Agreeing with Mark, one of the biggest struggles in college is learning how to learn. Most kids that dont learn this skill drop out. Once you learn how to digest the information you are receive in your class, success is then simply down to how bad you want it.

Of course, not. Working hard to get ahead is the biggest myth ever perpetuated. If hard work made you rich, day laborers would be the wealthiest folks on earth. In fact, it's usually the opposite - the more physically demanding the job is, the less it usually earns.

right now I'm watching mark Cuban with Dave Ramsey. I'm laughing because although my 4 kids are all young adults now. I told them very similar work ethics that Marc and Dave have told their kids. my kids grew up hearing me remind them constantly. grades are the "money" teachers pay you until you get a job. the better grades you make, the more $ you'll make. they all new the rule. you had to graduate high school & then get trained in something. if it takes a 2 year college, a 4 year college, or simply a training school. that's up to them. but they have to go beyond the high school deploma in their knowledge and schooling. I have to say the most frustrating thing to me. was when my daughter was in 5th grade and my oldest son was in 3rd grade. I had to keep my eye on the school & make sure they were helping my daughter as much as possible. I also had to put pressure on them to challenge my son. he was bringing 100% home on pretests. when I told them to excellerate him but I absolutely did not want to put him in the next grade. I was told they couldn't. when he finally brought home an "F" on a pretest. he was in tears & I wanted to put it on the fridge. I was so excited he thought I had lost my mind. I looked at him & asked if he knew what it meant. I said it means you don't know the material &are actually going to learn something. when I went into the school I told them that if they didn't challange him. he was going to get into high school, be bored out of his mind & start entertaining himself.

One of the things that should come out of this pandemic experience is the exposing of the fact that we don't need many of the $500 million campus we have today. A lot of what is taught in university campus can just as well and much more efficiently be taught online. You need science labs and other specialized facilities for some classes but not for history, math, language, etc. In some ways we still approach education like we did in the early 20th century. It's a total waste of time, resources and money.

Student loan debt 100% agree. I agree, we should be encouraging life long learning. Most first time college students do not even know how to balance a checkbook, do not understand the different a subsidized and unsubsidized loan, or even have never taken out a loan before- they do not fully understand what kind of hole they are digging themselves into. To take out 100,000 in students loans to graduate with a degree worth $35,000 is absolute insanity. The bubble will burst. It’s not a question of IF but WHEN.

I heard a story about an (at the time) 8-year-old girl who wanted a horse, but her family was concerned she's get bored with it and not take proper care of it after the first week or two. So, her parents told her that she could have a horse if she could buy it herself. So she earned and saved enough money to buy the neighbors cow, trained and cared for that cow and entered it in state fairs and won a bunch of prize money, which she saved. By the time she was 9 years old, she sold her cow for the rest of the money she needed to buy a horse. Needless to say, she took REALLY good care of that horse, and all the other horses she bought herself in the future.

Hope this encourages prospective college students to brainstorm other options: Community college + state/federal grants + living at home for two years + sharing rooms/rent at the university + personal savings + sharing rooms/rent at grad school + partial academic scholarship + part-time job = No debt from college nor seminary. It is possible with compromises and planning and living within means and...some beans/rice dinners along the way! ;-)

Getting a college education was adventitious from 1900-1980. After that the number of people going to college went through the roof...and so has the cost. You would be forever better off starting a career (pick any company) right out of high school and start moving up the ranks of that company rather than going 100K in debt going to college and losing 4-5 years of a salary forever. Just in the first 4-5 years of your career you will make more than the 100K you would of spent on college (a swing of 200K!). If you want to become a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or accountant...college cannot be avoided. But if you are interested in anything else, buy a small HOUSE with the college fund your parents saved instead and start making money right out of the gate rather than going massively into debt. The University system is way overdue for a massive drop in attendance. All of these expensive campuses they are building will be empty soon with the rise in online courses, and good riddance. Millennials (and a lot of Gen Xers) will be sure to tell their kids how going to college and acquiring a ton of debt, ruined their life and gave them little to no advantage in the workforce.

Hey Dave most investors work for somebody, ie government or corporations who own the inventor’s patents! My Dad was well known worldwide for his inventions. Yes he earned well. That said his inventions are still making big $ for his former employer. This is the same for all those amazing patented inventions that Bell Laboratory employees created. That said, Dad loved what he did and to my knowledge he never complained. I miss him dearly.
