Follow your intuition. Have courage. Do what you imagine. And always be completely present in the moment. Marina Abramović on what it really means to be an artist: "A great artist has to be ready to fail."
Meet the charismatic performance artist Marina Abramović in this interview on what it means to be an artist, waking up each morning with an urge to be creative.
Abramović says that the most courageous act in the history of mankind was Christopher Columbus discovering America, which was in fact a mistake, since they went into the unknown believing they would reach India. She also explains how the best advice she received as a student was to never allow things to become routine.
A good artist will have one really good idea in their life, while a brilliant artist may have two, so one has to be careful with the ideas, Abramović says. She explains that she always does the work she is most afraid of, which is most different to what she has done before. Finally Abramović adds that the performing artist has to be completely present in the moment, and cannot be thinking of the next step. You have to follow intuition, have courage and do what you imagine.
Marina Abramović (1946) became world famous after her retrospective 'The Artist is Present' at MoMA in 2010, which was followed by a documentary film premiering in 2013. Abramović began her career in the early 1970s and has recently begun to describe herself as the 'grandmother of performance art'. Abramović's work explores the relationship between performer and audience, the limits of the body and the possibilities of the mind. To Ambramovic the purpose of art is the transformation of the artist and of the viewer.
Marina Abramovic was interviewed by Christian Lund in New York, September 2013.

"wake up in the morning and you have some ideas have obsession and urge to create" I watched this vid 4-5 years ago when I was in art school, most professors told me to work hard. They would agree to what she said definitely. They said I should work hard to gather new inspiration, work hard to always think of new ideas, work hard to make new things often, and forever. I started to feel this is an endless tunnel I can't get freed from if I wanna be an artist. I lost passion over years and stopped making anything after graduation. I remember I was exactly as she describe, wake up in the morning and random ideas pops up in my head which can't stand not making it into a piece. Do I miss myself back then? I never anticipated I would change like this. Now it's been 2 years since my graduation, and my attention is suddenly focusing on contemporary art again. My guess is I want artistic expressions when I'm unhappy, as art feels like my place of birth, hometown, root (or whatever) and instinctively sniff towards it when I fear losing myself. All contemporary arts feel nostalgic and consoles me. They have energy to resonate with. Life goal is to be myself, be the most free and peaceful version of myself. Am I gonna make some art in the future, as a way to be more of myself? probably yes. In regular basis? probably no. Am I an artist? I don't know. Maybe a question that I don't have to answer at all. I just want to be...... something that I don't have to define... uhh what am I writing? lost point

Tons of artists go through dry spells. It is a privilege to have the time and resources to be a working artist 24/7, and a lot of it is timing and luck. Marina is my art mommy but I disagree with the idea that you aren't an artist if you take a break. For me there are two primary phases for an artist: inhale and exhale. At the inhale you need time, space, input of information and inspiration. Like a child, you may not appear as though you're learning your parent's language, but in fact there is a powerful rearranging happening beneath the surface. And then there is the exhale, executing your vision. Don't pressure yourself to be a machine 💗

The same thing happened to me after art school ...The reality of paying for school kicked in and I had to do something to pay the bills so I got a "regular job" and after about 2 years I started making working again. Now I am working a full time job but I'm also working on my body of work with my free time and I'm putting money aside for an MFA program. I've basically made a 5 year plan to just work and not put a lot of constraints on the direction the work goes and then see where it ends up. It's a nice way to work compared to the constraints of school deadlines. Under the constraints of a quarter or semester system I often felt like I was manufacturing evidence to match a thesis rather than being open to where the evidence took my work. Now I have the freedom to just make work and allow patterns to emerge organically and I also have the freedom to fail.

Marina Abramović's style of art is very diffcult to comprehend for a normal human being. I myself cannot understand how her mind works, therefore I cannot judge her. Many call her crazy, stupid, etc.. Yet I believe they simple cannot understand the deep incomprehensible state of mind that Marina is in.

You sound insanely pretentious and elitist it’s not hard to understand and identify evil and dark energy, all art has purpose for its existence and the purpose of her art is to desensitize and degenerate the art world and remove true objective meaning from art and promote relativism. Classic postmodern stupidity.

i just discovered about Marina this week, i knew her from somone's tweet about her most famous art, Rythm 0, and after I watch her arts performances, read many comments, so many pros and cons, said she is an evil, witch, etc, which, of course, if that's true, I strongly reject it, but I haven't found any clear evidence of her crime in her performances, did she hurt people? I've watched many of her interviews, she's so selfless, funny, and brilliant, the way she thinks about this world, I'm glad I got to know her while she's still here with us

Some people are just afraid of things they dont understand. The whole thing with AI art made me realize how many people absolutely cant understand what art is about. Marina is extremely art driven, her way of thinking about her craft and her brain can hardly be explained in words, shes a brilliant mind. Those people who dont understand call her a witch or evil for that, which is just so typical.

I would like to post a comment slightly different in tone to everybody elses. I very much respect Marina as a true artist, someone who explores the complexities of human consciousness and urges others to do so, which is definitely a positive thing. This is a forward thinking and intelligent woman whether you like it or not. I would also like to add that to say she worships the 'devil' or whatever is inaccurate, she simply understands how to manipulate energy. Anyway it's not like she's hurting anyone, when previous religiously led parties of people or individuals have done fair amount of that throughout history, those who follow spirituality, buddhism, even satanism have remained pretty peaceful. Also I suggest fully understanding what satanism is before you try to use it as an insult; its a very misunderstood practise.

it takes challenging norms and whats already been established as "art" by the mass public in order to be successful. She's absolutely right. She's true to her work, and it gets tons of hate and tons of love, and those extremes on both ends are what make her special as a conceptual and performing contemporary artist. Her work has negative surface value to the mass non-critical thinking public, but dig deeper and theres an extraordinary commentary on society and gender roles. Fantastic woman that made some well-needed advancements in our understanding of art.

@jeffykey 9 жыл бұрын
Incongruent I I would've preferred a better example, myself, but in its own right, it's still a good one. Whether there were more educated people that knew better at the time or long before, they still took the risk of going somewhere when all that was known to them was that the earth was flat. When they set out to discover "India," they believed there was a very real chance that they'd sail right off the end of the world and die. Instead, they discovered America; so their risk was rewarded in this case. The analogy still demonstrates that we miss out on many great opportunities or potential successes if we are unwilling to remove ourselves from our comfort zones in order to go after them.

His intentions are to manipulate the listener into drug abuse, self mutilation and suicide. He, in some sort of way, ruined my life by seducing me at a young age, and now I can't undo what I have done to myself. This women is just an extreme performance artist, her intentions are not sinister, although i understand that it may come across as sinister to the untrained eye.

+Nicolas Poblete People are migrants whomever they are. From the days of humans living in the savannah and jungles, picking fruit from the trees, they migrated to find food. After food, they looked for places to live, and places to herd and grow crops and so on. There has never been a time when humans have not moved. The people before white Europeans were also migrants. The people before them, the same. So what is the constant thing? the land. Which we ruin. With our ruining fossils, and throwing trash and making it dirty and poisoning it. Very selfish really. Very self obsessed, thinking one's life is important. One life time of damage from a human ruins the earth which has been here for billions of years. Look outside your small box.

One of my favorite artists! I am an artist and usually lose my mind because I am obsessed and go so deep. To be a great artist is a huge sacrifice because you know you might go without food or shelter or people to take care of you. Being such an artist requires years spent making discoveries and breakthroughs in one's art, spending countless hours alone putting things together so you can have an effect on people and make them feel better with your creativity, never asking for anything in return. What a wonderful thing. Art should transform and change, never stay the same. Marina's art changed my work a little, for the better. I'm glad I found out about her and her art. My work is no longer very representational, it goes more into the realm of abstract work, which is so exciting because it traverses many different plains of feeling and thinking, mostly feeling. In my work, I try to create interesting things without being hurtful or insensitive to people, you know, like when some artists do things that are hateful and hurtful to people. I don't do that. Otherwise, I'll try anything. Thank you so much for posting this. Marina Abramovic is such a GREAT artist. What a privilege it is to get her input and ideas. I'm sure she can help others, also. I just watched her documentary, and decided to google her to grasp a better understanding of what I saw. Sadly, I have come to the conclusion that people migrate to those that have "shock value", and worship them in their own process of it all. I do not think being, or feeling confidently nude is art at all. We were all born naked, we all see ourselves in the mirror, but we worship those that stand provocatively before us as if they are an "individual"???? We are all masterpieces by nature. Wow, a naked person, a naked person running into a wall, a self destructive naked person?? A naked person creating self harm is art? ... Those that worship this stuff.. are like, " I am intrigued" and I will make this person RICH as SHIT....??????.....Kudos to her confidence, but shame on those that think what she is/ has done is spectacular... I was born naked will die naked and most likely will not make millions off of those that think nakedness is greatness.................. give me some REAL art, with real talent.. like someone that paints phenomenal, original paintings like .........Michelangelo....???

Agree with her metaphor with breathing.. I hope someday that I could meet her learn much more about performing art with best effort Sometimes I loose myself in art but after I wake up from the art things, it’s kinda dream to me, find myself physically exhausted but somehow excited as if I went to somewhere far away from now now to trip.

Right 😂 people want to philosophise themselves out of living the good life. It's so bizarre to me.

She is the avant grade and those people never been understood by common folk. Like Dada and Surrealism in the past. That's a pure art. She talks sense.

Just know more people liked this more then dislike. She's misunderstood and she's not anything evil. She's highly spiritual... loves Tibetan teachings, shamanism, Native American teachings, etc most who say she's evil are Christian... she dislikes religion for this reason. Satanism is a religion so that's a contradiction.
