Marian Anderson married an American architect named Orpheus (!) Fisher. I think tedly10027 is confusing her with Anne Brown, the original Bess in the Gershwin opera. It was based on the play "Porgy" and she so impressed Gershwin he added "and Bess" to the title. She married a Norwegian ski champion and lived in Norway from 1948 until she died in 2009 aged 96. Her 1979 memoir has yet to be translated into English.

@Greatheil Marian could sing a high C with no problems even after her 50s as she was in this vid. None of her notes were "wasted".

@keenansblue i think you are talking about Heav'n Heav'n. This is the only song I can think of that has "heaven" reverberated through the nose

in her return- she was refused entrance to sing in the Congrass Hall of the USA because the "Wives of Congress" , very powerful whitewomen, did not allow it. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was chairwoman - and in protest - she resigned and left the organization and arranged the world-famous Open Air Concert televised globally in front of the Lincoln Memorial to show the world and USA what a TREASURE they had in Marian Anderson.

i loved Anderson since i was a kid too. the sadness of her story is: as one of the greatest American voices..she did not enjoy having a great career in the USA in her PRIME years..because of racism..many places were "closed" to her from performing. so she went to europe, russia, scandinavia and others where she was highly celebrated and married a norwegian where they considered her a national treasure..she sang again in the USA when her voice was past her prime..so the USA LOST a chance .

Can someone please tell me where I can find the rest of this performance? She sang a song *I don't know the name* and when she sang "heaven" she made the sound come like a hum from her nose. I want to hear it again but I cannot find it :(
