What do you think Mark thought about Guy Ritchie getting his hands on one of the most beloved characters in the history of Western civilization and casting Robert Downey Jr. in the title role?

I like the fact that Mark Kermode did seem to be genuinely pleased to have derived pleasure from a Guy Ritchie film! Could the infamous sea have parted? Personally I can see where Mark is coming from on some points. I liked Lock Stock and Snatch and thought they were interestingly done and amusing. Sure, its all geezers and guns, but I first watched it as almost a caricature of that world, and it was funny, it was only when I realised Ritchie was serious about it that I began to worry.

The woman is Irene Adler... the only woman Holmes has ever admired. And the only woman who ever got the better of him. See "Scandal in Bohemia" So - not a thrown-in character put in there as a sop to the American audience.
@garymitchell58994 жыл бұрын
There is admiration between the two, but certainly no question of love, because it wouldn't work, and it doesn't here. She is used here purely as a sop to American audiences, and it doesn't work.

I am with Mark on this one! I thought this film was great and enjoyed the second one as well.... In the past I have found Guy Ritchie's movies about London's underworld very uninteresting and think it cements a poor genre of British cinema that has crossed over to Hollywood also.... I think Snatch might have been the most bearable about of them and like the concept of a cross-over narrative film but just never felt he could do it well! That said this film was a great piece of cinematography, acting and most importantly scriptwriting!

Well it's like with James Bond; nobody wanted to see a grittier version after the Pierce Brosnan era, but it took Daniel Craig and Casino Royale to prove them wrong. What I like about the clip is their timing. Most comedies nowadays are totally lacking in this department. The snappiness of their relationship is on display beautifully there; you really get a sense of interplay. Maybe because Law and Downey really know what they're doing unlike the geezers Ritchie normally works with.

The film’s issues are the direction & its length, however the film’s well acted, stylish, well scored & the set pieces seem realistic. (74%) (3.5/5 stars) (positive)

Is the Kermode/Mayo show coming to an end?
@TulseLuper14 жыл бұрын
@skinwalkerxxx True, but to me, Downey is only ever as good as his straight men/women. He needs solid actors to be his anchor while he goes crazy (i.e. Val Kilmer in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Gwyneth in Iron Man, Jude Law in this.)

WTF does Irene Adler being in the movie have to do with appeasing Americans? She's been in pretty much every Sherlock Holmes production ever made and is entertaining because Holmes rarely meets anyone that can fluster him. She plays a central part in the movie and was portrayed beautifully by McAdams.
