Dave Duncan tells stories about when he met Mark Gonzales in 1985 - it's so cool hearing skateboarding history first-hand from someone who was there in the thick of it. Dave was a pro skater and then team manager for Alva and tells us how he became an announcer for contests. We also talk about how skaters became am / pro in the 1980s without social media or camera phones! Remember, video cameras were newish tech and cost thousands of dollars to own one back then! Check out all of the cool vintage footage & photos of Dave and the Gonz from the 70's 80's and 90's.
Mark Gonzalez, also known as "The Gonz" is a legendary professional skateboarder and artist. Born on June 1, 1968, in South Gate, California, Mark Gonzalez is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of skateboarding. He turned professional in the late 1980s and quickly gained recognition for his unique and innovative style on a skateboard.
Gonzalez has been a pioneer in street skateboarding, known for his creativity, fluidity, and ability to incorporate elements of freestyle and street skating into his tricks. Beyond his contributions to skateboarding, Mark Gonzalez is also an accomplished artist, working in various mediums such as painting and sculpture. His artistic endeavors often reflect his skateboarding ethos, and he has exhibited his work in galleries around the world.
Mark Gonzalez's impact on skateboarding and the broader skate culture is significant, and he remains an influential and respected figure in both the skateboarding and art communities.

@@user-kn9ci5zm2p not an understatement. Mark Gonzales, Natas Kaupas, Rodney Mullen, Steve Rocco, Neil Blender, Jeff Philips, Monty Nolder, Jay Smith, Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Ed Nadalin, Steve Olson. A few names in a long list of dudes and chicks who made a big impact for the culture of skating with acts that seem small at the time but end up being a huge cause and effect in the long run.

49 and still can't find anything close to the cultural/psychological anomaly that is skateboarding. As a 35+ year skater, I'm glad that skateboarding has allowed me to gauge other things in terms of their radness, but nothing has ever materialized as fecund, dense, and fucking gnarly as skateboarding. I've seen less wack shit and more love from this community than anywhere else over my years. What a great check-in throughout life. Just from 3rd person alone, bodies on the line and art in the oven... so much gratitude. Oops - and Mark G. My understanding the of the visceral state is almost entirely by way of this homie. Gonz was always a gnarly oscillation at every iteration. He's definitely as stream of consciousness as it gets. I wish he made a techno-hiphop-panflute album, though. Love.

Vert was king in the 80's but my dude was MG. 90% of the boards I skated in the 80's were Vision Gonz boards.

double D has been everywhere and done everything twice, knows how to party and still shows up to do his job in the morning somehow. He is a legend for many reasons. Dude needs his own documentary . also Deville, It would be cool if you could find some old footage and make a video about the old skate zone in Goleta back in the 90"s that was our home and johnny Oliver was the man. i lost all my footage and people need to know how rad that indoor skatepark really was designed. taj ma wall !!!

Shit yeah. Paved his own path in skateboarding, art and beyond. Mullen, Natas and Gonz pretty much created modern street skating. Grateful I lived and skated through this era. Good times. Getting old is lame, plus harder to skate😮 Keep rippin' old timers.

I love that Duncan mentioned Gonz might be on the spectrum. I am autistic and skateboarding has always been the place I fit in most. Skateboarders are inclusive of weirdos like me because skateboarding has been shaped by weirdos like me. I love that

That's the first time I ever heard about Gonz been dyslexic , I only knew him as the grand Master of Skateboarding, the godfather of street skate, the genius, da mf g.o.a.t.
@DYNE540
@DYNE540 4 ай бұрын
IFF the dyslexia piece is true then matks artistic nature, sk8 ability, and behavior makes more sense. autism, adhd, dyslexia are like a family in the same house. sometimes you can have dyslexia + adhd which is a challenging life. or you can just have one of the neurodivergent disorders.

I saw Duncans tshirt and thought "oh I remember black flys (from the mid 90s), I wonder what their website looks like?" -Fuq! -it looks bad! I'm loving these gonz vids where fools are talking about Gonz and Gonz is nowhere in sight. I'll click imediately on interview's about him with whoever's willing to spill the beans, its good content. "yeah sure I'll talk about Gonz's dyslexia" -Duncan obviously is a person with decent intentions. I just found that funny. "homeless kid" lol
