Maris Liepa dances Crassus in Khachaturian's "Spartacus"

16 жыл бұрынI've discovered that videos featuring Māris Liepa, one of the most acclaimed Soviet ballet dancers, are disappoitingly few here on YT, so I decided to improve the situation. ;)
"Spartacus", ballet by Aram Khachaturian, choreography by Yuri Grigorovitch.
The Moscow Bolshoi Theatre, 1960s; Māris Liepa as revengeful Crassus (one of his best roles), Nina Timofeeva as Aegina.

Agreed. Very little of Maris Liepa available. He had charisma and great talents in other fields. He and Vladimir Vasiliev were outstanding. Thank you for posting.

Обожаю этот балет. Эгина появляется на миг, но уже виден её характер. А Красс - это ого! Видела других крассов - все они жидковаты; ни один не дотянул до такого уровня. Сравниться может только Красс из фильма в исполнении Лоуренса Оливье - но это совсем другой жанр.

У Мариса Лиепа после премьеры "Спартака" была популярность необыкновенная. Я ничего подобного больше не видел ни у кого. В Самаре, где я рос, все киоски "Союзпечати" были оклеены его снимками. И я в изумлении, мне было лет десять, читал: балет "Спартак", Красс - Лиепа. Просто фантастика!

А сейчас фанаты Полунина (из которого такой же Красс, как из Промокашки скрипач) капают слюной на его "ах, фантастические прыжки". Балет превратился в соревнования по спортивной гимнастике. Искусства там - как в производстве пылесосов.

Балет от закрытия его большевиками спасла Ваганова, по отцу армянка, она же заложила основу новой балетной школы. Ее бы в нынешней России называли бы чуркой, а Хачатуряна - хачом.

@csofan52 There's no historical evidence to back up your claim of him being insane or a megalomaniac. If he hadn't put down the slave revolt, there were plenty of other Patricians who were ready to do it. In fact, the Roman Republic and the Senate wouldn't have tolerated a situation in which Spartacus' rebellion went unsuppressed.

Maris was my Uncle, he was pure Latvian, he was FORCED to dance for the Bolshoi Balett he was surpressed by the Communinist Terror regime and they forced him to dance for bolshoi . I was pure Latvian and hated thr russians and communism, Yes they all sarted being forced to the Bbolshi Ballet and they learned and helped them . But almost all of them were fleeing fron this communist pressure, taking away your freedom. Nurejew fleed and got a Austrian Citizenship, baryshnikov fleed and became a US Citizen , My personal Friends Valery and Galina Panova Fleed ant the list goes on.......Maris gave my Mother ´his Tie Clip covered with Bernstein and closed her hands and said never ever forget where you come from and who you are. God bless Maris , and to all the others HE WAS PURE LATVIAN AND HE HATED THE COMMUNISTS !

titanic performace .yes l agree and l hate too the communist regime in russia and everywhere but from an artistic point of wiew maris liepa had a lot back joining bolshoi this must be recognized .he did grat bolshoi with vasiliev and the other great males of that time ,but bolshoi made great him .personally during a trip in russia in 79 l knew another great dancer that started in latvia l belive john markovsky

l also saw the panovs in london in 78 and despite all they had to suffer and two years of forced inactivity were still impressive galina so lovely and valeri so manly and still athletic ,in his prime ,at his top when with kirov he was a stunning dancer ,here on yt there is a video of 60's where he already performs double entrelache in don q solo.have a look

Forced to dance in Bolshoi?)))) No, of course.)) Before he got there he had being transfered to the Moscow ballet school and after his graduation he planned to stay in Moscow but the Latvian Ministry of Culture demanded his return to Latvia. At the same time Maya Plisetskaya invited him to be her partner in Swan Lake during the Bolshoi tour in Budapest. After that they married in 1956 but divorced 3 months later. )) After that Liepa accepted an invitation of the second ballet theater in Moscow called Staniskavsky and Nemirovitch-Danchenko and danced there for 4 seasons as a premier dancer. And only after a tour to Poland he was invited to Bolshoi in 1960-61. Seems like he loved Bolshoi more than anything in his life because he suffered a great deal after he was fired from there in the age of 45 and died being only 53 y.o. He was burried in the famous Moscow cemetery. In Latvia he only started his ballet educationl, it;s all. ) His both children Ilze and Andris Liepa also danced in Bolshoi but it was after the end of the USSR.
