Marin Alsop works with two rising female conductors, Lina González-Granados and Alexandra Arrieche, on their technique and how to break into the male-dominated industry.
Great Performances: The Conductor tells the story of the first female conductor of a major symphony, Marin Alsop. Documenting Alsop’s journey from playing the violin as an ambitious nine-year-old who longed to conduct, to attending Juilliard, to creating her own all-female string orchestra and swing band, to ultimately becoming music director of Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Despite repeated rejection from the classical music establishment, Alsop persevered and blazed her own trail which gained her attention as a conductor and opened new opportunities for her that led to studying with legendary composer Leonard Bernstein.

I just watched this documentary on PBS. My favourite thing Maestro Alsop told us was he father giving her a box full of batons the day after her music teacher told her it’s impossible for a woman to conduct an orchestra. Bravo to every father of girls who encouraged them in their pursuit of their dreams. Too many in my experience have inadvertently suppressed dreams or out right prevented their fulfillment.

I saw Marin conduct The Rite Of Spring in London and she was mesmerising and made such a connection with the audience as well as the orchestra. She was wonderful.

I (an American woman) remember being in conducting class in Europe and them coooonstantly telling me to conduct stronger, conduct heavier…and then saying “why do you conduct so hard?!??” It’s like no matter how “strong” I conduct, it’s never enough, because I’m not a man, and they can’t ever even perceive my gesture as strong.

Isn't she proof you don't have to look a certain way to be a successful conductor ? She could slot right into an all male 80s hair band.

I have nothing against gay people. I hope though straight women are conductors. A male family member came out years ago, he liked to cook, did all the cleaning his then wife raved about this help. We other wives did all this, child rearing & full time school or work. “I knew he was gay because he liked Women’s work.” Someone posted in response to the promotion of this documentary on this or another post, “why not do a story on transgender men winning women’s sports.” All these old role stereotypes are still here, still working at keeping women in particular down & any male who doesn’t fit male stereotypes. It’s 2022, not 1952.(or 1822)

@@Tennisisreallyfun I’m proud of her hard work. I believe she was blessed with a huge talent and that talent has nothing to do with her gender or sexuality. I’m all for supporting people’s choices instead of denigrating them or pigeonholing.
