If anyone has recommendations for what we could add to that wall, let us know. PS: I will not allow myself to post another video until we figure out how to install a heater, and I have no idea how long that's going to take. So, we'll se you when we see you. Until then I hope you're staying warmer than us. lol.

I'm building out a box truck myself. I plan on using the space behind the passenger seat as a small storage shelf. A good place for the heater is under the sink or next to where you will keep your fresh water supply, I think putting it behind the forward seats would work but be wary of damaging the ventilation hose to the box.

Pro tip: put a security camera on the top of that roll up door. Just to be sure there's no one on the other side when you open it up. Can't be too careful!

Hey just for your safety: make sure, that you secure your floor mats (the ones for your feet where your driving). It can be dangerous, if they slide under the brake and prevent you from braking, there have been accidents and deaths with a toyota series a few years ago from that. Otherwise keep your videos up, great work and really authentic :)

Insulation, insulate every inch of the cabin, and the floor. The roll-up back door leaks cold air into the cabin even when closed. So you will need to design how you want the rear opening. A roof vent is a great addition after deciding how you would like to lay down your solar panels. A wood stove fireplace would be great for heat and ambiance in addition to a diesel heater. Installing a diesel heater at the mid-section of the cabin will allow the heat to warm up the cabin faster and more evenly. I'm looking forward to see you live happily in your new home!

Hi Mariah The first thing you need is insulation. For me, that is at least on a par with a heater for necessity. Particularly this time of year. Insulation to floor, walls and roof ASAP as, even with a heater - heat will just disappear into the wilderness, without anything to keep it in. Nate Murphy is a great source of information and help. I’m sure you’ve had his channel screen shot on one of your videos?? Above all else though ……. If you don’t have a plan or a timescale to aim for - make one!!! Hope this is a repeat of others comments- it should be. Wishing you well and congratulations on all you’re achieving 😊
@kefler187
@kefler187 Жыл бұрын
I was going to suggest insolation but figured someone in the comments would have already suggested it. The only issue is, how does she go about it. i mean, yeah you could have 4 - 6 inches of insulation on every surface but then that would eat away at her living space. I think 1 - 1.5" insulation foam panels would probably work, as that would only eat up 2-3" total side to side, top to bottom, also has the added benefit of being fairly easy to install in a box truck.

Suggestion, a small shelf above the seats and door frame to house small viney plants or herbs that will dangle eventually towards the sunlight. of course place something along the shelf lege to prevent plants from falling during travel. Just as a heads up, paint and spray adhesive tend to outgass CO2 and other fumes as they dry. If you overdo it in an enclosed space and then sleep in it, you can poison yourself. Have a max that you feel safe doing each day and maybe get an 02 monitor off amazon. Osha requires it in a lot of paint shops that have autoclaves.

Your creative mind and style is intriguing. It interesting how little things can effect people. I would never have thought of pulling up the carpet, painting the back header or hanging strands of wheat next to the pass-through like you did. I remember how my now deceased wife would love to not only fix a meal, but present it with ringed cloth napkins, placemats and served in matching china bowls and plates. Makes me realize even more, how much I need a woman’s touch to decorate my less than awe-inspiring van.

I have built storage for multiple vehicles for my electrical business and I have always ended up posted at my local Home Depot and built them there. I also have spent a lot of time wandering the aisles looking at the materials there and brainstorming ideas for builds. I'm doing a basic conversion to an old shuttle bus. My goal is to build simply to make it easy to move to another shuttle bus if need be. The box truck is a great platform because it is so easy to move to another box truck if something major happens to yours. Lastly a security tip for you, if there is a hole in the track of the roll up door somewhere, putting a metal stick or something strong will help prevent the door from rolling up. Hopefully that helps! Stay warm!

I love how you're doing this project. I feel like every van built etc I've seen they just have the van sitting in a driveway and they're building like mad on a time crunch waiting for the adventure to begin. You're living the adventure while doing the built. And while you're at it proving it doesn't really take anything fancy to live out of a vehicle. A place to sleep, a cooler, some power and a cooktop. That's how I've been doing little roadtrips in my minivan, of course that's different to fully living in a vehicle, but it works while you're getting to the good stuff.

I have a van that I started last year. Had to stow it during last winter but I haven't worked on it since and I am now sure it's mostly been a really bad case of analysis paralysis. I have the tools, garage, and experience to build (not as much time since I have a FT job), but for some reason I have been DREADING beginning the work again. This video has been inspiring and relatable in many ways. Seeing you make such wonderful progress even though you don't always know what you're doing has been eye-opening. And let's be real here - you may not always know something, but your determination seems to always win. You figure it out and continuously add new skills to your tool belt. I'm not sure what changed when and why uncertainty is scary to me all of the sudden. I'm going to restart building this week. Thank you for your videos, you're awesome! You're making a literal difference, metaphorically. 😉

Cab area is much brighter, carpet included. ||| I recommend an vented to the outside heater, connected to a good-sized propane tank, placed outside. (Should always be vented to the outside utilizing an approved method). The negative drawback to those forced air heaters is the 12V D.C. current draw, for the blower motor operation of this heating arrangement. Need long lasting batteries. (Positive part: heat quickly and safely). The emphasis is on safety. (Some of the benefits and cost of RV appliances is in safety shut-down features. (Which can increase operator frustration). It is a choice that takes weighing risks to benefit. (My very opinionated suggestion). 😊

I recommend the Wabasto gasoline heater. It draws (efficiently sips) right from your fuel tank. It was a little pricey, but I had mine professionally installed in case I had any warranty issues.

I’m adoring following your slow build! I’ve been thinking Stepvan for years (hope to begin within the next year) but you are opening my eyes to the possibilities of a box truck with the pass thru cut in. Love that idea. Great stealth potential. Good luck Mariah, this older trans lady is rooting for you!

New subscriber. I have extreme jealousy to anyone who travels the U.S. and converts a van or "box truck" to living quarters. Look forward to following your builds and your amazing journey ahead.

You could paint a little mural. You could put a small piece of tapestry up there, or a small quilted piece of artwork. When I first saw you bought this truck, I saw you building a staircase going up to your bed area. Under the stairs were drawers for your clothing and things - or it could be your kitchen area, with kitchen drawers and kitchen shelving. Or, your video creating area. I like the paint color you chose to paint the cab, and I like the color of the carpet, looks very attractive.

Thanks for sharing you journey ❤! I’ve learned a lot from you about realistically traveling in a vehicle. I look forward to watching and learning more from you. I’m about to start my own travel journey and I’m excited to gain new experiences and learn more (especially about myself). 🤪😊

As a quick way to test roof insulation, get 4 foam boards an inch thick and some bailing wire. Drill holes in the aluminum lip that runs down both sidewalls along the roof line. String the bailing wire, fit in the foam boards and reel it in until it is snug in place. It won’t be perfect, but it will be a lot, lot better. If you don’t feel the difference take the boards back, if you do figure out how you want to keep them in long term.

At those moments when things get hard don't focus on the entire forest only the tree you are chopping at the moment. Celebrate when you complete each phase and milestone as a completed project. This helps me when I do big projects.

The slow progress on my projects is 50% procrastination and 50% FOFU - Fear of F,,king Up. Watching someone else do stuff helps alleviate both. Thank-you.

Look at you all hands on deck so cool, once Steve is all dolled up it's going to be so satisfying. Keep up the great work and careful with the fumes we don't want you all high around power tools. Stay free.

I was going to ask about sound in the cab since you didn't put any sound proofing under the carpet, but then I remember you have that big empty box making noise right now. Sometimes our brains go crazy places. Anyway, I've seen other builds where they put the heater in the cab and they all seemed pretty happy with that choice. I wish I were making the same journey. Thank you so much for sharing yours.

Crafty!!! Another masterpiece solo film making adventure journey in the chapters of this novel and lovely progress on "Steve." I was totally thinking of your ventilation when you were painting or stripping old floor boards, and that adhesive. N-95 masks and open ventilation please! You always get great nature shots and sometimes I can't tell who is enjoying it more, you or Finn and vicariously us.
