This reminds me why I love Bach on harpsichord. So bright & clear. These don't come across as well on piano. Who needs pianissimo with music like this anyway. As in.. Oh the loudest bit is the climax lol. Bach was much more clever than that

This is the best recording of these pieces I have ever heard. The tempo, ornamentation,overall attention to the minutia of these pieces and above all love for these pieces demonstrate Mr Pinnock’s love for Bach’s Harpsichord Partitas and his sheer devotion to making them shine. Utterly engrossing performance!

Many years ago Trevor Pinnock had a concert visit in Istanbul with the legendary J. P. Rampal. Unfortunately Mr Rampal fell ill before the concert and Mr Pinnock had to appear as a solo performer. Many visitors from the audience were refunded. I was one of the few who preferred to listen to Mr Pinnock in this occasion. It was a marvellous performance and I am his greatest fan since. Thanks for the music Trevor Pinnock.

Pinnock's performance of the Partitas on the Haenssler label is much better than his earlier recording for Deutsche Grammophon, in my opinion. I think he had relaxed a bit and gave the music more space to breathe.

One very minor quibble is the interpretation of ornaments in the Tempo Di Minuetto of the fifth partita. Otherwise, an excellent reading of these masterpieces.

Exquisite

Don't have Pinnock playing Bach, but have his Scarlatti Sonatas, and he is very good at. His sense of rythm is remarkable. With Van Asperen and Christophe Rousset, they are the three better harpsichordists (Pinnock is also a Conductor) we have, would say. 🎵🎶💙🆗👍

The harpsichord has a ge reat sonority and tone. From the beginning, we understand that Pinnock will escape the virtuosity effects. the Prelude of the first partita, and even the following Allemande are usually played a bit faster and in a more external style . In the lest movement, the virtuosity is "hidden" behind the continuous sembles expression. Also, the first movement of the second partita in C minor avoids any pre-romantic inflexion ( a premonition of Beethoven's 'Pathétique' !!!!! , as it is too often the case. This is indeed an ideal interpretation, ranking for instance with Leonhardt, etc.

All interpretation aside, this is a superb recording. I wonder what kind of microphone and mic placement was used!

I have this (on Hanssler) - wonderfully plangent, refreshing, mesmerising. Q is, how do the piano versions compare? I have the Goldbergs, WTC I & II, Fr & English Suites all on pianoforte; the Partitas, Italian Conc & French Overture all on harpsichord. What shld I buy next - piano or harpsichord? I need to know, on a strictly need-to-know basis!
