I heard that when you are singing MC like I do sometimes, the ascendance of the voice comes from sound bouncing off from where a Singer is singing. I hit some high notes last night and I had that experience. Plus, " I will be there" which MJ authorized that she use was what made her. In terms of her being the greatest, Whitney Houston is also the greatest. I saw MC on a show drinking what she said was vodka. Like Whitney RIP I think she has addiction issues, I hope she is getting the help she needs. There are many recovery programs.

Mariah's voice stood above them all in the 90's and she brilliantly could blend in with hip hop which was unheard of because she was such a strong vocalist. She was even more potent in the 2000's with fire hip hop features and ballads. She did it with class, flare and a Empress swag. Her music was diverse... From soul sounds, rnb, club ballads, inspirational tracks, pop hits...Mariah is a force to be reckon with...Period.

This is insane, I never listened to Mariah much. BUT after watching this so many artist owe her so much. I'm seeing christina aguilera, Britney spears, gwen stefani (solo version), rihanna, nicki minaj and ariana grande in this video and none of them were even around it. Mariah's voice sounds just as sweet in 2024 as she did in the early 1990s, it is simple as that. And P Diddy also made an enormous impact on the whole musical genre over the years. Remixes were how Mariah wanted the songs to be. Originals were how the label wanted them to be. In Mairah's case, the remix is the original song.

Mariah just got more and more beautiful through the 90s. She produced one great album after another most with songs written by her. This was the first hit from her Butterfly CD. Way back in 1997. Oh the 90s what a decade for music and movies.

You have to remember by the time this video is released Mariah was like the Beyonce of today! Even more than Taylor Swift of todays! She is the first mainstream superstar to release hip-pop track as a regular single so when this was released the media went wild! This video premiered on MTV and BET almost at the same time! People were shocked because in 1995 she's all covered up and now she's hanging with rappers etc! Also in 1997 her music was the regular people music too, heavy rotation on radio and on tv!

Mariah surrounded by Blk men in these videos was Tommy Mottolas greatest nightmare but she was clearly home where she belonged!! Mariah did what Whitney failed to do: break away from the box she was placed in by Clive Davis while her voice was at it's peak. In her rebellion she married Bobby but it hurt her career as her music remained typecast in the adult contemporary lane. I still don't think the world got to see Whitney's real soulful essence like we got from Mariah when she switched musical lanes & came home!!!! Only God knows!!!

Great comment. A notable point here is that Whitney tried to do something Black a decade into her career, but she was failing terribly there. Exhale debuted at #1 due to the movie and chart manipulation but remained under Mariah's One Sweet Day for 11 weeks. That's what hurt Whitney...and to cover all those flops she had to stick to what Davis told her. Mariah truly carved masterpieces with her Black singles though. Because she was never a bland formulaic artist like Whitney. This woman wrote and produced her music, a rarity in those times.

Whitney debuted almost a decade before Mariah. Adult contemporary *was* the style back then. And My Love Is Your Love was still very successful (and soulful).

@@ktw70 I won't call MLIYL exactly successful, specifically in Whitney's home country USA where it matters the most. MLIYL debuted and peaked at #13 on Billboard 200 and then free fell out of the charts within 57 weeks. That's not what we can call a successful album

While Mariah wasn't the first to use rap in her songs to elevate them she showed the true nature of how high you could take them. For those of you not old enough These songs were EVERYWHERE in the 90s. She showed her audience that they could like R&B and Hip-Hop. Breakdown with Krayzie is still one of the greatest collabs of all time Harmony wise. Going down memory lane just reminds me how on top of the world Puff Daddy was at the height of his game. And since Bigs/Pac/L all died there was no one left to challenge him for a while. Took the rise of Jay-Z to knock bad boy off that crown and even that took a long while. (not talking deep rap more as sales and being everywhere)

I never liked this song back then. I just liked how she looked in the original video. It's strange that I really like it now after all these years. It even has an almost current, today's sound to it. Genius! Mariah Carey was WAY ahead of her time.

It's INSANE how much this woman contributed not just to the R&B world, but to pop and the whole formula itself. These videos, songs she's written... she's laid the foundation for all the artists today. I wish I were born earlier so I could've experienced the UTTER SLAYAGE of this era. INSANE!
