The fact that some people hate Mariano for apparently no reason it's because animated movies have trained us to believe that a handsome, strong, male love interest is always an evil, dumb, self absorbed narcissist (Gaston, Hans, Prince Charming from Shrek...). So people are just too familiarized with this stereotype, wich is not true at all. Mariano is just romantic, sensible and naive, and I really like how this movie broke the stereotype: handsome man = evil. One thing I would love to see in a Disney movie is a toxic relationship in wich the female love interest is the toxic one. Because movies always tend to depict men as the toxic ones, and this is not always the case. Girlfriends can be just as selfish, greedy, treacherous and manipulative as boyfriends (my ex girlfriend was an example of that)

Mariano is just a cool guy who probably has the same issues as Isa, got raised to be the perfect son, and the perfect future husband, nobody listen to him. Overprotective mom, who decide everything. With Dolores being sort of confident, knowing all his weakness, his passions, he suddenly felt listened. Him asking to marry Dolores was just the familly pressure still being here and show up. Encanto was quite realistic on the psychologic side.

Honestly, I feel like Mariano was also just planning to marry Isabela to make his mom happy. He was so confused when Mirabel was singing to him about marrying her sister, and he was very hesitant to propose to Isabela. Being a mama's boy, i think he just followed whatever his mom said. I like that Isabela didn't really dislike Mariano, she just didn't see him as a potential partner. I bet they'd be great friends and she'd tell him more about Dolores.

On the "all of you" song it looks like he knew then Isabela wasn't interested so he backed down and didn't seek out the two matriachs for help to get Isa back. Some say that on the book he sends Isa sweets and flowers (apparently) and courts Isa properly. I think proper courting was a plus on him, it's just Isabela wasn't interested at all and couldn't do anything about it but to accept because of abuela.

Mariano actually has a very witty and charming personality in the official Encanto novelization! There's this moment during the dinner where, quote: " "Mirabel," Mariano called out. Mirabel sat up fast and bonked her head on the table. "Any more cracks? Or do you only see 'em when you're trying to get me off the dance floor?" he said jokingly. He chuckled in this light, charming way,- " end quote. I really hope we get to see this in the Encanto series on Disney+.

When i saw Mariano in the dinner scene i just thought he was actually very pure and in love, and he wanted to do everything right, not rushing it since it was a very special day for him. The only "negative" thing i see in this character is that he falls in love too quickly haha

Mariano is a sweet guy actually. Yes he's clumsy almost every time but that doesn't matter 😊

I mean, considering context, Mariano is a decent guy and completely normal for his age. For the decent guy part, I'm going off of Dolores's judgement. She's been able to listen in on everything he's ever done for the last 17 years, and she thinks he's a sweet guy who will take care of her and probably be pretty romantic. She's definitely heard the good, the bad, and the ugly, and she still likes him. And as for normal for his age, historical context (this is set in the 1950s) paired with anecdotal evidence from people his age that I've met (22), he's pretty average with his wants. In the 50s, the average marrying age was 20-23 years old, compare that to now at around 32. So he's right at the age where everyone his age is getting married. I've met a lot of people right around that age that are determined that if they don't find their true love before they're 24, they'll be alone forever. Yes he's fine with going from one girl to another, and continuing his marriage proposal, but I'm pretty certain it's the combination of society, youth, and being in love with the idea of love that causes this. And as other comments have mentioned, he demonstrates through his actions that he's a good guy. Even after Isabella hitting him in the nose and possibly breaking it, twice, he's still right in the front of the townsfolk on their way to help her and her family. He came to his proposal prepared to offer something that might prove him worthy (as cringey as a song might have been). He was thrown off by how everyone reacted, but he didn't let it scare him off. Legitimately the only thing you could be mad at him for is being okay going from Isabella to Dolores, but limited research tells me that even with the entire town helping, even though it isn't completely destroyed, it probably took at least 3 months to rebuild Casita, if not more. There's a solid chance that Isabella officially rejected him in that time period, and he was just dealing with the heartbreak when Dolores came along. So even if he only had a month or two between girls, that's not even that bad. Especially when the "relationship" was an arranged marriage. While I get that everyone is gonna have their feelings about him, and that Disney has primed us to assume he's an evil character, I really hope he becomes one of the guys that fell in love with the family Madrigal, and then becomes part of the family Madrigal. He seems genuinely nice and he makes Dolores happy. (Also tangent topic: I'm pretty confident that the 5 babies thing was something Dolores made up to mess with Isabella, I mean just look at the smirk she has immediately after saying that)
