There are two things that help me: One is to connect a new habit with an old one. If I e.g. listen to music every day because I love it, I can connect this with a chore I do not love too much and distract me. The second one is I am very patient and loving with my "I don't wanna do thiiiis!" voice. I do not tell it to shut up, but I explain why it is so much better to do it, why it will feel better and that there is always time for the voice to whine later. It takes a minute longer, but the voice actually often turns into more motivation because I figured out what the real issue was and solved it.

Summarizing and adding a little bit: Steps to be consistent 1) List all things you want to do. Find why you love the thing, you want to be consistent at, and then stick to it. 2) Progressively gain skills by focusing on only one at a time. 3) Schedule all of your life around the damn thing (Keep it at the top of your priority list) 4) Ignore voices in your head. 5) Don't worry and leave the practice if you miss one day or two. After sometime, that consistency will become a habit and then you can move on to next skill.

The "ignore your feelings" totally hits home for me! Not because i need to work on it, but because it is something I teach! As a musician and piano teacher, my students think that music is an emotional endeavour, but really, as you are learning the skills, it is the slow, monotonous and focused work that gets you ahead. Once the skills are mastered, THEN you can tap into the emotions and communicate the story you want through the music! Thanks for your videos, Marie! They are always encouraging and inspiring me. ❤

+faith1characterhope Tell me about it! I'm currently learning how to play the piano with my left hand using chords which is not an easy task for a beginner although I can play any melody effortlessly with my right hand by ear without notes but the left hand is a totally different story. I know that once I overcome the tough beginning, the sky is the limit :)

I'm a music education major currently working on jeux d'eau by ravel. had I not begged my teacher to let me keep this song, my senior recital would have fallen apart. this song inspires and motivates me to keep going. do you have any tips to correct bad back posture? I've mostly corrected my hand technique, but after hours of practice my back hurts and I can't go on even though I would like to.

+Betty-Alexandria Pride A couple of tricks I use are visualisations. 1. Imagine your head is a pool ball and your back is a pool cue, imagine your head (pool ball) is balancing perfectly on your neck (pool cue). this is a horseback riding technique to keep relaxed in the neck. 2. Imagine your ears are suspended by 2 threads from the ceiling. this lifts the head and helps to realign the spine. 3. A simple yoga trick -- sitting in the position you would normally sit at the piano, but without anything in front of you. Part your knees and drop your back and head between your knees. While taking slow deep breaths, roll your spine up as if you are rebuilding your spine, vertebrae by vertebrae. 4. lastly, as you are playing--are you hunching down over the keyboard? Try practicing while keeping your back upright and relaxed. Train your eyes to look down without bringing the neck down. Hope that helps!

Wow, this brings some understanding to the point. I struggled because I am also trying to learn to listen to myself more. I see what you mean when you are talking about developing the skills. Of course it isn't going to move us the same way until after we know how to make the music happen.

My five steps to be consistently consistent 1. Think positive 2. Write a to do list 3. Focus on small things because it all adds up 4. Make it a habit, the more I do it the more it becomes consistent in my life. 5. Lastly I try my hardest not to beat myself up when I fall short but to keep trying each day for better

One thing that has really helped me stay consistent & push through 'the feelings' of not wanting to do anything is turning on music that motivates me (Yonce never fails me) What this does is triggers a can do / energizing attitude that gets me in a flow, reminds me of my why and empowers me me accomplish things.

The old adage "21 days to make a habit" is slightly inaccurate. Most humans need 25-30 days of daily reinforcement - and if you miss a day, you've got to start over. Staying focused on the end result (and taking the focus off of YOU), helps keep the momentum and ditch the fear. Also, a colleague once told me "if it's not scheduled, it's stressful." And so putting things in my calendar - and creating boundaries to reinforce those calendared events makes a big difference. But the BIGGEST thing that helps me stay consistent - or should I say person - is my accountability partner. There's no judgement, but she helps me stay on track... and we've been working together for several years now. Having someone else who has your back and wants to see you succeed - without judgement - makes a HUGE difference.

Lisa Robbin Young SO TRUE! When I was in high school and I had so many inspiring classmates, they inspired me to do more and better! Now that I'm in college, is a lot more chaotic and everyone follows their path.. it's a little less inspiring to be in an environment where everyone is very independent..
@LisaRobbinYoung
@LisaRobbinYoung 7 жыл бұрын
humanyoda It can shorten the process, and painful emotions are generally the most effective, because our amygdala is wired to protect us from pain, but most people don't want to re-wire their brain using painful methods (shock therapy, anyone?). Studies have also shown that it takes longer for painful emotions to subside than happy, joyful emotions, which means, more positive reinforcement is needed to counteract even one negative/disempowering emotion connected to the new neural path. That's why 25-30 days is recommended.
@LisaRobbinYoung
@LisaRobbinYoung 7 жыл бұрын
Stefania That's why you need to look at the "how" and not the "what" - look to how they are doing the things that inspire you, rather than the specifics. There's often crossover from one discipline to another, and you can "borrow" those lessons and apply them to whatever is important to YOU. For example, if you're a dancer, and your best friend is an econ major, who's looking to go into high finance, that may not mean much to you, but watching HOW he goes after that dream can show you some things you can transfer to your path (networking, building his circle of influence, asking powerful questions of leaders in his niche).

The most important steps I've taken so far to being consistent are: 1) to not write myself off as hopeless every time I stumble, and 2) to celebrate little victories. Even two weeks is worth aknowledgement, and sometimes, just sitting with a small sense of success is the most incredible motivation to get up and move towards more of the same. Lots of little successes add up to overall success, or at least, progress!

for me i realized those feelings are samskaras or habituated patterns they will change after u keep repeating a behaviour. basically dont listen to ur feelings theyre just there to keep you safe but you know better. u know truly who u are and u are a winner believe that and u stay consistent. and no matter what happens u stick to your goal. you never get tired and u can always sleep. you're more powerful than you think believe this and you're unstoppable quit rationalizing bad behaviour believe in urself

I use to have this morning routine that I felt I had to follow in order to get things done. Although I was "sticking" to the routine I wasn't being consistent with what I really needed to accomplish throughout my day. I am more consistent now that I adjust my morning routine by listening to segments these right after I wake up. The advice stays with me all day.

In order to be consistent on something I often write it into my daily sheets to read. These sheets are little reminders of what is important, especially in treating myself well. Say if I want to do yoga, not only do I write down my entire yoga routine and stick it on my bulletin board but I also right messages that express health, strength and calm as some of my top priorities.

What helped me is actually only thinking about going to the gym or thinking about the start. I see what you mean by kind of getting it to stick to your mind as a priority, but you could also only think about putting it into your schedule. Instead of this big task you have to complete now you have made it a small task that is easier to accomplish. Then the rest will take care of itself.

I finally gave into the "wahhhhhhhh but I don't wanna!" voice and have started falling off the wagon. I should ignore my feelings and catch the wagon instead of waiting for the next one. Thanks Marie!

Catch the wagon is differently something I learned these past few days ,when I was working in sales I would set my schedule to knock these hours and set these appts and so on and so fourth, but there were days that “something “would come up with family needing me to do some and or a issue with car or some. This would make me feel like you said the wagon is just leaving now like my momentum is messed up like I couldn’t get back on it then no lie it will take me 3weeks to 3months to do it again. Now this week the lesson get catch the wagon meaning just cuz you missed a day due to a event doesn’t mean you can’t keep going the following days and catch some success still. I’m glad I learned it

It is prioritizing as you have explained but also, reducing the pressure that we can put on ourselves to get everything down now, rather than, looking around seeing what is important and is right in front of you. Example: Spending time with my son and looking after him is far more important than crafting which i am doing whilst listening and catching up on my youtube, but I know without putting on the pressure I will get this done too. It is not able completing my To do list all at once, but what I can accomplish in each day and hour of the day. Making sure I take time out for myself, and this crafting and watching KZfaq, aswell as exercising. Thank you for the vlog very inspiring, Carrie X

What helped me is actually only thinking about going to the gym or thinking about the start. You could also only think about putting it into your schedule. Instead of this big task you have to complete now you have made it a small task that is easier to accomplish. Then the rest will take care of itself.

Scheduling my priorities definitely helps me be consistent. If I know it HAS to be done, I will do it. If it is something that can be done at a later date, I tend to go with the later date.

what hepls me be consistent is making small moves every single day...for example, I want to learn english, so I do this for 20 mintues every single day-every time I get the feeling of this time isn't enough but the satisfication of being consistent really worth it....in the past I was doing English for hours and hours but days ahead I quit, and this is really made me so upset.. Also when I get the feeling of "I don't feel like it", I tell myself: let us try it out and if it really dosen't worth it, then you can stop it...but guess what?! most of the time I find out it really worth it ...and I satisfy myself because I did what I have to do.. thank you for this helpful video..

Reminding myself that the euphoria of learning a new skill wears off, and its up to me to persevere if I want to succeed. Especially on the days when those inner voices and my tired body have joined forces...sheer determination has to kick in overdrive.

I've been working out for almost six years now and I still fight to ignore my feelings and stick to my scheduled workouts. I still fall off the wagon, but I treat every week as a new opportunity to succeed. What always helps me is to remember that sitting on my couch is not a good place to gauge how it will feel when I get to the gym. I alway remind myself that once I get there, I will do what I need to do and it won't be as hard as I'm dreading. I also always remember that even if it's not a great workout, it still counts towards keeping my fitness goals; as long as I show up and give it a try I am succeeding.
