He used to be rated well .. but fell out of the public eye and is under rated now. Even on classics chart voting he is near bottom of the list under no-names. ... He could teach these young folks a thing or two about guitar playing ... especially his multi finger style. I credit him with some of my skills. I copied him. Him and Tommy Emmanuel transformed my abilities.

There is so many egotistical people in the music business, who are not half the creative musical genius that Mark Knopfler is, where as Mark is just a level headed working class guy who’s music has touched so many people, including myself, I hope he knows how loved and respected he is.

@@ageingfast you're absolutely right... but I don't know that "working class" was intended as a pejorative. I would tend to agree with the earlier poster that Mark maintains a grounded, middle-class (perhaps we can agree on that term) attitude and appears to have remarkably little ego issues given his stature. A succinct version might be that he's not seemed to let success go to his head.

Like any artful masterpiece this ballad never gets old. This song inspired me throughout my end stage heart failure from 42 to 52, when every breath had become a laborious task. This song gave me hope that blissful peace and rest wasn't far away, making peace with dying is the most liberating thought I've ever had, incredibly I was one of the very few extremely fortunate ones who received a heart transplant..... even though I don't feel like "a young man sitting in an old man's bar waiting for my chance to die" anymore, this song still moves me in ways which are hard to comprehend, and my adopted heart cherishes this masterpiece as much as my old worn out and discarded one. Thank you Mark you'll never know how many people you have helped with your unbelievable talent and brilliant humility. Bless you my man! Peace and love to everyone reading this comment.

Thank you for sharing your story. Im glad you are all right and hope you live a long and fullfilling life. I am also in a position to say that my life would be nowhere where it is today if not for the strength Mark's music was able to grant me. His unbelievable guitar talent was what inspired me to improve on the instrument and push boundaries. Yet many of the stories he told us are relatable in almost unreplicable way. The gift of music is one to be cherished and I am truly glad we are able to use it in order to create beauty, it is one of the few things that truly makes me feel that there is a deeper meaning in life, almost in a spiritual way.

RIP to Local Hero Richard A. "Dick" Samuels. He died in May 2021 at the age of 77 from a sudden illness related to COVID-19. He was my railroad coworker, and a mentor to me. He was a true gentleman, a legend, larger than life person. He was a Trail Blazer in the best sense of the word. It's a devastating loss for me, because I knew him since 1998. He was a Local Hero to everybody who knew him, myself included. Gone, but not forgotten. Clear Tracks and High Green on the big railroad in the sky. Two Bells.

A couple of years ago I had to arrange my old mum's funeral , we both loved lively music , I,m a Mike Oldfield devotee , but I have this music on vinyl , I used various tracks that meant a lot to her during life , she was part Scots yet never knew it , so we assembled to Mike Oldfield's Tattoo , quietly played as background music, then her favourite Tom Jones track as 6 massive blokes that she knew every one of carried her coffin in , The Green Green Grass Of Home , a couple of carefully placed other tracks , as part of the service , then , the same big guys , all smartly scrubbed up , carried her coffin out again to this main theme , as she really was " Going Home " . The big blokes are all my lifelong mates , & we were allowed to have the service in a tiny but very picturesque Norman Estate Church that is normally closed , mum was born on that estate & married my late Dad there , & this music seemed to fit perfectly , my advice to anyone else thinking of doing this , just go for it . A very kind neighbour . a celebrity D.J. arranged the music for nothing , such is the value of long - term good neighbours .

+Mark Knopfler I was 8 years old when this song came out. And I don't believe I knew what goosebumps were until then. I remember seeing Dire Straits when they cam to my town when I was 11. To tell the truth, I was outside in the carpark of the outdoor stadium with my father and his friends sitting on the bonnet of our car with those who missed out on tickets. When they finished playing this song one of the guys we were with exclaimed "Well I can die happy now!" I was in total agreement. To this day, this song can give me goosebumps upon goosebumps no problem at all. This song is the best song, unequivocally, ever written.

Strangely reassuring and unforgettable tune, and that extremely well mixed with the atmosphere of one the best films ever produced in and about Scotland, starring Burt Lancaster in the last significant role in his long acting career. In all respects, Local Hero was one hell of a remarklable film.

3:23 until 3.28. The phrasing in those five seconds is just pure musical genius. If you weren't sure before, this is the moment when - if you're a musician - you absolutely know that this could only be the late, great, legendary Michael Brecker playing that saxophone line.

Mark is a Scot and he brings the heart of Scotland into this music. I love Scotland and visit it more than any other place on my vacations, I feel Marks love for his home country in this piece...it moves my heart like no other full instrumental guitar solo. 💖🎸🎵🎶🎵🎶 I am visiting Scotland later this week and will be sitting on the banks of Loch Awe and Loch Lomond and strolling on the coasts of Loch Fynne even going up to Ben Nevis on the gondolier and I will be playing this wonderful music whilst I am there on my device...taking in the wonderful Scottish air....there's no place like it. 💕

My all time favorite. August 4th 1985. I was 28 years old. Pine Knob Clarkston, Michigan Brothers in Arms tour and I was for ever in love with Dire Straights and of Course Mark Knopfler. I love the music as much today as I did then. I was a young Mom of one back in those days. Now my oldest will be 41 this September. I went on to have 4 grandchildren. Two of may sons played the Brothers In Arm CD when they proposed to their future wives. Ride Across the River and I was hooked for ever. Mark I love your music so much better than the rest. I will listen to your music until the end.

I remember seeing this 'little' film purely by chance, late one night on TV long ago. It, I think, more than any other inspiration, made me more environmentally aware of the future of our little blue ball. I really love the movie itself, the cast, the setting, the story, the message.., but this song.. Ohhh, this song.. starts so soft and gentle, almost melancholic. Then it changes tempo, becomes decidedly upbeat, and leaves one with a good feeling deep inside. Thank you Mark for such a wonderfully beautiful 'little' song for this 'little' film.

Io sono un estimatore da sempre sei dire straits e di mark knopfler, uno dei più grandi chitarristi del mondo. A 72 anni compiuti suona ancora da dio. Se gli metti in mano un micio vileda e capace di estrarre musica anche da quello. The best of mark knopfler. ❤
