You Probably recently seen Mark Dacascos as the villain Zero in John Wick 3. Prior to that, he had a really good run in the 1990s, starting with Only The Strong and then following it up with Double Dragon. He was all set to take the late Brandon Lee's lead as the go to guy for 20th Century Fox action movies.
Welcome to Part 4 of 5 of Martial Arts Movies Stars of the 90s that weren't Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Seagal. Mark Dacascos is a lifelong martial artist who has won numerous karate and kung fu championships between the ages of 7 and 18. This should not be a surprise, as his father, Al Dacascos is a martial arts instructor, who created his own martial arts style called Wun Hop Kuen Do. In addition to that, his step mother, Malia Bernal was a martial arts champion and the first female to appear on the cover of Black Belt Magazine in September of 1974.
Although having 2 martial arts Champions and instructors in the house while growing up, Mark Dacascos says Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee were huge influences for him; in fact, Jackie Chan was the one that inspired him to get into gymnastics. This just goes to show how powerful movies are, especially to a young impressionable mind.
As far as physical stats go, Mark Dacascos is 5’9”, which is right up there with Jean-Claude Van Damme, as well as Tae Kwon Do sensation Philip Rhee, who I previously covered on part 2 of this series on this channel.
As far as what Mark Dacascos weighs; he’s kept a pretty consistent build his entire career and is athletic and lean, weighing in the 150s; so he definitely has a physique more akin to Philip Rhee, both of whom are less muscled up than the muscles from Brussels, Jean Claude Van Damme.
Mark Dacascos is what Hollywood would say is Ethnically ambiguous. There’s a very interesting article in Flickering Myth.com that talks about this:
www.flickeringmyth.com/2018/0...
“There’s a certain indefinable quality that works for some in Hollywood (Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), but puts studios off in others, which is seemingly (the case for Dacascos). This undoubtedly worked against him. Not “white” enough to play an all-American hero, and not “Asian” enough to play those roles set aside for Asian-American actors in the 90’s (which were predominantly villains).
Casting standpoint aside, Mark Dacascos certainly has an interesting background, he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father, Al Dacascos, was of Filipino, Spanish and Chinese descent, while his mother was of Irish and Japanese descent. In Hawaii, this is known as being a Hapa, a term which originated in the 1800s and initially meant being “half”, but later just meant being “mixed”, when referring to someone of mixed European and Asian and/or Pacific Islander descent.
So Mark Dacascos was cast in the theatrically released Only The Strong, which was actually an important film, as it introduced the world to a new martial art, never before seen in American cinemas, Brazilian Capoeira.
The writer and director of Only The Strong was the same guy that wrote Bloodsport. Prior to Only the Strong, Sheldon Lettich not only wrote Bloodport, but also Rambo 3, another action classic; he would then go on to write and direct Lionheart, and then Double Impact; by far 2 of Van Dammes greatest action films!
So Mark Dacascos trained in Capoeira for 2 months with Mestre Amen Santo before officially auditioning for the role in Only The Strong; this was followed by an additional 5 months of training after landing the role.
Mark Dacascos showed real charm and charisma as the lead; the story had a good message, the action was fun and exciting, as we have just never seen this sort of style of martial art in any film; it was like seeing Aikido for the first time when Steven Seagal burst on the scene with Above The Law; it was just different. The film had a real budget, which just helps everything shine; however, the problem was the marketing, it was never really given a fair shot.
Case in point, here’s an interview with Sheldon Lettich:
ultimateactionmovies.com/inte...
Although Mark Dacascos never became a household name, or even as big an action star as Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Seagal, he still ended up with what would be considered a successful career in film and television.
As far as television goes, you could make the argument that he’s found even more success in that arena, appearing in numerous series, such as The Crow: Stairway to Heaven in the late 90s, 2008’s The Legend of Bruce Lee as a Thai Boxer, Mortal Kombat Legacy in 2013 as Kung Lao, he’s also had a recurring role in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Wu Assassins and Hawaii Five-0. You may have also seen him in the Iron Chef series as The Chairman.

Bro, I’m so glad I’ve found your channel. I was looking for some interesting trivia about Stallone (my role-model, btw) and then I saw your other videos packed with all my childhood heroes. I actually thought that I was the only one who still remembers Jeff Speakman and Thomas Ian Griffith. We are two of a kind. And you have this awesome video about Mark Dacascos. I’ve always liked the guy and he was fantastic in Only the Strong, Drive, Crying Freeman and Sabotage. Boogie Boy was cool too. He had a huge potential and I’ve expected him to become one of the top action heroes, but sadly it never happened. Too bad Stallone hasn’t invited him for The Expendables, but that chance still exists. Well, let me guess who will be #1 on this list - if you don’t want to go with Don “The Dragon” Wilson or amazing Brandon Lee, then it has to be Jeff Wincott. He had great physique and was very athletic, so he definitely deserves this spot. Michael Dudikoff can’t really be called a martial artist at all, so I’m sure his name won’t pop up. Great job and I’ll definitely keep an eye on your work from now on. And who knows, maybe we even end up being action heroes as well some day. They definitely need fresh blood and both of us are in good shape for sure. All the best! 👍

What’s worse is that it wasn’t even Mark’s fault, if this video is anything to go by; it seems as if the film world shafted him with poor marketing. _Drive_ is another film of his that I would highly recommend. Despite the budget being quite low, he is brilliant in that and his martial arts and gymnastic capabilities were showcased properly. I would advise watching the Director’s Cut as this adds some additional scenes that give the film some heart, instead of being the generic actioner that it could be accused of being without those scenes.

Interestingly it had a fairly big push in the UK in the summer of 94. I remember most of my friends saw it. It felt to me at the time like a real big budget film and it wasn’t lost amongst some of the amazing films that year. It seemed like they were really grooming Dacascos to be something special. I saw it at the cinema and don’t think I’ve seen it since.

Mark Dacascos doesn’t get nearly the amount of attention he so deserves. Not only did women think that he was incredibly good-looking, but he has a great on-screen presence (especially with those eyes of his), and unlike a lot of those 1990s martial-arts actors from that part of the world, he could put in a pretty good acting performance. _Drive_ remains my favourite film of his from that particular era, although I am quite intrigued by _Only the Strong._

Mark Dacascos is a very impressive martial artist and his talent on figth scenes its solid. Unfortunately he never stars a great sucess on therms the box office, made his name on the second team from action movies at 90. Recently he co-star on "John Wich 3" as a bad guy, but i wondering if he made sucess with 1995 "Crying Freeman" the story maybe be difference. In my opinion this movie direct by Cristophe Gans is the best work from Dacascos until this days and still a great action movie.

Whatever befell _Crying Freeman,_ one thing that he is most likely grateful for is that the film was where he met actress Julie Condra, whom he later married and to whom he is still married to this day, if the official Instagram pages for both of them are anything to go by. My favourite 1990s film with Mark in it is _Drive,_ especially the Director’s Cut, and I also thought he was superb in _American Samurai,_ in which he played the lead villain, with David Bradley playing the protagonist. _Drive_ is phenomenal, and really showcased Mark’s abilities fantastically. Hard to believe that the budget was just USD3.5m and it all seems so slick. I found _Crying Freeman_ rather empty and drab, with rather bad acting, and Mark not being used to his fullest potential. He was just right for the part, but I just felt his talents were underused in that film, not helped by the fact that I had seen the original Japanese anime not long beforehand and enjoyed it.

Oddly enough, my favorite movie with Mark is Brotherhood of the Wolf. It was one of those films with the trope of the "mysterious, exotic sidekick" being vastly more skilled than the lead character. His character "Mani" was far more intriguing than the lead, and he stole every scene he was in. Sure, I'd seen him in other roles before that, but it was his role in that film that stood out the most for me. For more recent roles, his turn as Giyera on Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had a similar effect, where his martial arts skills weren't even the reason that he stole the scenes - scenes which depended on his presence and his skill as an actor. It would've been nice to see Mark break out into stardom with Only the Strong; however, we have to remember that those kinds of roles were dying out in box-office draw at the time. He came in on the tail end of it, so I'm not sure how long that stardom would've lasted.

Great martial artist with good screen presence and some thoroughly enjoyable films especially Only the Strong and I liked Brotherhood of the Wolf too.

I'm possibly meeting him next month. I train with Mestre Amen, remotely, who taught him. Definitely bringing my Only the Strong hard copy hoping for an autograph from both. Haha

for some strange reason, Mark actually resembles the Iate Brandon Lee and would have been the perfect replacement for him. I can think of no other.

Mark Dascasco also was guest star in Hawaii 50. He was "Wo Phat" master of the Yakuza. Wo Phat and Steven Mcgarrett (Alex O'Loughlin).

Tom De Wyn I totally agree. It was actually the fans on the internet who requested a fight scene between Jet Li and Mark Dacascos. I was totally hyped for the fight scene but left disappointed. So much potential but so underwhelming.

I was a huge fan of Mark Dacascos during the 90’s and still am. I can’t tell you how many times I watched Only the Strong. Because of Mark I took up Capoeira and trained for 2 years and got good at it. I bought two copies of Only the Strong on VHS because they had two different covers. I even bought the soundtrack on cd. In high school I made a presentation about Capoeira and then showed the intro clip from Only the Strong with Mark and Mestre Santo. It was a shame Mark didn’t become a huge star as he could’ve been the next Brandon Lee. However, beside Only the Strong, I love Drive, Crying Freeman and Brotherhood of the Wolf. And he was excellent as the John Wick fanboy/villain in John Wick 3. Great work and great channel! I just subscribed!

I started my martial arts journey at the age of 5 after seeing Bruce Lee on VHS. That was my first martial arts love affair. But my true love came shortly after when I discovered old Hong Kong kungfu movies 💯 Jackie Chan is my favorite but if it wasn’t for Bruce, my journey probably would’ve been totally different 🙏🏼✊🏼❤💯

Mark Dacascos is one of my favorite under rated Martial Arts Movie Stars. Only the Strong introduced me to him and Capoeira. He was excellent in Brotherhood of the Wolf. He has been on my must meet in person list since I was 13... I'm turning 40 this year lol but I follow him on Instagram so getting close

I just finished watching only the strong today, I think it would of been cool if van damme had a fight with Mark dacascos and it would be interesting to see who comes out on top, I think there's so many martial arts actor's van damme could of made movie's with and didn't get a chance too.
