The Merlion is a mythical creature with a lion's head and a fish’s body, symbolizing Singapore's origins as a fishing village and its name "Singapura," which means "lion city" in Malay. Designed in 1964 by Alec Fraser-Brunner for the Singapore Tourism Board, the Merlion was intended as a branding icon. The first Merlion statue was installed at the mouth of the Singapore River in 1972 and moved to its current location at Merlion Park in 2002 to enhance visibility and accessibility. The statue stands as a proud emblem of Singapore’s heritage and resilience.
