Jay, as a new (adult) student of the sax i think Mr Gross's point that everyone learns at their own pace, we just need to keep moving forward is so importaint. it is so easy for every one of us to listen to much to our selfcritical voice and become discouraged. Keep bring such great interviews.

I so agree with this. I'm not new but I'm returning to saxophone after 10 years. I constantly remind myself, it's the journey that matters!

I wish back when I was studying music that my professors explained improv to me in this way. My misconception of improv made the artistry of jazz a frustration, but between listening to the two of you discuss the process and watching the videos you've posted over the last few years I'm beginning to understand. You have really helped to demystify this art form for me. Thank you.

Incredible interview! Elvin Jones' story of playing in THE quartet! Dizzy's story of playing with Bird! Mr. Heath & Coltrane's conclusion after listening to Bird -- 'if that's how you play alto -- we'll play tenor!' Ha.

Love ur reeds, I’ve been experimenting for a while now with tenor sax reeds and these reeds just flow so nicely. My highschool jazz band has played some pretty fun pieces and these reeds are awesome for them.

I've listened to every single studio album and live album that Apple Music has for Cannonball Adderley. He was great! I'm convinced that you can't be a fan of Julian Cannonball" Adderley and not respect Nat Adderley as well. They were such a team!

Jay, I think you reached with Mark, a similar level of content to when Jaleel Shaw shared that Roy Haynes said to him, "I could play any rhythm behind Charlie Parker or John Coltrane and they wouldn't miss a beat. Their sense of time was so independent."

Hello, I have been thinking about buying a soprano saxophone that is one piece (you can’t take off the neck from the body). I don’t know how I could clean it though. Do you have any ideas? Great video!

you can pass a swab for a neck or mouthpiece through in many cases. You have to be careful that it doesn't get stuck though. If it does, take something made of wood or plastic to poke it back out.

I don’t consider myself a jazz player at all. I’m R&B, soul, pop, funk etc. I know some standards and I can hit a few licks in jazz but not enough to call myself a jazz player. Most of it I don’t understand.
