A phenomenal piece, with eclectic style of vision, sound, and mood. This movie offers novelties with a lasting impression on the viewer. It's hard to imagine any authentic criticisms against this movie, only critics enviously bittered by the emergence of such a brilliant work.

I'm not a film critic, and although there are some posts on here from people who either are or wish they were, I just know whether or not a film keeps me watching. I couldn't take my eyes off this one. It has a mesmerizing quality, at least for me.

That is very honest and modest of you. I do call myself a film buff among friends and couldn’t take my eyes off either. It is not only mesmerising but hypnotising. A film to be experienced not watched.

It's a very "cool" movie and I don't hate it, but like someone else said there is no plot or character arcs. So essentially nothing happens. That might drive American movie goers crazy but I commend the creators for trying something different.

I personally don’t see any similarities of a western, having a few scenes with a western score don’t make it one. And this movie as is much an Iranian movie, as Snowpiercer is a Korean movie, having an amerian-iranian director with choppy dialogue of Farsi doesn’t make this an Iranian movie. Btw this movie was produced by Vice, that should be a warning in it self
@bennoclassico
@bennoclassico 9 жыл бұрын
BilboB Agreed. Just because there's a lack of actors in your film to fill the set doesn't mean it's a Western. It's only Western in that it's essentially an American film in Iranian garb...and definitely not a Western in genre terms.
@kly45
@kly45 8 жыл бұрын
+velocirapta There are definitely similarities, you just have to be a bit more perceptive. Nobody's saying that the lack of actors = a western. The use of music and lack of dialogue/overly long takes of reactions and and staring has a lot in common with the style of Sergio Leone's westerns. Additionally, the way the vampire appeared between scenes out of seemingly nowhere to take revenge reminded me of Charles Bronson's character in Once Upon a Time in the West.

I've just seen this. Liked it a lot; cool soundtrack with a very weird vibe that constantly wrong-foots you. Made me feel a little sorry for Ryan Gosling though; this is how you do it Ryan lol. This is how you turn your genre fetishes into something entirely your own. Really did remind me of Jim Jarmusch throughout [the guitar sounds had an almost Dead Man feel to it], also reminded me of David Lynch; the principle male character made me think of James [I think that's his name] in Twin Peaks. All in all good - stylish and pulpy in all the right ways :)

The film’s black & white visuals are unforgettable & stylish as the film’s well acted, well crafted, stylish & original as the film’s comparable to Let The Right One In (2008) & the film’s one of the best subtitled horror films ever made. (95%) (5/5 stars) (positive)

It's a 30 minute student film project stretched out over feature length, that does nothing but hit hipster marks (vintage vinyl, twenty-somethings with skateboards, a guy who looks like that guy from "Die Antwoord", etc) and has as much to do with Iranian film-making as Turkish Star Wars. Ponderous, flatly acted, painfully derivative (it doesn't just lift shots from "Nadja", "Eraserhead" and "Near Dark", it repeats the same ripped off shot about a dozen times apiece) and has about the same semiotic depth as a bad graphic novel. However, the acting from the cat is excellent. You should worry when a cat is the best actor in your film.

So what you're saying is that if the film is overstuffed with references to other well known and much better movies then this film is obviously great? I found "A Girl...." dry, unimaginative and painfully pretentious. A movie in search of a story line. A movie that is cool to like...But it's all so subjective isn't it.

+Vebinz to be honest, the amount of regulations and rules they have in Iran when it comes to filmmaking and what you can and can't show on screen somewhat limits Iranian cinema. Check out an Iranian filmmaker called Jafar Panahi it'll explain what i mean

Terrible film. Cherry-picking from vague influences, with absolutely no depth and was cringing throughout. Just because it's in black and white, or the dialogue is in Farsi, doesn't mean it's 'interesting'. It isn't a Western, or a horror, and definitely not a great example of feminist cinema. It's most certainly all style and no substance - I am befuddled by the good reviews!

velocirapta I was also thoroughly disappointed watched it on netflix last night, based on Kermodes review, it has a few horror elements, but it is definitely not a horror movie, I was expecting a western horror movie, which sounded great, but is neither. I also don’t understand why Kermode mentions Lynch, there were basically two scenes with the construction site, where there were those sound effects he talked about, thought from this review it would be played throughout the movie to create tension or unsettlement. Basically everything Kermode mentioned in this review is not in the movie (enough).
@bennoclassico
@bennoclassico 9 жыл бұрын
Yep, it was less than the sum of its parts from both a writing/thematic and stylistic angle. Kermode frustrates me when he praises something like this because it's almost as if he's just in love with the idea of the film rather than the content of it - something everybody's guilty of now and then, but in this case it's so obvious how uninspired this film is. I think way too much attention has been put on the film, and perhaps Kermode has been caught up in the hype. It's distinctly worse-than-average filmmaking, and I don't exactly expect Amirpour to surprise me with a masterpiece next time around.

velocirapta I enjoyed it a lot. I think the film contains a lot to think about - the story itself isn't particularly complex, but if you start thinking about the film as a film (and not as a narrative) it is a lot more interesting. Also, no, it isn't a Western, or a horror, but I don't see how that is a bad thing.
