I would like to point out the fact that in one episode where Worf was describing Klingon mating rituals to Wesley Crusher, Worf said that the female yells and growls a lot while the male reads love poetry.

This reminds me of when the makers of Discovery said they wanted to reinvent Klingons because they were always portrayed as warlike and cultureless, etc. They clearly never watched the show. They were very "human".

In the first season we actually saw a Klingon female try to mate with Worf. Right there on the bridge, in front of Tasha and Q. Lots of growling but I don't remember any poetry. The only poetry I remember Worf reciting in Q's presence was his answer to what would convince the Enterprise crew that Q was now mortal.

One could argue there was a little bit of build up, because Worf asked her to be Alexander's godmother or something like that. That showed how much he respected her. He went to Riker, and Riker said something like, "It sounds like you're asking me permission to date my sister." I definitely shipped Worf and Troi. It made no sense to me that after 7 years of no relationship, suddenly Troi and Riker are together in a movie! It would have made sense if Lt. Riker stayed on board and wooed Troi, and pissed off Commander Riker. I would have liked to see the former clean-shaven, and the latter wearing a fake beard. But for some reason the showrunners decided there couldn't be interpersonal conflict, and it had to be wrapped up by the end of the episode, then brought him back to turn traitor on _DS9._

@@Scripture-Man: Riker and Troi marrying would make perfect sense - but only at the end of the final season, when it can be made clear that one or both of them will be leaving the Enterprise and moving on to other assignments within Starfleet. They can only be a married couple on board any ship if one of them is no longer a Starfleet officer (probably Troi, since Troi could be a ship’s counsellor without actually being a Starfleet officer.)

That's an interesting take. I personally never liked Troi with Riker, but I did like her with Worf. The thing was, Worf was a klingnon but that wasn't all there was to him, and it was nice to see another side to him and see his character develop. Troi brought a warmth and adorableness to the relationship that was healthy for Worf, and he brought a compassion and sweetness that was great for her. It was an example of great writing and a well rounded relationship.

Spot on. With Troi, Worf was trying too hard to act like a human husband instead of a Klingon husband. He wasn’t being true to his Klingon culture, which was really important to him - and so he wasn’t being true to himself. The Worf / Troi relationship wouldn’t have worked long term - eventually the psychological cost to Worf of massively repressing his own Klingon nature would have built up the stress within him to unbearable levels, and he would have exploded into violence. Worf would have ended up shouting at Troi, and maybe even hitting her. Given his Klingon strength, if he’d hit her she would have been severely injured at the least - possibly even killed.

The Troi and Worf pairing always seemed to me one of the biggest mistakes in STTNG - it smacked a little of a series that has run so long it is desperate for novelty however improbable - like in sitcoms which are past their best and they do "dress-up" episodes where all the characters come on one by one in stupid costumes. Most sitcoms do an episode like that when they're wearing out and I think thr Troi-Worf pairing was STTNGs version of that.

Never made sense to me either, for exactly the reason she states. Remembering that Worf is 100% Klingon by ancestry struggling to remain culturally Klingon despite being raised by a human family, he has to abandon all of that to fit Troi's half-Betazoid template for a romantic partner. Echos of Data's foray into human romance in TNG: "In Theory".

I shipped Worf and Troi, but I can her point here and in other interviews. It would have made sense if Lt. Riker stayed on board and wooed Troi, and pissed off Commander Riker. I would have liked to see the former clean-shaven, and the latter wearing a fake beard. But for some reason the showrunners decided there couldn't be interpersonal conflict, and it had to be wrapped up by the end of the episode, but then they brought him back to turn traitor on DS9.

The only reason the Worf & Troi relationship _might've_ worked is for the same reason that the Worf & Jadzia relationship _DID_ work... she brought a playful & optimistic side to the relationship. Jadzia had the full package, though - the playfulness, the optimism, PLUS a warrior side and a familiarity with Klingon culture.

I absolutely agree with her take on this relationship. It felt forced and completely unnecessary. I have to admit, I was not a Troi fan at all. The first season was awful but got better after that. Troi was painful to watch. Marinas acting along with the terible scripts could have been the kiss of death to the show. Thankfully, what ever changed after season one saved it.

@Omni Entertainment: No such TV episode nor film. They kind of got together to begin their relationship near the end of _The Next Generation's_ run, and that was the last of that. There was never any follow up on that, and the films went on with no mention nor inkling, as if it never happened. Their spliting up is never seen at all, and no details whatsoever are thereafter told in _Star Trek._ Details?: Unknown. I'm quite sure that it probably should stay that way. P.S.: I kind of miss _Omni_ magazine, a publication not about Entertainment but about Science. Remember it, hm...?

Peter David did his best with Imzadi 2 to explain why Worf/Troi didn't work and he broke them up in it. They wouldn't let him put Imzadi back together though and the book isn't considered canon.

Yeah it could have worked but the direction and dynamic needed to be different. Maybe a little kinkier than TNG was ready to go. Even when DS9 tried to push the envelope on sexuality, it always came off as so subdued and tame. It's really in moments like that where you remember that you're on network TV, more than with the lack of gore.

Can't say I disagree. Worf and Dax made sense, because Dax was more warlike and able to match him in aggression. The Dax symbiote knew Klingon culture, new Klingon weaponry and fighting styles, and Worf didn't have to level down to be with her because she was more of a warrior. She was formidable in a way which would appeal to Worf. There was a lot about her which Klingons would respect. Troi was the opposite. She was empathetic, not a warrior, and Worf had to change to be with her, shedding a lot of what made him Worf. There was a tremendous amount in Troi that humans may respect, but not Klingons. It just made no sense.

I agree 1000%. Sucks that Jadzia died but their relationship was best because she was also a worrier who understood his culture and she challenged Worf more. Deanna and Will always made sense because she’s the psychologist with peace and love and he’s reckless at times and very funny.

But that assumes Klingon women are not attractive at all. However as we've seen throughout the series that's really not the case. The Klingon diplomat woman who died early on in the series I think was really the best match for him. Cultural compatibility really was Worfs biggest issue, because really not many other women besides a Klingon woman could really understand Klingon culture, as Martoks wife pointed out. That said Jadzia was a great match for Worf since she was Kurzon the Klingon diplomat in a past life.
@jmwoods190
@jmwoods190 10 ай бұрын
K'Ehleyr(the diplomat woman) was actually half Human+Klingon(as was B'Elanna Torres in Voyager), and she had much less regard for Klingon traditions than either Worf or Jadzia. Had it been K'Ehleyr marrying Worf(assuming she survived instead) in DS9 S6 Sirella would've fought her to death, as K'Ehleyr was even more headstrong than Jadzia! What made her such a match for Worf was that she was also someone that didn't fit in either the Klingon Empire or the Federation, and she truly had his back just like Jadzia did!
