that her voice might never fully recover is definitely an interesting possibility. Now it wasn’t overuse but her actual technique that was the issue. I really wish that she took the opportunity to actually rehabilitate her voice- but I feel like at that point she kind of accepted her fate as a “studio singer” for lack of better word. Recording for her Christmas special in 2020 is probably what sealed the deal. She was excited to push her voice (re-recording all of those difficult songs is pretty crazy) but those mid-upper belts sounded borderline painful. This vocal damage is probably what led to another stage of “maturing” in her chords. Also the use of autotune was minimal on Caution- but by 2021 WBT remix it was off the charts. Her insecurities about her voice definitely bloomed in 2020

@CalebTizon
@CalebTizon Ай бұрын
I remember thinking 2018 was better than 2017 at the time, maybe because the tone was better and she had more energy. But the belting definitely suffered. Her belting in VOL 2017 was on FIRE every night, but then she struggled to hold and resonate those Bb4s from 2018 on. I know she allegedly had a gastric bypass surgery during that time, so maybe that affected things. But the biggest drop was 2020 to 2022 to me. The clips of her singing at home were amazing, she was saying her voice was in great shape...then she hit the stage in 2022 and had about half of what she had in 2019. It's so strange, and makes me wonder if all the time off made things worse somehow. Like she completely forgot her technique after not being on stage for almost 3 years. Idk, I'll never stop being fascinated by her temperamental voice and her odd ways of handling the situation.

I imagine it could have been due to the supposed bariatric surgery, because it affects the diaphragm muscles, making them weaker. But 2020 onwards, in addition to not doing vocal exercises and warm ups, she wasn't performing, so her voice wasn't being trained in any way.

@@SPexHoS2137 yeah I've gone back and forth about whether she had a vocal coach for Charmbracelet. I feel like if she did have a coach it would've been a faster more drastic shift- and things like vibrato and stuff would be more present. Her technical intuition was pretty good for belting until like 2006- for charm she was running on muscle memory. I feel like unfortunately Charm tour is one of the main reasons that Mariah believes she can take care of her voice by herself- by resting, sleeping, but only minimal warm ups.

I love how you point out that it seems a song isn't "complete" to Mariah unless part is lipped. Like doing Endless Love all live but lipping like 3 words at the very end. I feel that she started changing her technique during 2018 due to the backlash of her natural 2017 tone (Dark and heavy), so she tried to pull a daydream move and make her voice sound more girly and nasal, however this backfired since that only made her upper belt inconcistent, easily tired and pitch issues (similar issues daydreamriah had) It only got worse in 2020-2022 since her voice was basically overpitched. It wasn't until 2023 that (I think due to menopause) she had to accept her new heavier and dark sound

I've never heard this explanation before but it makes a lot of sense! I remember thinking some note changes in that era were also strangely reminiscent of Daydream. Maybe she was trying to move back toward that style

I don’t really follow news and stuff, but when she did get public backlash for her dark heavy tone? I feel like 2017 was about the body and being a diva, etc. Now on the other hand I could imagine that Mariah internalized some insecurities about her changing voice and aging and that led her to sing differently. But with how much her tone has changed over the years I honestly think she doesn’t really do a lot of intentional things with her voice. She discovered she liked a higher placement around 1994- probably in the studio and then kept going cause it felt good to her. Butterfly was unable to replicate it, so she just rolled with darker tones. But then again 2017-2018 does feel so drastic that it had to be something intentional? Like with unintentional changes it happens gradually idk. Sorry for this long rant
@CalebTizon
@CalebTizon Ай бұрын
@@outsideskippy1997I'm not sure how public the backlash was, but most lambs were commenting that they were NOT digging her tone during that time. It was similar to 2015 - heavy, dark, and oddly unpleasant for some reason. I love darker rounder voices, but it was weird for Mariah to not sound "pretty" like she always has. The higher placement was surely intentional, just like how it was in 95/95 - that's also how she sings in the studio, never really using her natural tone, which indicates that's generally how she prefers to sound. So I'm not sure why she WASN'T doing that in 2015/2017 - maybe she was just trying something different and decided it didn't fit her idea of herself as a singer. Sorry for my rant as well. 😅
@devenstout
@devenstout Ай бұрын
@@outsideskippy1997Mariah always liked a higher placement in the voice. Have you heard weakness of the body from her demo? Tommy made her sing lower, and Tommy forced her to see a vocal coach during their marriage, when she was trapped in the mansion better known as “sing sing”. I think Tommy realized if Mariah recorded her songs in higher placements of her voice it would eventually backfire which is why a lot of her earlier songs have a darker heavier tone, and Mariah didn’t like singing like that, she even said she prefers singing her songs in a higher key because they sound better even if she can’t replicate it on stage. Mariah smoked during the years leading up to her debut, so 90 91 and 92 her voice was recovering from smoking, and with cigarettes being so hard to quite, I’m sure she would sneak one here and there, but it wasn’t until she was living with Tommy with constant supervision that she quit smoking entirely in my opinion. That combined with a vocal coach is the clear polished sound we hear from 1993 to 1996. Mariah also says the state of her voice depends on how much sleep she gets and I remember seeing an interview from 1995 where she said she tries to get 12 hours of sleep the day before a performance. After her divorce, I wouldn’t doubt it if she started smoking again rarely, I kno she started partying and drinking more and was around people that were smoking. But she definitely always preferred singing outside of her natural range which is why her voice was so inconsistent, aside from the nodules. I’ll also point out that throughout the years, the more singing she did, the raspier her speaking voice was, her voice hasn’t been raspy for almost a decade, I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing
@outsideskippy1997
@outsideskippy1997 Ай бұрын
@@devenstout I agree that she likes singing in a higher placement in general- like TEOM is much more nasal and high than most people think. But I'm not sure that Tommy intentionally wanted to have a darker sound- I think it was more about training her voice to be good with adult contemporary ballads. I also a agree that she had a vocal coach, but I believe she stopped by 1994. I never thhought about smoking- I mostly considered drinking to be her problem, but smoking is also interesting to consider.

i appreciate you pointing out the fact that when she _is_ actually singing live, she doesn't end up using auto-tune/live pitch correction. in an era where nearly everybody is, it's refreshing to hear the notes as they really are, even if her delivery on some notes ends up being flat or sharp. when we arrived at pandemic era, it pained me seeing her lip VOL for the first time ngl, and i hope someday we see her return to more live singing again - even if she has to re-arrange her songs and continue to lower keys. imo nothing beats her real, live, un-melodyned, unedited, vocal moments

Ok, so if i'm being fully honest i kinda feel some type of way about what you said about the quarantine performances. it felt like you're doubting her completely and think any good note is either lipped or dubbed. But if i'm being honest with myself, if i look objectively and take as step back, i can kinda see where you're coming from. doesn't mean i agree (i think the vol whistle is live) but it does mean i'm leaving the door open tot he possibility that you may be right about some of it. as far as the lipping of the last performance and even the speech...1 month ago i would have unsubscribed and cursed your name for even making the insinuation (lol), but it was just a few weeks ago when i realized she's lipping the spoken song introductions and speeches in Celebration of Mimi. I was floored. I literally couldnt believe it. I even compared multiple dates and she was 100% lip syncing the spoken speeches in Celebration of Mimi. So whether or not i agree with your assessment here is irrelevant because the real takeaway is plausibility and it's 100% plausible that she did lip the speech in the last quarantine performance. Excellent video once again.
