A romantic tenor with a lovely voice

Thanks for playing this beautiful song. Saw this movie, The Seven Hills of Rome when I was still a little boy growing up in Zambia. Really brought a lump to my throat and some tears as well. Made me think of my family, Mom, dad and my only brother. My brother passed away 19-01-2023, a day before my 77th birthday. Mario Lanza was one of my most revered singers ever.

I appreciate the fact that you explore all genre's of music. Not all reactors do and it is awesome. Keep on expanding. At 73, I still remember him. I was 10 when he died. One of the singers that made me want to sing opera, lol. Never made it.😉

Mario Lanza was born Alfredo Arnaldo Cocozza in South Philadelphia in 1921. He started out as an opera singer and won scholarship to Tanglewood with the great Russian Conductor Serge Koussevitzky. He studied there and was drafter into the US Army and thereafter studied with Enrico Rosarti, who also taught Beniamino Gigli. However after a concert in 1947 he ended up being signed to MGM by Louis B. Mayor and made his first film in 1949. He last appeared in opera at the New Orleans Opera in two performances of Madama Butterfly in 1948 and was due to return to the Opera House in a performance of Tosca in 1960 at the Rome Opera House. However he passed away on October 7, 1959 at the age of 38 from a heart attack or pulmonary embolism. Mario Lanza tended to have a large appetite for food, alcohol and the ladies, however he used to have to diet to make weight to look good on screen which meant he would have to lose upwards of 50 or 60 lbs in a short space of time, which is obviously not good. So the crash dieting plus his excesses had a deleterious effect on his health leading to his death. But Man what a voice. Arturo Toscanini stated that Lanza had the greatest voice of the 20th century. And Maria Callas stated that her biggest regret was never singing with him. Not bad for an Italian boy from Philly.... Oh and Pavarotti called Lanza 'his idol', just for the opera purists out there.

Ah, yes, this is Mario's last film, For the First time. It was made right before he died, bless his heart. It's a precious movie. The girl there is his love interest eventually. And she is deaf. Methinks u will love it! He was at his best in this one. Am only 45, but my Grandma got me hooked on him at the age of 18. He is my FAVORITE singer. He was able to do it all. And his impressions of Dean Martin & Perry Como are BRILLIANT! Do some digging & get all 8 of his films. They can be a bit hard to find, but it ain't much of an issue on Amazon. He was just fabulous! 🥰

Do some more research on Lanza, please? He had, in my opinion anyway, the greatest voice of all time. Thanks for posting X

Check out him singing "Be my love", the loveliest hight of the year ", I'll walk with God", you won't be disappointed. He died in 1958 or 1959.😊

I would like to thank you for featuring Mario Lanza in your show. Awesome. I am glad you like equally his voice. I am now 83 and still listen to his songs and singing voice. Oh yes, he was a superstar during his days. I remember I daily listened to his singing from radio and phonograph. His was a big hit in those days. Try to play his singing voice from an original recording, of “ The Student Prince” Do not play this new version where the recording was awful . Get the musical recordings from the Original movie of Student Prince. You will fall in love. The new version was awful . Bad record. Use the Movie recording process by MGM.

Very similar lives mario lanza and elvis presley both good looking dudes? Both had addictions to food and alchol and both died prematurely late 30's of a heart attack but both amazing singers !!!

she was deaf. he didn't know. but in the movie, she becomes the love interest. and he does whatever he can to find a way to help her hear again. it's an amazing movie.
