Marillion sounded like evolved prog when I first heard them in 1983. I knew they were something special. They are excellent story-tellers musically and lyrically. Loud with the lights off is the best way to listen.

The music speaks for it self, but I will put a light at the album cover! It is always something new popping out there. Like this album, for instance, someone recognizing the person in the laft corner, the one with round glasses? As a hint; Pearl. The bar is crowded with dead persons.

Got to see them in concert at the Palladiumin LA, 1986. What a great concert. I believe they played nearly 20 songs over 2 hr concert including this whole album.

heartbreaking hearing this album about addiction and the splintering of the band itself - and then there's Fish, sitting by himself at the bar, while the band is together at the table behind him. If only we knew then this would be their swan song.

Nobody gives enough credit to Steve Rothery, one of the very best guitarist . His sound, his note choice . He took the best from Gilmour, Steve Hackett and Andy Latimer, but without being a copy . He is better than his models . Fish , the singer also succeed the same tour de force . Obviously influenced by Peter Gabriel and Peter Hammil he is not a pale copy , he has soul . It's very rare that in a genre so generic (rock prog, or even worst neo-prog) one band can rise above his influence . The first albums with Fish, and the very first with Steve Hogarth , the new singer (Season 'end) are definitive prog masterpieces .

Man, this brings memories. Was a big Marillion fan back then, and then this album came out. Blew my mind, they were amazing in this record! I could imagine years and years of their music in our future… and then Fish left the band after this masterpiece.

Another phenomenal band that did less than nothing in the US market. Usually presented as a Genesis rip-off act by our journalists as a possible excuse to explain their absence from American airwaves. This is a band full of virtuoso musicians, especially the guitarist Steve Rothery and drummer Ian Mosely. The Genesis rip off shit went away mostly once this vocalist, Fish, left the band and was replaced with Steve Hogarth. Good job bringing this band out, Paul. The people need to hear a lot of their catalog.

Cheers Chaz. Always hate the Genesis link. Sure they were an influence but that's all. The Gabriel era stuff, I believe Marillion used it like a building block. Genesis was a primordial soup compared to this, IMHO, lol Rothery is great. A most melodic player on top of all his other gifts.

@@chazblitz They were big over here. Fish quit after this album because he thought they were too big. That said I still think they never got the recognition they deserved. They should be up there with Floyd 🙂

@paulfenwick8767 I like the early stuff with Fish, and I like some of his solo stuff better than his Marillion years. And a lot of the Hogarth stuff is great, too. How they weren't big over here baffles me.

@@chazblitz Musically, the Hogarth era is ok but his voice irritates me so much. Their songs are all "very nice" but have none of the edge of the Fish era. It's like they've been castrated. I know many disagree but's that's my view.

First thing, there was something wrong with the sound, it kept going loud and then soft throughout. Genesis were one of many influences for Marillion and personally I think Fish, the vocalist is better than Collins and Gabriel put together. I agree with you about how this is put together brilliantly, so good musically yet no one instrument hogs it all. The guitarist, Steve Rothery is brilliant. He can play fast and hard with the best but, in my opinion is the most melodic player too. Lyrically, this is Fish at his best and it's the way he sings the lyrics, so much feeling. Good reaction both of you, just get the sound sorted, lol

Thanks Paul! Dan’s mic was blaring loud and during editing it was hard to level his, Sifa’s and you tubes sound together. There is a separate audio of Marillion playing with the originallly recorded video so that when Dan talks, he doesn’t completely block out the music. We truly apologize. We’ll try to re edit again and see if there’s any difference. What a killer track though. Marillion went all out and it was awesome. Thanks again!

Incidentally, this is off the album I sent you last year. It's a concept album. I know life is hectic for you both but if you get any time, listen to the the whole album.

Great, great band, my friend from Lima, Peru said to me back then in 1987 "have you heard Marillion ? sounds like Genesis but better, I said no, let me look for it. I was lucky to see them live at the Ritz in NYC last time together with Fish, the rest is history.

I saw them life twice, on their "Micplaced Childhood" and "Clutching at Staws" tour. Since you just said this is more like one piece, that was even more the thing for Misplaced Childhood where Fish even announced that they now play their last song, and its called "Misplaced Childhood", so they played the whole album as one song. Like it also is on the album, where one song just transists into the other without a pause. Only on my LP of course, for technical reasons, there was a pause between side A and B, not sure how its on CD. Also a lot of people called them a "Genesis copy" first, but i guess its just because there are not many bands that sound similiar to Genesis, and Marillion of course has a lot in common with them, but in the end they also sound quite different, mostly more "modern". But of course .. Fish sounded quite a bit like Gabriel, Steven Rothery a lot like Steve Hackett and then the keyboard underneath .. but i saw it positive since i love Genesis and like i said, there are not really that much bands that play music like them. Especially not as good.

See him play his last gig at Fife Aid!! What a night :) Then seen Fish in Falkirk... cannae remember the year and another time in Brentwood, Essex. He was/is such a story teller. Hell always be The Scottish Poet to me (sorry Rab)

Much of the music criticism that massacred Marillion in the 80s and 90s has now died, become senile or fallen into irrelevance. I'm happy to see that the new generations - free from prejudice and the hateful opinions of unhappy journalists - are appreciating Marillion's music more and more.

Love it. One of my favorite band with Genesis, Pink Floyd. Lots of jewels to dig in for you. Fish and Hogarth eras, lots of masterpieces. My top 5: 1- Brave (1993) 2- Marbles (2004) 3- Afraid of sunlight (1995) 4- Misplaced childhood (1985) 5- This strange engine (1997)

Even though the singers changed over the years, they are still story tellers! You can categorize them as prog rock, their songs can be very long. You could check out 'This strange engine' live with the new singer. Oh and they are live as good (no better) as in studio!

Love the Fish era Marillion. The new stuff is too polished and timid to be very interesting for my taste, though I finally learned to like the album Brave. But hearing this makes me sad for the band that was..

Introduction was nice but it just just went silly ...please don't talk over the music Dan....your mic is too strong..something wrong with levels...Musically it is good...they know what they are doing....I'm trying to hear it but sorry Dan...your voice level is frightening. It is amazing this band began during that appalling punk illusion,,,British music journalists think they are more important then the bands and music and dictate what the public gets served up on their musical plate... We never heard this band in Australia which is bizarre as they can play...and are original in song and music construction.
