LYRICS (Mark Knopfler)
We only knew each other by letter
I went to meet her off the train
When the smoke had cleared and the dust was still
She was standing there and speaking my name
I guarantee she looked like an angel
I couldn’t think of what I should say
When Adam saw Eve in the garden
I believe he felt the selfsame way
I handed her up on the wagon
And I loaded up her trunk behind
She was sitting up there with the gold in her hair
And I tried to get a hold of my mind
Think you could love me Mary
Think we got a chance of a life
Do you think you could love me Mary
Now you are to be my wife
We finally headed out of the station
And we drove up the home trail
And when we came on the farm she laid a hand on my arm
I thought my resolution would fail
And I froze as she stepped in the doorway
Stood there as still as could be
I said I know it ain’t much, it needs a woman’s touch
Lord, she turned around and looked at me
Think you could love me Mary
Think we got a chance of a life
Do you think you could love me Mary
Now you are to be my wife
We had a prairie wedding
There was a preacher and a neighbour or two
I gave my golden thing a gold wedding ring
And the both of us said I do
When the sun’s going down on the prairie
And the gold in her hair is aflame
I say do you really love me Mary and
I hold her and I whisper her name
Do you think you could love me Mary
Think we got a chance of a life
Do you think you could love me Mary
Now you are to be my wife

Mark's sensitivity throughout the song is surprising.... subtleties and delicate metaphors expressing the sensuality that evolves sweetly from the beginning to the final climax "And the gold in her hair is a flame.." --- my great Poet! ! 🫠❤️

This is one of the best and greatest songs ever written. As a young man from Germany, I had the chance and good luck to study at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. I took a class in Canadian Prairie Fiction and of course also developed a good sense of what prairie really means by travelling across Canada several times. This song is pure prairie spirit. It makes you feel as if standing on a vast treeless plain under an endless sky; there is both loneliness and elation. Another song of that category and quality, by the way, is Bruce Cockburn´s "Badlands Flashback", although musically it takes a totally different approach.

Hey Michael, glad you enjoyed your time on the prairies here in Western Canada. I’m Saskatchewan born but raised mostly in Alberta. Although I love going to the mountains for an adventure, there is nothing like the prairie landscape and especially the living skies. The fresh air and down to earth people make it a great place to live. If you can get over the cold and windy winter days. Anyways cheers from Slave Lake, AB

You make a lovely couple of love birds, as I say where do I fit into this beautiful preciousness of Love Peace Faith in God which Prevails over all! Exceptional Talents you have in your Music and Love! Stunning Enchantment and Magic, what happened to Emmy with Bonnie or do they approve of multiple relationships, I'm sure you would not forgive such activities! I am trying to understand what do I have to do with anything with David, Mark, I still am confused who I am talking to when I have been honest with name, date of birth, where I live, maybe foolish, but I did not lie, my feelings were genuine and I feel like someone who is pathetic and feel sorry for me! Why would anyone do this to one who tries to bring Sunshine into darkness and life and love into so much riddles and lies! Music is my only form of happiness and it has become those who I respected and loved, feeling's have reasonable price, is that the Lakota way, price for inner feeling's heart soul spirit, oh how so much has changed in little time of precious genuine honesty of Love! ❤ Called Head Games where I come from, play with heart's like toys, I was meaning for good! I only have one thing I need to live, my meds. I don't have any bad habits, no need! I have been as honest as possible, could once you give me the same repect, if you can! Love you still!⛅🎵💕 Picture with meaning of word's clearly presented in such beautiful style of consistencies! Many Thank's to you for your gentle consideration of feeling's inside of hopes!

Ok...maybe I'm pushing things too much but there's some similarity between this MK's lyrics and Van Morrison's In the Garden. Specifically in what the impact of meeting someone for the first time is concerned. Mark also wrote the lyrics for the song "Golden heart", which is one of my favourites. Of course that Van's song is a total different style and fits a totally different aim. Anyway it is a pretty song which tells a true story from the old West🤠! I'm a fan of "A little house in the prairie" and this is a lovely video for a lovely song!

I can certainly identify with this song, accidentally thrown into a situation in which, against all expectations, you fall totally, romantically, intellectually, sexually, every possible way, in love, head to toe. I tell my husband, that I met you is the only proof I accept that there is a God.

Mark Knopfler Mark, never in my wildest dreams did I think that the man himself would answer my question. Thank you so much. I am loving your work and wish o wish I had the feel for emotion that you do. I followed the link and found the words but the only reference to chords was to ultimate guitar tabs which I am not a member. Lots of posts on the web complain about that site. Am I missing something? Is there another place I should be looking?

This wasn't creepy....until my (now ex) boyfriend said that this song was romantic. Nah.....This was the desperation of another time. You think mail order brides are romantic, hit the road! Update: He messages me often, but I never reply. He's currently talking to his cat. In reality world, we get to know folks so we can have a relationship. Mail order brides are for losers.
