Part of our French history/Lady Gaga collection. The much-maligned queen gets a sympathetic treatment with harpsichord accompaniment. (original remake of the instrumental)
LYRICS
Only fourteen, sent from Austria
Destined to be queen
When I married Louis, the Dauphin of France
Wonder if I’d stand a chance
Blonde and pretty, but no intimacy
Inability to do my duty - to produce an heir
Ridicule, I’ve had my share
And you know the rumors fly
“Madame Deficit!” “She’s such a cruel spendthrift!”
They don’t know me
I am just Marie
“Look at the Dauphine, she’s such a silly teen”
“She’s gambling all the Treasury!”
Is pleasure such a crime?
The finer things in life were always mine
Decadent, it’s true, but in my heart I’m blue
It fills me, this empty Marie
Shunned the nobility, all that ceremony
Built my rustic retreat at Petit Trianon
Just my friends and me
Losing popularity
Where did we go so wrong?
Louis wasn’t strong
Helping the colonies
And then our country suffered tragedy
Starvation and poverty
And I lost my baby, why?
In ’89 they stormed into Versailles and made me face them
On the balcony
End of monarchy, taken to Tuileries
To the border we would try to flee
Caught in the Varennes Flight
Discovered that my hair was shocked to white
Conciergerie, Prisoner 280
I’m only Citizen Marie
Louis tried, condemned
I knew this was the end
The Terror
Everyone against me
My son testified
They forced him to say lies
Found guilty for depravity
To mothers I do plea
How much can you take away from me?
So to the guillotine I’ll ride with dignity
I’m your Queen
I am still Marie

She's such an innocent girl who was luckily born into a royal family, then unluckily sent to France. You'd think the Austrians would have came and rescued her but they didn't care. Poor girl.

She did try to flee to Austria. Austria did try to wage war to stop the Revolutionists, but it came to no avail. Austria was having it's own problems. Unfortunately Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were so accustomed to their culture, they didn't think about how they traveled. They "disguised" but were still possibly carrying royal china, silks, blankets, wigs, shoes, all the signs of nobility. They really ignored how the peasant folk lived and looked. Hence, this was the primary fault of their downfall, a disconnect from their own people. Yes, I don't believe she did anything on purpose. She was a victim of her own class system. I don't think she ever saw a peasant up close until they were knocking down her bedroom door.

Masticatious most likely they just didn't went to the streets and gave a tramp a piece of bread. The tramps were invited and since being around a princess was wearing their finest. Which is why Marie Antoinette concept of the poor was similar to our ideas of middle class. The home she created to look like a poor person home look like a modern bed and breakfast. She had no idea what it was like to be poor and her idea as fun is to stay in her little palace that Louis built to her and pretend that her friends and her were 'commoners'.

***** I did listen to the song, and like Benvolio Mozart up there I was a little taken back that the creators chose to rob Antoinette of her autonomy. That is, they portrayed Antoinette as a sheep led to the slaughter rather than a political actor in her own right. As the song points out, Marie-Antoinette was accused of molesting her son; she was acquitted of this charge. The song neglects to point out that she was also accused of presenting French battle plans to Austrian invaders; she was convicted of this charge; we know she was absolutely guilty of this charge. Had her plans been successful, French blood would have been spilled. This is treason, whether or not we're going to apply the terroristic legislation of the Law of Suspects. Marie-Antoinette was not sitting on her hands and lamenting 'ho-hum' as a crowd marched to decapitate her family - she was willing to kill to defend what she believed was right. Had she acted otherwise she would not be a figure worthy of respect! What kind of mother would allow her children to be disinherited? I for one disagree with her politics, I bemoan absolute monarchy, and I have more sympathy for the soldiers she betrayed than for her or her parasitic family. But gosh darnit if I'm going to deny that the woman was a fighter. If you want to admire her, by all means! There's much to admire! But admire her as a feisty, dignified human being who went down fighting, not as a meek lamb led to slaughter.

When poor Antonia moved to France she had to give up everything in her life from her name to her ability to see her family, she was only 14, sent off to marry someone someone she had never met and forced to follow the ediquitte. She didn't even speak much French. People gosdiped about her and her affectionless husband failed to do his duty because he didn't understand. It's no wonder that poor Antonia turned to gambling.

kamipapillon1 Why is she joking? Marie Antoinette did not do anything wrong. She was the consort of King Louis and had nothing to do with policy or the decisions made by the government of France, so even if the mob in charge of the Reign of Terror believed the government had committed grave injustices against the people it had nothing to do with her. They accused her of incest with her young son. She was killed solely to please the bloodlust of the mob, who wanted her killed because of what she stood for, wealth and privilege. A truly horrific period in human history and one of the most unjustly maligned of all historic figures.
@kamipapillon1

cricketrecords This Marie-Antoinette mania in countries who regularly indulge in French bashing is amusing. Ever heard of "l'affaire du collier de la Reine", for example? Of course some of the accusations against her were clearly unfounded, but she was no saint. She was who insisted they all flee when the King had given his word they wouldn't, so she was also responsible for what happened then. Find me a Revolution that was no bloodshed anyway. Don't starve your people while you're wallowing in wealth is what they should have understood before it was too late.
@cricketrecords
@cricketrecords 10 жыл бұрын
I know all about "l'affaire du collier", and she was wronged by the cleric who lied and said that he knew nothing about the transaction when he was the one who instigated it. She committed no crime and had no role in the theft. That event changed her outlook and was one of the reasons she decided to leave her life of frivolity and reckless spending behind and be more responsible and have more compassion for the needy, which she did show later in her life. She did not starve her people. Again, she was not involved in political affairs. She fled with her family because she knew she could place no trust in a mob, which she was correct in. Bloodshed and wanton slaughter and kangaroo courts are two different things. It was no revolution, it was a bloody uprising by an unruly and vicious mob.

While I think in retrospect we can see Marie Antoinette as a sympathetic figure (and there is much to be gained from a retrospective examination of her role in the revolution and her relationship with the 3rd estate), but it is also important to remember the context of her execution: the French people were starving, the political atmosphere was intensely fierce, and here is a rich woman who at least appears to the French populace as ineffective as a queen and leader, and at the other end of the political and economic spectrum. I don't think we can really blame the revolution for the death of Marie Antoinette in its revolutionary fervor either.

What I didn't like it is she was treated so terribly, held in a dungeon among other tortures. As the queen consort, she had no choice in how France was handled. Her husband was treated much better when he was executed
@amanitamuscaria7690
@amanitamuscaria7690 9 жыл бұрын
+Alicia Coburg that is because of her poor first impression to the French people. Her inability to produce an heir for many years caused the French people to doubt her. She got all the blame. Things began to escalade from there, and her relationship was already ruined with the French people. Think of someone you hate. Everything they do just frustrates you, and you may even blow it out of proportion just to find something else to hate about them. Yes, she was the queen consort and held no power, but Louis was also indecisive. It was an unfortunate turn of events.
@SnitchSeeker
@SnitchSeeker 7 жыл бұрын
Also, not being able to produce an heir wasn't her fault. Louis was a stupid teen that was grossed out by sex and would not have any with her. It wasn't until one of her brothers from Austria came over and literally forced them to copulate did Louis became more open-minded to the idea.

Funny thing is that "let them eat cake" was not being "nasty". just look in the bakery aisle in your supermarket now. Flour that is suitable for making bread is more expensive than that used for cake and biscuit making. I can pay as little as 15p for plain or self rising flour, but atleast 60p for bread making flour.

There's no proof that she said that quote
@Dermacrosis
@Dermacrosis Жыл бұрын
@@RandomVidsforthought That is also true, but I was going more with the common understanding. As what you have said, and I agree with it, does not cancel that out. Even more so now as the ownbrand cake/pastry making flour in supermarkets is atleast 3 times cheaper than the strong bread making flour. Though why it is called "strong" I do not know.

I am a Peillon ancestor, still our name. We are all (girls, middle names were once Ann-Marie) with the surname . We had Ann Marie through our family, I have It, my daughter. We are our namesake, which we still hold from OZ, NZ, Mauritius Islands, ?. after leaving through world war2. My great great grandparents came to Oz, became citizens and returned to Leon, every ForeFather. Unfortunate. but I guess their ancestors had seen it all. their Ancestors home. revolution, home In medieval Peillon. Still wear my name Proudly, and so does the ruins of my ancestors home. Over here In oz I am Aunty to an Indigenous Aborigine Mob. big one 'eh. My Grandparents and Fathers blood Is rich In me, As Is my Passion of my Mob here In oz.

If the Katherine the great video was kicking MTV in the 90's style, this one is somber and painful in it's presentation, which fits the theme of the song really well. They should have shown this video as part of the trial. Maybe they'd understand and let her keep her head.

lots of people saying her story is sad. i don't think so. she was naive and maybe that's not her fault, but someone has to claim the blame and her situation as an insensitive stupid teenager led to her demise. yes, she was a victim of the system, but her murder wasn't entirely unjustified
