Maritime Innovation In Miniature: HMS Royal George

Жыл бұрынThe Royal George was filmed in the Board Room of the National Maritime Museum, in the Park Row wing of the building. The model is usually on public display in a gallery and was brought into the room by a team of conservators and placed on a table in the centre of the room, which allowed the film crew a full 360-degree access to this remarkable work of art. It is without question one of the finest ship models of the eighteenth century.

Capsize? She was broken up for scrap in 1822.

She capsized at Spithead anchorage in the Solent. Heeled over to have a new chain pump fitted, whilst taking on supplies from the opposite side. Allegedly through the gunports. She took on water, rolled onto the tender alongside and then sank taking 800 souls including Admiral Kempenfelt, 1 mile from the shoreline.

@@capnkit This is one version but a courtsmarshal said the officers and crew were not to blame and that the ship had become unstable due to the poor state of its timbers. I suspect something of both explanations is true.
