Marine Mammals: Champions of the Deep

Beneath the surface of the ocean exists an incredibly hostile world - an icy world immersed in eternal darkness where the pressure is phenomenal. This world is the abyssal domain - the largest habitat on our planet.
Yet, some air-breathing, young-feeding marine mammals, like us, spend much of their time in this dark world. Scientists are now discovering that the depths reached by these ocean giants are much greater than previously thought.
Using transmitter beacons worn by the animals, abyssal cameras and 3D scan images, this film accompanies and illustrates a contemporary scientific revolution. Constructed according to a dramatic progression towards the abyss - from the shallowest to the deepest dive - it brings to the forefront the often unknown animals and their remarkable physiological adaptations to the pressures of the great depths.

I am the director of this show filmed in 2014-2015. To give a feedback to some of the comments, none of the figures provided in this documentary have been exceeded as of today... at least, on scientific records with tags. I agree that sperm whales probably hold the title of the deepest diving marine mammals, but this has not yet been formely proven. Interestingly, some tags now include miniature (30 grams) video camera with Led lights, but their video quality is poor and, in the abyss, they mostly see what happens just in front of them. However, deploying an array of them simultaneously could bring interesting results. More soon, as we are working on it in collaboration with scientists !

Bonjour monsieur Loyer, un très grand merci pour votre sublime documentaire et tous les autres comme « Céphalopodes le règne des ventouses ». J’aimerais savoir si durant le tournage vous avez pu discuter avec les scientifiques des baleines à bec du genre hyperoodon et Beriardus qui sont aussi de très grands apnéistes. Quant aux cachalots j’ai eu le privilège à plusieurs reprises d’évoluer à leur côté avec des scientifiques, il semblerait bien que leurs incroyables performances soient tout de même dépassées par celle du ziphius cavirostris et ce grâce à un métabolisme pouvant fonctionner en anaérobie plus longtemps (Les études françaises et anglaises disponibles sur Internet vont aussi en ce sens). En tou tcas une nouvelle fois, chapeau et merci d’avoir pu mettre en lumière ces grands animaux si peu connus du grand public 🙏🏻.

Nous avions considéré à l'époque l'opportunité de les inclure, mais, ayant déjà les mesoplodon de Blainville et baleines à bec de Cuvier, nous les avons écarté, par peur de faire des doublons. Il existe certainement des papiers qui valent le détour, et nous travaillons actuellement sur des projets qui consistent à laisser ces animaux... se filmer eux-mêmes. A suivre !

@@loyerbertrand Effectivement c’est compréhensible d’autant plus que mis à part Hal Whitehead avec les hyperoodon dans le Gully canadien, il n’y a pas beaucoup de chercheurs étudiant ces populations. Des individus se filmant eux-mêmes, super projet !! Façon crittercam en plus évoluée je présume ? Envisagez-vous d’en faire un futur documentaire ?

Excellent documentary. I was wondering how the elephant seals could navigate and hunt in the near-darkness of such depths without the benefit of biosonar - it seems that recent research at UC Santa Cruz (and undoubtedly others previously) has revealed fascinating use of their whiskers.

The ultra modern fishing boats didnt loose 30% from their catch to predators,they steal 70% from the fish which belong natural to the predators!

These animals are even more amazing in comparisons with human athletes. The elephant seals and beaked whales are diving in a far more viscous medium than humans trained to run in the best class, but the runners would require about ten vigorous minutes to travel as deep as these mammals dive, but without the hunt and return. Think about running your very hardest for ten minutes; then imagine another mammal swimming the same distance, but in the dark, while hungry and hunting for food, all without breathing, and then BACK!!? That is amazing and astonishing and head-slapping and unbelievable and incredible and I want to be them!

Breathtakingly amazing! Scientists have come such a long way in a very short time. It was only a few years ago depth of dives & breath holding were mainly guesswork. Personally just watching, even just imagining the deep deep dives of these marine mammals gives me panic attacks. 49:02

Technically the deepest diving mammal was a Cuvier’s Beaked Whale, that was documented over 3,000 meters or just shy of 2 miles under the surface however I think in general this title should go to the sperm whale, as they are the most common species of mammal associated with the deep sea!

are amazing creatures, but they are also facing many challenges. One of the biggest problems is that they are often seen as pests by fishermen, because they sometimes steal fish from fishing nets. However, orcas play an important role in the marine ecosystem, and they are also and social animals. We need to do more to protect orcas and other marine mammals, and to raise awareness of their importance. One way to protect orcas is to for the fish that they lose to orcas. This could be done through that subsidize . We can also involve the of the importance of marine mammals and sustainable fishing. Another important step is to develop better methods for identifying and tracking individual orcas. This could be done using biometric and DNA identification methods. A common database of all known orcas could help scientists to better understand their populations and movements, and to identify and track individual orcas that are at risk. I support the idea of a that would include the entire hydrosphere By taking these steps, we can help to protect orcas and other marine mammals, and ensure that they continue to thrive in our oceans Together with us.

This is an incredible species of whales i used to think that people who did this kind of research were hunters but they are not they just trying to learn about how these whales live and its amazing i never heard of these kind of whales before

I thoroughly agree! If we want to know something about some part of the world, we should not cause it harm or stress or death to it. The only solution I can provide now is to leave it alone unless you can a truly non-destructive way of measuring. Enough spearing, stealing, piercing, killing things other than ourselves to gain knowledge. We have done so much damage. I would prefer to go without more knowledge on them, to know that we are not stressing, hurting, or killing them. We've done enough damage to other species.

If the elephant seals dive to hunt at such depths, how do they find their prey. They surely cannot see in the absence of light. Do they also use echo location as whales and dolphins do. Or perhaps their eyes are capable of seeing an animal's florescence? Be an interesting answer I am sure.
