Their final amateur performance and revenge on the Protopopov's who had beaten them for the gold medal in Innsbruck two weeks earlier. They won in a very close decision.

Just ran across this today. Such elegant lines and deep knee bends. The low (or no) barriers always fascinates me. With the jumps done today, there would definitely be a few skaters ending up in the seating!

Such rarities should be kept in access not only in KZfaq. Recently, a lot has been removed (there are suddenly copyright claims) or the music changes, in order to save at least a picture!

One of the possible variants of video distribution in other social networks and torrent sites, there are also rewriting programs, so all hope is for obsessed figure skating lovers. All this, of course, will make search difficult, but the situation with respect for copyright has already reached the point of absurdity. I consider it impossible to watch a video without sound or with a modified sound.

This may not be as athletic as today's skating but I think it's more aesthetically pleasing. I feel like figure skating still had a very strong "art" aspect back then, nowadays the focus seems to lie more on the sporty side

They had nice unison in the beginning especially, and did some tricks that were pretty entertaining. Her position in the overhead lift was terrible/comical by today's standards, but considering a few years earlier most pairs were doing just little half lifts, it was all pretty good. The German crowd really loved it, and the Germs were probably fired up by having another gold medalist with Manfred Schnelldorfer in the men's competition that year. Kilius & Bäumler won two Worlds but came in 2nd to the Protopopovs in two Olympics. After figure skating, they recorded some German pop hits together and he went on to make a dozen German movies. Could either of them sing? No, not really.

I found this little spot, link below, on Marika and HJ, when Marika turned 75 years old. She talks about starting out on roller skates, and what a great life she's had. The German public went nuts for them at the time. They were both adored like pop stars, as a "dream pair." The second link is from a comedy sketch and the skating lyrics to The Merry Widow are very cleverly done. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/it-Ed9ioqbquhok.html Hier ist ein großartiger Comedy-Sketch mit dem Eiskunstlauf-Paar von 1971. Der Teil, in dem der Gastgeber Marika hochhebt, ist gut gemacht. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nt5_l7OWvcuamIU.html One of the odd aspects of German culture during the time Marika and Hans J were idolized, being a very musical country, they gave skaters opportunities to become pop stars, or actor/singers in the case of Marika and Hans J, because they couldn't get enough of them, even if their singing talents were marginal. Here's one of 1964 Olympic men's skating gold medalist Manfred Schnelldorfer singing, which is pretty...well, judge for yourself: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdOZgKmg2t7OemQ.html

Thank you for your comments, so true. A trip down memory lane for me. So enjoyable. I was still living in Germany then. And that song by Manfred Schnelldorf. I loved it. Memories came flooding back. Sad and sweet at the same. I was 14 when my parents moved us to the United States. I always wished that we had not come.

Floskate, why did they lose the Olympic Gold? Did they underperform? I know they lost to the legendary Protopoppovs but they had dominated this 2 year period and were clearly the favorites, but lost in an upset.
@aliguyswing
@aliguyswing 4 жыл бұрын
They lost both the Olympic Gold and the Olympic Silver. In 1965 International Olympic Committee decided to strip of their Silver medal because of the contract Kilius-Bäumler had concluded with an ice revue before the Games.

@@rolandgreen7484 Yes Marika stumbled on the double loop. The Canadian judge - infamous in her strict judging over the years - Suzanne Francis - marked them at 5.5/5.4 and placed them behind the Protopopovs, so she was not looked at kindly by the Germans when she showed up here to judge the Worlds.
