This is our DIY, Do It Yourself, 100L/hr watermaker that we built from scratch during lockdown which cost us around $1,000 (EURO) total from standard parts we bought online. I must admit, we had the High Pressure pump gifted to us, so it may cost you guys a tiny bit more, so lets round it up to about $1,500 and you have yourself a water maker for your boat that would normally cost you about $4,000-5,000.
Well, that's not entirely true, a $5,000 system will have power saving pumps, digital circuitboards with self flushing systems and alarms, but as we're going to be out in remote places traveling around the world, we wanted everything to be extremely simple and easily fixed because out here on the water we're constantly hearing everyone complain about issues with their watermakers having to wait weeks for spare parts or diagnostics.
I hope you guys learn something and enjoy the video of how we made a watermaker on our sailboat.
We are currently crossing the Atlantic Ocean but Leave a comment below and we will try answer any questions you have 🤙

UPDATE: I deleted the puppy pump and it's basically now just: Sea strainer after the seatcock - food grade hose - 20 & 5 Micron filter - food grade hose - Highpressure pump - highpressure hose - PV1 #1 - highpressure hose - PV #2. - Brine output = high pressure hose - dial - needle valve - hose - cockpit seacock. - Freshwater output = food grade tubing - TDS meter - food grade tubing. and I manually put in the tanks or fill bottles. Notes* The HP catpump has a pressure relief valve to protect it and I don't flush the watermaker after every use because we live on the boat 24/7, I use it for about 1 hr or every 30 minutes every 2 days and seems to be ok. The last membrane never went higher than 200ppm after 3 years. I only replaced the membrane because I upgraded it.

We have household R-O, and from your video, it looks like not much more is wanted to have a watermaker. I think the TDS monitor sounds great, we don't have one on the household R-O. Maybe they think upland people don't care, but we see flooding occasionally, so it makes more sense to have that than not to.

Thank you! Yes they aren’t cheap, but It’s all the stainless parts that just add up! The off the shelf water makers are just more complex with more parts which is why they cost more. Ours is just cheap because of how basic it is. I would love to compare the differences one day!

One thing you didn't mention was how many times you flush your system with fresh water and how you do it...normally there are values to allow that but I didn't see anything in your diagrams. Most commercial watermakers say to clean the system very regularly with fresh water to avoid getting a build up in the membrane...I always take product pages with a grain of salt and very interested in your real world testing. So if you give updates on how often you use the system and the maintainance it would be very useful...cheers for a great channel!

Well my watermaker has a 1hp motor and a pump that supplies 1.8 GPM at 1500 PSI at 1750 RPM. Yours is rated for 2.5gpm at 1200psi and 1725rpm. I generate around 132 liters pre hour depending on conditions. You have a 2hp motor so you could maybe go three pressure vessels and get more production. I have two and get 132 liters per hour. 3.5 gpm pump is the top end for 227 liter per hour installs with the 4" pressure vessels and 2hp motors. So you probably have 1hp more on your motor than you need for your production even adding a second pressure vessel to get up to 132 liters per hour. If you added two more pressure vessels...which this is outside my experience, but I bet you could get 160ish liters per hour with 2hp.
@SailingSunday
@SailingSunday 2 жыл бұрын
Yes by memory that sounds about right! I was going to buy 2x vessels and membranes but just thought I would start with 1 for now. But when we get to the US, I’ll buy a 2nd one then to make more water. Quick easy upgrade 😊
@SailingSunday
@SailingSunday 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you’re right, we didn’t need the 2hp motor, but it was gifted to us from our friends. I was hoping we may have got 120L out of the 1 membrane with this pump but I was dreaming lol
@allynonderdonk7577
@allynonderdonk7577 2 жыл бұрын
@@SailingSunday Having a higher capacity pump just puts more pressure on your membranes. They have a certain capacity curve for production so too big a pump they just push more waste water. Too little water and they don't produce as much. I don't know for sure but you might have enough to upgrade to a single four inch pressure vessel from the two point five. The thing is I don't know if your pump could supply enough water to get it to produce. I do know that your pump is overkill for two of the standard two and a half size pressure vessels. I've never seen a water maker with three of the two and half size ones but I'll bet your pump could make it happen.
@SailingSunday
@SailingSunday 2 жыл бұрын
@@allynonderdonk7577 haha, yes I know that now 😆. But we’re pretty happy with the 90-100L but we will definitely get an extra membrane though, just because I know we can 😀
@allynonderdonk7577
@allynonderdonk7577 2 жыл бұрын
Hey after talking with you I wondered if I could get another pressure vessel and membrane. Well no...but I think you could have three check out section 3.9.2 on the right minimum flow rates for 2.5 seawater membranes. The minimum is one gpm for a 2.5. Since you have a 2.5gpm at 1200psi I think that reducing the pressure by 1/3 to 800psi would likely result in a rise in flow rate of around one third. So 3.325 gpm for 800psi. Certainly I would think 3gpm...so 3gpm /3 membranes is 1gpm per membrane...the minimum flow rate. With likely a little left over. I don't know if the math would be correct, but if you wanted you could likely get even more production meaning less generator time with a total of three membranes. www.rainmandesal.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/dow-filmtec-sw30-manual.pdf www.pwoutlet.com/Horizontal-Shaft-Size-s/45.htm

@SailingSunday
@SailingSunday Жыл бұрын
It’s a very simple version, I don’t usually flush the membrane because we live on the boat, I use it every couple of days, but it would be better to add that in. I have just added a strainer higher up on the intake though so I could pickle it while I went to visit family a few months back. I poured the solution in the strainer while I turned it on to run the mixture through the system. When returned I just switched it all on and ran it for a few hours to get rid of the solution and replaced in pre filters again. My PPM is still hovering around 190ppm. The membrane is now approx 18 months old and still making about 100L per hr.

Hi. You've probably compared products from different manufacturers, so it would be nice if you could also tell why you choose this particular Watermaker. Is the price / quality ratio good, etc. comparisons. It's a different matter, if a company has sponsored this product for you, then there is not much weight for that choice. :)

Not really, It was difficult because bought a lot in Italy and across Europe and now I've just upgraded it to 50-60gal/hr in the US by adding another membrane... but I i'll give you some good useful info to help you. I deleted the puppy pump and it's basically now just: Sea strainer after the seatcock - food grade hose - 20 & 5 Micron filter - food grade hose - Highpressure pump - highpressure hose - PV1 #1 - highpressure hose - PV #2.
