I sew. I took a class from a professional British seamstress when I was young and chose to make a wool a-line skirt with an uneven plaid with a matching solid wool blazer. Was looking to get the most education out of my time. We got the plaid seams on the skirt to match. I will pass on a few things I learned: Matching seams- the easiest way to match plaid seams is to cut your first pattern piece. Then layout the next cutting of that pattern piece with the first fabric piece still attached. You can then move the piece around on your uncut fabric until the patterns on the cut and Uncut piece match. When your seams match up pin the fabric and cut piece down onto uncut fabric. cut being careful not to ruin the piece you already cut. For unlike pattern pieces (ex: sleeve to a body) you can pin and cut one piece. Do not unpin after cutting. Position this combined cut and pinned piece and the paper piece that attaches to it together so that the seams match up. Use crayons or colored pencils to color the plaid pattern onto a central portion of the seam of the paper pattern you need to cut next. Use this colored part on the paper pattern to position the pattern piece on your fabric so the plaid matches. On most uneven plaids you need to pick what part of the plaid you want to match because you will not get it all to work. Pick a dominant stripe. The reason your blue stripes matched at first but then slowly didn’t most likely has to do with stretching the bias fabric as you sew. You get inadvertent stretching with how you handle feeding your fabric. If you tend to pull too much at the back you get stretch. You did a better job not pulling the fabric on the orange stripe side. You can also get stretching just from the mechanics of how feed dogs work. Top and bottom dogs don’t always feed at same speeds depending upon the fabric and your presser foot tension. To get rid of that use an even feed foot or if you don’t have one try adjusting the presser foot tension. Use scrap to test. Hope this all makes sense! You did a great job!

I actually thought what's the point of watching hours of podcast about someone's finished objects and WIPs and being jealous of not been able to do anything. But your podcasts have changed my views and made me realize that it means lot more than just showing off what you're making but inspiring you to learn and try something new. Being a newbie to knitting, I've learned a lot about knitting variations, introduced to famous knitting gurus and convinced myself to knit for my loved ones. I especially enjoy knitting for my 11 months old daughter and hope to knit as much as you knit for your daughter. You're my inspiration. Thank you so much for such noble efforts you guys are putting to inspire others and making them believe in themselves.

Andrea, I am learning so much through your very professional podcasts. Just to name one- I have always been careful to read patterns prior to embarking on my knitting, but basically to be sure I understood all the stitches employed. Your thorough descriptions of pattern construction have taught me to understand the construction and break down the pattern by things like you mention “here’s a column of cable, next to it a section of twisted stitches and then a section of lace”. I think this is going to help me take on more complex patterns. I also love your attention to finishing details, and like Natasja Hornsby mentioned in your interview with her, I will now pay much more attention to those details which truly make the difference in the overall appearance of the garment. Thank you so much!

Fabulous episode Andrea and Andrew. I am in awe of Marie's designs. If only I could manage one of these! I struggle to knit at the moment as my hands are very tingly, how on earth does she (or anyone) knit for such long periods. I will probably buy the book just to drool over.

Adding a narrow strip of fusible stabilizer (interfacing) along the stitching line for the zipper will improve most zipper installations as well as making the sewing much easier. Invisible zippers look neater and often are easier to insert by machine than regular lapped zippers. Not sure which type you used. Very interesting podcast; professional and well done. Thanks.

Tip for your sewing Andrea if you cut pattern pieces that can stretch out of shape like on the bias try stay stitching your pieces before you see them together. i.e. sew a line of stitching on each piece within the hem allowance. I love the interviews you've been doing. Such thoughtful questions! Nice tutorial on the difference between brioche and double knitting. However, you should be twisting the colors together at the beginning of the rows where the row starts with double knitting. Showing the pocket it great for demonstration, but if this were complete double knitting fabric, you'd have two pieces of knitting that fell away from each other.

When you cut on the bias, you need to run a loose stay-stitch inside and along the edge and pull on the back thread to ease the stripes back into its original place so you can match up the stripes and checks. I also used to sew Andrea, so the experience comes in handy. Also there's a danger of the seam becoming a bit shirred or puckered so the first stitch-up should also be a loose stitch so you can run your finger nails and fingers down the seam to ease out the puckering and then run a tighter stitch over or alongside the first seam stitch

Lovely episode again! You could try reinforcing bias skirt fabric with twill tape in the selvage to stiffen fabric for the zipper to stitch it to. X
