As a Newcastle fan, I can honestly say it wasn't a case of Villa being bad. You could see how good a team they are today. They have a great manager in Emery who will take them places. It was more that Newcastle were insanely ridiculously good. I was speechless for most of the game

I and many others would have been happy with 7-8th last season anything in the top half would have been great, I’ll happily take 6th or 7th this season. Realistically it means that we will probably win a European cup next season if we finish in those spots too ;)

Newcastle is absolutely the big outsider for the premier league title and also in the Champions League they are going to be hard to beat. Great that they are going for English players and a fantastic English coach. They set a great example for the other PL clubs.

As a Manchester United supporter I can confidently say that Newcastle United will provide Manchester United the new challenge for the title - not City or Arsenal. I think people who write off Newcastle are morons. They can't get their anti-Saudi biases out of their asses. They don't want to admit that the Black and White is back in force, and are a club to watch for this season and beyond. I look forward to our matches with Newcastle at Old Tradford and the next...just like the Nineties when it was Sir Alex versus Keegan. Those were the days!!!

We're not just hard to beat at St James Park, we're hard to beat full stop. Unbeaten in pre season, just 5 league defeats last season including away draws at Arsenal and Man Utd. Our only let down last year was too many draws e.g. 2x Bournemouth, 2 x Palace, 2 x Leeds, 1 x Leicester, 1 x West Ham etc i.e. against bottom half teams we dropped lots of points - 14 draws in total. If we can convert them to wins, we have a good chance of CL football again. HWTL

Don't underestimate Newcastle there in the top 4 last season for a reason. Pundits will be proven wrong . As a fan Europe acceptable but I think top 4 again. I respect goldbridge comments on Newcastle even though he's a united fan. Both clubs top 4.

Villa like all teams has a period of about 10-15 mins mid-way through the first half and that was it. If you look back at the game Villa fans will say they could have scored 3 or 4 and that true but Newcastle could have scored 8 or 9.

Villa had their moments, but were beaten by a much better side today. The gulf in class in the final 3rd between us and Villa was obvious, we were totally ruthless and should have had 6 or 7.

At the end of the day Villa have 8 first team players out injured. 2 season Enders. Fielding a weakened side and then playing so openly was never gonna end well. Having said that it was the same last season. Villa are more than capable of doing the same to Newcastle at Villa park. Since we already saw it happen. But realistically we’re gonna need to get some players back from injury otherwise it’s going to really derail us this season.

👏👏👏 my thoughts exactly. I think we’ll likely see a drop off but the media talk this summer has been borderline insulting to Newcastle. We’re a decent team. We look like we’ve been smart in the market. We’ve been in top 4 form for 1.5 seasons now. We finished the season before last in the form that Villa were in but no one was saying we’d do anything last year. Suddenly the pundits are all hyping Villa for CL. Villa are a good team but it’s unnecessary pressure on them (rather them than us though). Carragher on the Overlap downplaying our transfers because we spent £40m on a proven PL winger rather than £60+ on a foreign unknown. I don’t think we’ll repeat last season but I do think we’re capable of it. Whoever gets those 5 CL spots it’s gonna be hard won for sure. City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea, Villa, Spurs, Brighton and Newcastle……buckle up. We’re in for a silly season of football.

I'm a gooner.. This is exactly why my club sacked Emery.. the football was just chaos.. the midfield and defense was too open.. attacking players trying to do too much on the ball.. Emery needs his players to work harder than any other team to defense and attack.. turnovers ahppen a lot.. players become fatigued.. etc..

I'm a Newcastle fan and today was amazing. However, it is just the first game of the season. There is no way we can start bigging ourselves up just yet. For me personally, when/if we ever do the double over Liverpool is when I will know we have properly arrived.

I think they have been massively disrespected by certain people there's pundits who say they wont get top 4/6 hell Adam mckola said 10th and there's transfers have been poor!!! They have got an excellent squad that finished 4th and now we have signed 3 player's that not only add to our squad with different abilities but are suited to our playing style Sandro Tonali what a player he looks. If Newcastle are lucky with injury i think they will get top 4 again.

Slightly missing the point - the question with Newcastle is whether they can maintain their form when they're playing in the Champions League and juggling their squad with the Weds/Sat grind later in the season, one very impressive victory in the opening game at home doesn't change that. Let's see where everyone is come Xmas.

When Newcastle were last in the Champions League, that season they finished 3rd, and they played 12 Champions League games coz they got to the 2nd group stage. Newcastle will play at least 6. And Newcastle's squad is without doubt stronger than Sir Bobby's boys. Not saying Newcastle will get top 4 or 5, I'll be happy with 7th, but who's to say they won't? It happened the last time.

I am a Newcastle fan its only 1 game gone. Our problem will be when European football kicks in. With the high energy/intensity wee play at we deffo need more depth. Possibly a left back i would go for Kieran Tierney on a loan deal with a view to buy. Also need a Right sided Centre back. Possibly then i would expect us to do as well as last season

Well said Mark. It well annoyed me the way everyone (including Talksports very own Crooky) wrote Newcastle off simply because we’ve got a few extra games to play this season. Well if yesterday’s game is anything to go by (and yes I know it’s just the first game) then Newcastle are in for a very decent season. Thanks for your objective and non-biased opinions mate.

Not to rain on Newcastle’s parade, but until European competitions start we just don’t know. I do think Newcastle will do well this season, but until we find out their CL group and until they start playing in it, it’s still a bit of an unknown.

Setting those high standards at home is great for us but our fans need to stop getting carried away! That’s the issue. Not just pundits. Villa have defensive weaknesses. We had lots of excitement, energy and fitness. When our fitness and energy dipped last season sometimes we dropped points. Eddie says that’s the key. He keeps saying it. We took advantage of our energy and fitness and crushed them. But this is a high standard now. Just stay grounded.

Mate. No you didn’t. You put them into 6th place in your predictions, after previously saying they were here to stay in top 4 after they broke into it last season. This year they are going to be more realistic title challengers than arsenal. Watch what happens next week against city
