One of the greatest bands of all time.

This song is a tragic conclusion to a very emotionally heavy concept album. A girl jumps off a bridge to her death. They decided to have an alternate ending on the LP that was a happy song of the girl being saved at the end instead. Many of Marillion's songs are like movie soundtracks. They tell stories with "tone poems". This is indeed a very good band who sound even better live. Steve Hogarth, the vocalist puts his whole being into every song. Yes, their guitarist Steve Rothery is a master of his craft. One of the best melodic prog-style players. Their song "Easter" is a great example. It has one of the most beautiful solos in it. And they're still doing it after 40 years!

One of the best bands..for sure the most underrated band

A bit of back history. Marillion were formed in 1979 in Aylesbury, UK. They had some commercial success in the 80's with their first singer, but have been pretty much ignored by mainstream media since. They are the band that invented Crowdfunding and were the first band to have their own website. Far from fading away, they have an incredibly loyal global fanbase and, in 2017, sold out the famous Royal Albert Hall in 4 minutes. They have just released their 20th studio album which contains probably the best track they've ever recorded, Care (linked below). The studio versions of their songs are great, but, in order to really appreciate them, you need to watch the live recordings. On stage, this band are on a totally different planet. May I suggest you find live versions of Neverland, Go (from the Royal Albert Hall) or Estonia, before attempting the more heavyweight tracks like This Strange Engine, The Invisible Man, Gaza, always go for the live versions too. I've known of them for a long time. I had a conversation with a Greek-Australian woman I worked with, and she was telling me of her husband's frustrations with Australia. One of his complaints is that nobody had heard of Marillion. Apparently, they really are something in Europe!

Marillion are a superb Prog Rock band. Very much influenced by Genesis. The song is about a girl contemplating suicide, she is standing on the bridge about to take 'The Great Escape' to end her life, it's just so sad. The melody is beautiful and lyrics so poignant, she says when they are trying to talk her down 'don't ask me why I'm doing this you wouldn't understand, your asking the wrong questions you couldn't understand, A bridge is not a high place. the 52nd floor, Icarus would know a mountain isn't far to fall, when you've fallen, when you've fallen from the moon'. Icarus of course flew too close to the sun and his wings melted and he fell to earth. She is explaining how far she has fallen, and there is no way back. The water at the end is of course her drowning as water is the last thing she hears. An incredibly sad song but absolutely brilliant. In the middle part of the song Steve Hogarth sings, and she says' why did you hurt the very one that you should have protected', a possible link to here to the girl being abused as a child, and how this affected her life and driven her to this suicide. A brilliant song.

Marillion are one of the best bands it the world with a 40+ year history of amazing music. I hope you enjoyed it and will cover more of them in the future :)

Great album, brilliant band. Their first album came out in 1983 with a different singer called Fish who left in 1987 after four albums to be replaced by the current singer Steve Hogarth in 1989. Pretty much a neo prog band influenced by Pink Floyd, as you correctly picked up, and Genesis. They've done some brilliant work over the years, including their latest album (they've produced 20 albums) released this year. Some fans prefer the Fish era, which is more proggy and Genesis-like, whereas others prefer Hogarth; but I appreciate them both and how they've evolved over the years.

Old and new Marillion are amazing.

To appreciate this track and the album in its entirety you have to know that its a concept album covering some pretty heavy real life content. So its a difficult song to pigeon hole without having the back story knowledge. The album is definitely not commercial but definitely is a masterpiece!

For me it's a gut-wrenching and transcendent climax to the most powerful concept album I know. I can't imagine it would mean much to someone just hearing it in isolation. I don't know why commentators feel the need to reveal the details of the story of the album. Why deprive people of the pleasure of finding out for themselves? That's like giving away the plot and ending of a book or film. Spoilers.

Your Pink Floyd analogy is pretty much right. Both bands did a few concept albums

There was a movie, produced by the band that went with this. It was very heavy, and was inspired by a true story. This would have been a very different reaction video, and would have given you understanding. The water at the end was the girl lying dead, washed up on the shore, after she threw herself off the bridge.

Great band I'm more into former singer "Fish" era of the band 1981 to 88 .Kayleigh being there biggest hit in UK no2 very emotional song heartbreaking very worth discovering that period ,little similar to Genesis .Steve Hogarth as an incredible voice. Marillion is amazing band!

This penultimate track of the album is such an emotional piece within the context of the arc of the story the album..it gets me everytime 😭.. its a beautiful pain in the depths of me it brings to the surface.. fantastic Marillion and Rotherys guitar at their emotional best 👌

I think it's a great track, but that's with many years hindsight. For me Marillion were always fronted by Fish and they peaked with the album 'Misplaced Childhood', so when he left the band my interest faded. As a result I never even listened to this later stuff with Steve Hogarth on vocals until pretty recently - my loss I suspect!

Marillion, an amazing band but unfortunately very niche.

Whilst this is a worthy tune and Hogarth is a really good singer, the original songs with Fish are very different. Fish's lyrics coupled with his deliveries are far more compelling and true to life. Their debut album is untouchable prog and appeals to non prog fans. Any song from it is worthy of review, but to choose one song - Forgotten Sons. I remember seeing them on the Script tour and Fish"s performance was incredible during this song.
