Yup, here's a little story for ya: I was stationed at one of the gates in Camp Pendleton (the midway point between the one leading to Oceanside and the furthest North gate, it's been over a decade, don't remember the name) while I was working with PMO in '07. A huge convoy of brand new Army humvees drives through the gate. 5 minutes later, another huge convoy of brand new Air Force humvees follows. It starts to rain, and 5 minutes later a convoy of Marine Corps humvees come through. The lead vehicle had strings tied to the windshield wipers, and in order to operate them, the driver would pull one string, and then the front passenger would pull the other to bring them back down. Over and over. My fellow Marines and I on the gate saw this, and we were like, "Yeah, seems about right." It was the perfect illustration.

I still stay at military lodging when I travel (USA RET). What I've learned is the Marines have deserts, the Army has swamps and pine trees, the USAF has golf courses and the Navy, beaches.

When I was active in the Marine Corps we used to always say "I have done so much with so little for so long, I am now qualified to do absolutely everything with nothing at all".

USAF guy here. Usually, we see the Marines “tactfully acquire” our gear when they need assistance. It’s funny for sure.

My HS buddy and I entered the service on the same date, he went Marine Infantry and I went Army Infantry. We had many similar experiences in boot camp and in garrison but the differences came when it came down to equipment and opportunities. In the Army we had all of the latest equipment as where he said they got the Army hand-me-downs. By the time we were halfway through our initial enlistments, I had already been to Airborne and Air Assualt school as to where he was still hoping to fly in a helicopter. Needless to say, the lack of opportunity to go to high-speed schools and other high-speed units was the main reason he did not reenlist after his 4 years was up. I stayed in an additional 2 years until I got broken up in Afghanistan and had a choice to get out on medical or reclass to some POG mos.

I was army for 15 years. The difference are slight depending on the missions and time period. I love my Marine brothers and sisters but I've never lost a fight to one and when we were stationed together on the battlefield we both had a go hard or go home attitude. The Army is just bigger so the perceived weaknesses are due to some support elements not being as hardcore, but elements like combat arms, maintenance, and special operations operate at the same tempo. We do tend to keep more troops that the Corp would probably cut but it's because like it was stated, we're bigger. Dicipline depends on the command. I've saw undisciplined Marines just like I've saw undiciplined Soldiers, but the Army would give more chances.

Im in the army and honestly we kinda do a lot of things on the cheap as well, most of the equipment we use is at least 10-15 years old, Our vehicles are mostly from the 80s or early 90s. There are probably more modern stuff out there but I think the specialized units get them first and then the rest of us maybe get them a sometime down the line. Even the new uniforms, like the pinks&greens everyone keeps talking about, Id be willing to bet ill be out of the army before that shit reaches my unit. Marines are definitely more intense batch of guys but thats definitely a good thing.

75th Ranger regiment is not the regular Army

I am a Army Parachute Infantryman, and having fought and trained besides Marines was one great experience, we learned lots from one another. I felt like me and my boys benefited more from them than the other way around, the junior leadership was simply top notch we absolutely believed that in a fight our advanced equipment could give us the edge if we could nullify their violence of action. I loved working and fighting alongside them it was lots of fun.

I am currently in the Army, however I am a former Marine. I was out for 17 years from the Marines before joining the Army. I am always asked why I joined the Army and not back in the Marines. I tell them the Marines are for the young and bold. I am old and careful now plus after 17 years of being out, I didn't have to goto bootcamp a second time when I joined the Army..

It depends on your MOS. I was in combat arms, main battle tanks in the U.S. Army. While stationed in Germany we were a part of the rapid deployment force.

I don't know how things are now, but when I came back from a deployment with the 18th Airborne Corp thirty years ago on a Navy ship, we ran into a Marine platoon that came in on Chinooks. They did seem lighter armed with older weapons than an infantry platoon. I hope things have changed. By the way the motto of the 18th ABN was anywhere in the world in 18 hours and they sure lived up to it.

The new marine organisation reminds me of modern German “groups” being made from up to 12 soldiers and subdivided into two “troops”. Traditionally one being led by the assistant commander. It seems the hard fighting in the Middle East causes an adaption of more decentralised command structures on the field.

When I was in the Marines in the mid to late 80's the marines were HARD CHARGERS AND PROFESSIONAL no question but todays Marines are not only hard Chargers When I was embedded with the marines in Afghanistan I WAS IMPRESSED with how much more TECHNICAL AND Intelligent they are today. I was impressed. Even the Officers were WAY MORE Professional and Intelligent but the Enlisted were MUCH MORE technically trained and intelligent today than in years past.

I told my grandfather (1st MEF Marines WW2) when I was 10 I’d like to join the Army some day. He said if I were joining today I’d enlist in the navy because they always ate and always had a bed to sleep in. After a few deployments and many years later in my 30’s medically retired and my body is paying for it. Touché grandpa, I should’ve taken that advice.

When the Marines can deploy within 18 hrs like airborne units do then id say they are the first to go per conventional force.

One of my close friends was a Marine. He and I went to school together and became instant friends since we were both Veterans. I was in the Army. We still poke fun at each other. In any downrange scenario we'd have each other's backs for sure.

I just finished 20 years in the Army. I was ready to join the Marines but the thing that held me back is my dad (former Army) heard bad things about Paris Island. I have worked with Marines and have always respected their drive and love for what they do. Looking back I wish I had gone Marines.

When I was in the Corps, we were using the M16A2. I remember our unit got "new" M16s. They were actually used Navy M16s (may as well been new). I had never seen a black M16 before that. The ones we had were darkish gray and silver.

Funny story about the Marines being cheap. This was back in the late '80s. Got back to the barracks one day and noticed that we had new furniture in the common areas. I said "cool" and sat down to relax on the new sofa. It was then I noticed that although the sofa looked new, there was some minor wear with it. The S4 guy was still there and I asked him where the new furniture came from. He said they found out the air force were renovating some of their barracks over at Seymour Johnson and were throwing out all the old furniture. Naturally, we were more than happy to take it off their hands. Gotta love the cheapskate Corps.

I'm from a family where we have 5 Marines, 1 Sailor, and 3 Army. I'm the Sailor. I know what my Son and Grandsons do in the USMC, my Father and Uncles in the WW2 & Korea. I went through SERE training with 2 Army Rangers and they were outstanding! So I have nothing but the highest respect for them all.

There’s plenty of marines that literally avoid war but just wanted the title. It all depends on MOS. Lots of Army guys who battled the enemy get called weak by a marine who stood behind eggs and bread his whole career

I think the best way to look at the difference between the Army and the Corps is the Marines are like a shock force, while the Armys' purpose is to occupy and hold a position that the Marines cannot because of their lesser numbers. As a retired Army E-7, I tend to look at the Marines as generally better troops, because in bad situations some of the Armys' individuals leave something to be desired. In Vietnam, I dealt with Marines on several occasions and was very impressed.

I have been saying this for years as a Marine myself. "Marines have been doing more with less since 1775."

I was in the Canadian Infantry and exercises with the Marines, they seemed the most like how we did things, cheap and tough lol.

I remember for Operation Dessert Shield, dad was stationed in Okinawa at the time, and his unit was in Kuwait less than 24 hours later. He never did say how they were transported, if by ship or airdrop. I never did ask either.

I was stationed in 29 Palms with 1st Tank Bn. We bought all our Humvees and tanks used from the Army. We cross trained with the Army at Fort Irwin. All there Humvees were new, and had two radios, a GPS and everyone had NVGs. We had used Humvees and only the section leaders and above had two radios, GPS and only one PVS-7 per vehicle. We were still using map and compass to navigate. I saw that the Army wasn't as ready to fight as we were. Being a Marine 0352 (TOW Gunner), from Pvt on up we can assemble and accurately fire a TOW missile system. The Army unit we trained with, trains TOW gunners at Corporal rank and above. So in the Army, if the gunner gets taken out the Pvt that is driving isn't trained to fire the TOW missile system. He can only drive away or hopefully there is another Corporal or Sgt that is trained in the Humvee. The Army unit that we trained with didn't know how to navigate with map and compass. We had to give them a refresher course, because there GPS wasn't working. That was the whole problem that I saw with the Army, is that they are too dependent on technology. I always did my navigation with a map and compass, either on foot and by vehicle. I was never issued a GPS. There was one time having a GPS would have helped me. It was at night, and the visibility was low. There was very little ambient light and the nvg's were not helping at all. But, I was able to get within 75 yards of my grid. I think the military as a whole needs to get back to basics and learn to do more with less.

I've never had any animosity for the marines I've been stationed with I just felt bad for them sometimes. Nearly was impossible to promote compared with us over in the army (for example one of my best buddies before I enlisted was an e5 before I joined and eventually when I became e5 he was still here). Also the funding for the mission was obviously way less.
