Designing For is a series which looks at a level in gaming, and analyzes a theme central to that level's design. In this episode, we take a look at a mini-game in Mario Party 2, one that reminds us that random chance isn't always random design.

I loved this video. I have thought a lot about luck in games having mulled over both Richard Garfield's thesis on luck and skill and the maxim of Blizzard Entertainment that luck causes the most memorable moments in games. This was a new angle on what it means to embrace luck and I believe it highlights one recurring thought I have had. It is not luck that we enjoy, but tension. This tension can be achieved in many ways but (as far as I can see) revolves around the unknown. This tension is present in Bowser's Big blast because of all the things you talk about. It also has the benefit of raising the stakes. This little cocktail of unknowns and stake raising is what has lead poker to be an international game for many years. I, however, think this is best in games that cause players to be the unknowns to each other. Poker has a lot of this too (did he bet more because he thinks I will fold or is it because he has a really good hand) but if you want it undiluted try Avalon: the resistance. Sorry to go on so long about my own ideas, but it is my way of showing that I liked the video. Great job.

Personally, I never really found this game that scary. My heart stopper was always the rope cutting game from Mario Party 8 since there's no 3 second timer till you explode, making it way more frightening when you cut a rope. Not to mention the setting on top of a cliff.

One of my favorite brawls is a prime example of this. Pat spent the entire game winning, yet due to one dice roll and one mini game Woolie turned it all around to an upsurd degree.

I love Bowser's Big Blast and Bigger Blast. There is something so enjoyable with something just determined by luck. It's just so nice sometimes having games where all your control is taken away from you and luck is your only salvation.

Having never played any Mario Party game, Bowser's Big Blast reminds me of (what I guess to be another attempt of "remastering" by nintendo) the railroad game from Wii Party. However, the aesthetic and atmosphere of what I saw of Bowser's Big Blast is undoubtedly superior. Thanks for the video and keep the work up!

Finally someone who mentions how Bigger Blast just doesn't feel as dramatic as the original! Even the Top 100 version is lacking, despite the dramatic music returning. In the Top 100 players duck when the bomb starts ticking. But in the original version they just do their losing animation. Unlike in the Top 100, the characters are feeling just as depressed as the player and can only break down emotionally for the brief three seconds they have before being blown up. That little bit of extra personality is what really sells the original to me. Choosing right feels like a small victory but choosing wrong is truly a game over for you.

This really hit home for me, I generally loathe anything luck based since I seem to have the worst of it, but for some reason this minigame has always been really fun. Loved the analysis.

hmmm , i was hopping i could find someone explain the coding of this minigame , specifically if it takes into account the different colors of the switches or if it recognizes them as all the same thereby giving an illusion of being calculable trackable when in reality it is unbiased full rng but this video was the closest i could find to something explaining it's mechanics....

Your video is really fucking good. I loved the voice acting and everything you've gone though to make this video, The editing is on point. Don't become MatPat. That's all I can say. (also maybe get obs so you don't have a watermark zach... or crack fraps.) Anyway, your voice is just perfect with Zach's writing. I very much think Mario Party is intentionally luck based. It's a party game, as in, it's meant to be played at parties. And, if you're at a party, odds are not everyone there is familiar with video games, or very good at them. So, the game has a high luck element to ensure that any rando can, in theory, feel like a winner.

Mario Party 8's Cut from the Team gives me and my friend always pressure though every time we play she usually flies first and I right after her while one of the CPU's win lmao.

Deigning For Luck is also kind of relevant to the modern obsession with lootboxes it seems, After seeing the episode it feels like the full name should be Designing For Luck, Tension and Misdirection. Admittedly that's not a very snappy title.

Worked on adjusting the volume, mostly. I didn't notice it was as bad as it was the earlier ones because I used headphones, but I tested for speakers this time around. Though--I'm only doing the writing, gameplay footage, and editing. My voice actor didn't get a new one to my knowledge.

And then the newest Mario party ruined it by making the dramatic pause way too long. Expect that it doesn't pause that long if it's gonna blow up, sucking all the tension out of the pause and making it boring
