electra heart (the album this song is from) was made to be as bubblegum pop as possible and is based upon an alter ego she created, if you watch the videos in order (i think there's like 13 or 14 in total, it tells a whole story and it's a really cool concept!

Electra Heart was meant to overdue the pop sound and really focus on personality and pop culture. For this album, she collaborated with famous producers to help create these heavy pop songs. Her other albums are more true to her creative style. Even with the pop influence, the idea of this character and her life and image was all created by marina and showcases her ability to bring her ideas to life.

Primadonna is legitimately one of the greatest pop songs to ever exist and anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves

Each album from her has a very different sound. "The Family Jewels" goes into indie and is very experimental. She wrote and produced the songs by herself. "Electra Heart" is more contemporary electronic pop. She wrote and produced songs with other people including Dr Luke and Stargate. "Froot" goes back into indie and is more of a blend of the previous two albums. She wrote all the songs herself and produced it only with David Kosten. "Love + Fear" (First one with 'And the Diamonds', which refer to her fans btw, dropped from her name) goes back into pop but is more of a blend between "Electra Heart" and "Froot" with a couple of elements of "The Family Jewels". It's not as pop as "Electra Heart" though. She wrote the songs herself and worked with other producers. Over her discography, she touches alot on psychology and society. She's also friends with Lana Del Rey. They got friendship bracelets together. On each album, the biggest songs would be "Hollywood" from TFJ, "Primadonna" from EH, "Blue" from FROOT and "Handmade Heaven" from L+F.

So Marina is a bit of a funny one, this album is largely held as the pinnacle of Marinas work. There is a great deal to love on it, but as you pointed out that 2007-2012 sound has died off - it was done for specific reason as part of this caricature (and label pressure), but it can feel for some people slightly dated in sound. Add into this that this album is not really representative of Marina’s whole discography and you find this isn’t necessarily the most representative of Marina - it does however have the cheekiness and playfulness that can appear in The lyrics.

You should check out her album FROOT. It’s her best in my opinion

the whole concept of this album is so cool, the persona she created ...all the videos, love this album, it aged so well

Each album is so different from each other, her first album The Family Jewels was very experimental sound wise and has overlying themes of mental illness. Her second album, Electra Heart, which is also the era where Primadonna was from, was a concept album about the title character (who is also based off of a 1950s American housewife as well as Marilyn Monroe, Madonna, and Britney Spears) and is one cohesive story from start to finish. She is represented by 4 archetypes: housewife, beauty queen, homewrecker, idle teen. Each song belongs to one of the archetypes. She also released 11 music videos of a different order from the album and tells the same story of the life of Electra Heart. This album was a way to explore her identity. She also had a love/hate relationship with the album because her record label wanted her to be more pop and mainstream and made her work with top producers and she didn’t want that but she took it as an opportunity instead. And then you move on to Froot, her third album, it is very stripped back and rawer than her previous 2 albums. She did lyrics all by herself and her and some other person produced but it was mostly her! And then you move on to her double sided album Love+Fear where each side has 8 songs that come from a place of love and fear emotions respectively. Basically she tells the highs and lows of each side as well. There so much to analyze as you go through her discography and lyrics that I know you’d love to pick at!

My other comment aside, I’m a huge Marina fan (as are many Lana fans) so songs I would suggest to get a gold range of Marina’s body of work are: Lies How to be a heartbreaker Blue Froot To be human Orange Trees I would also highly recommend listening to the live acoustic versions she does. If you like the range you’ll love her acoustic Albums are great but I know they can take awhile so these are suggestions until you can do albums ^_^

Dr. Luke produced this, that's why it sounds so much like most bubblegum pop music (besides the whole pop superstar image and sound Marina has in mind for the Electra Heart album). Check out her FROOT music video if you wanna see something as poppy as Primadonna but truer to Marina's identity!

I definitely recommend you listen to more of her stuff. Her first album The Family Jewels was completely different to this. Specifically “Mowgli’s Road” “Obsessions” “Shampain” and “Numb” really show how many different styles she can fit into.

She goes by the name MARINA now instead of Marina and The Dimaonds. Her fanbase are called Diamonds. The Family Jewels is her debut album and for debut, it's actually good. Electra Heart album has really amazing songs, Teen Idle is my favorite from there. Also, Froot album is her self-written album. It showcases her personality even more. Electra is just an image created... anygays, you get it. Love + Fear also has some beautiful songs like Handmade Heaven, To Be Human, etc. Summary of the comment: React to her albums!

Marina did intend Electra heart to be 2009/2010 Gaga-inspired with heavy production, bass and beats. Bubblegum pop but a very intricate concept album.

After 1989 world tour, can you (if possible) react to Taylor's 'Eyes Open' and other performances in Mudd University or something. Also another thing during the rep era was the small concert in Chicago, it's a complete acoustic performance of her older and rep songs. Both are really amazing and you should totally check it out!!

I've been a huge fan of Marina for about 10 years, one of the things that I love about her is that it isn't conventional "POP" in it's essence. She mentions in one of her interviews that the reason she uses a Pop aesthetic is because Pop whether it be Pop in Music or in Art is a standout Musical or Artistic style whenever you look at developed and culturally diverse countries (even through history), so she uses it as a vehicle her messages. In a lot of her music especially the Album Electra Heart she comments on the whole materialistic and superficial culture surrounding POP music. The reason she plays or writes tracks as different characters is partly to emphasize the superficial nature of modern western culture.
