One big ethical question looms over all the excitement about the potential of big data: how do we maintain privacy while gleaning insight from all of this collected information? Marie Wallace offers some fresh thinking on the topic. One of the ideas she shares is to encourage transparency…to have retailers share some of the assumptions they’re making about us - as they’re advertising to us.
Marie is currently an analytics strategist for IBM, having spentmore than a decade in the research and development division building content, semantic and social analytics technologies, which today underpin such solutions as IBM Watson. In recent years her primary focus has been on the analysis of people networks to deliver smarter, personalized and contextualized solutions for individuals and organizations. She is a globally recognized thought leader, with an active social media presence and popular blog, AllThingsAnalytics.com.
About the TED Institute: We know that innovative ideas and fresh approaches to challenging problems can be discovered inside visionary companies around the world. The TED Institute helps surface and share these insights. Every year, TED works with a group of select brands to identify internal ideators, inventors, connectors, and creators. Drawing on the same rigorous regimen that has prepared speakers for the TED main stage, TED Institute works closely with each partner, overseeing curation and providing intensive one-on-one talk development to sharpen and fine tune ideas.

...."didn't look at privacy as a barrier to innovation instead they looked at it as an opportunity to innovate.". Wow that is powerful.

A sub-title would be really appreciated as many of the key words were not understandable.

Transparency is certainly the future. I think many employee and consumer advocacy programs may start opaque and then gradually roll out transparency.

For a company to collect constant data of a user you might as well say you have a chronological filed case on a person and depending on the type of data it can be used to revenue revenue more money from somebody else’s stories or they can be sabotaged for criminal purposes or it can be used to go against I constitutional rights are raped her privacy no one should be making money off of someone else’s data it’s like robbing you it’s like trespassing it’s like overstepping your boundaries unless do you say that’s not mine

I don’t think a choice should have to be made I think that it should be for bidden and used for the ones who created the data and would like to share their own data or if somebody created data it would have to be a permission to share if they choose it should be used as a tool for customers not as a tool for underlining unknown reasons for All applications

I think it should be considered extreme excessive stalking harassment and complete invasion and unethical study of human. Invasion of basic human right and technology camera used to take pictures and invade privacy with no purpose . breaking and entering tho now thru computer so virtual stalking. You broke in my life viewing me not thru window but technical device excuse app. Dont think so. Same sick behavior just excuse to be a peeping tom stalking breaking and entering criminal. Using bs app as cover. Opportunity that has no purpose. Not acceptable and criminal. PATHETIC
