You can hear Mark's voice almost break up a bit when he talks about a console being thrown out or multitracks being carelessly destroyed. Dude really cares. 😭

Wanted to make it clear that no Beach Boys tapes were lost in the UMG fire and fewer than 10 multi-track tapes are even stored at Capitol or UMG (we of course have hi-res copies). The Beach Boys have always maintained control and storage of their master tapes which is why we have been able to release projects like the Pet Sounds and Smile boxes etc. Hope that helps......... Mark: Absolutely enourmous fan of your work. From The Beach Boys to Janes Addiction... it doesn't get more "L.A." (and more varied) than that. As an enourmous fan for years of all the unauthorized Unsurpassed Masters boxsets, I always wondered what was still in their vault that we HAVEN'T heard! Is there anyway you would answer a couple simple questions?! 1) Do they know who was the source for the pristine audio contained in the Unsurpassed Masters boxsets? (Not asking for a name, mind you! I've actually always been curious if they KNOW who did it!) 2) Is the Manson tape still in the Brother vault? I always thought someone would ask Steve Desper about that but it never happened. (That I'm aware of, at least.) Best wishes, and thanks!

This lifelong Brian/Beach Boys fan just can't put into words the value of the contribution I feel Mark Linett and Alan Boyd have made in our appreciation of the music these amazing guys made. I just can't imagine having never gotten to hear what these guys did to amplify those incredible original recordings. I send my undying thanks to Mark and Alan along with a request, no, an urgent plea that they try and get the band to agree to a release of the first Carnegie Hall show tapes that I have read exist. The Beach Boys unreleased Holy Grail is a vessel that has not yet been filled up!

I have often written about how much gratitude and appreciation we owe to the people who built and operated the technology which captured and preserved the music and performances. Mostly we never know their names or the roles they played, but without them all we would have nothing but fleeting memories of the past. Because of them the past is even more vibrant now than our memories could ever imagine it to be.

Lots of interesting info here. Grew up during that era and sure enough - it was made for the mono a.m. radio. That's where all of us listened before going out to buy. The period of time, from early to mid sixties stands out for me - not just because of the songs, but how they were made. I could be wrong, but I think the three/four track era has a certain something about it that comes partly from the magic track count number itself - not just musical tastes of the time. It creates a certain work flow. That work flow touches a lot of things - even performance/arrangement. I started out in my teens with an old two track that was subsequently bounced to another machine. Due to the noise floor, two/three bounces were it! No more. The final result was like taking a snapshot. No going back. That end result is often much different than the golden parachute of unlimited tracks with unlimited editing of everything imaginable. The people, ( engineers, producers, musicians, etc. ), who made those songs back then sure were impressive. They had to be - tons of money at stake. I can't even imagine the pressure. Red-light fever would've sent me packing. Imagine the talent these days trying to function in that world - or not? Anyway, great video. Love this stuff. Thanks!

This legendary producer Mark Linett sales on eBay under the name YourPlaceOrMine. When I first started producing professionally everyday back in 2013 I bought a brand new PC but despite being a PC fan boy I got tired of that PC EXTREMELY fast within a year I ended up going with Apple which is one of the best decisions I made as a producer. I ended up buying a 2010 12 core Mac Pro from Mark Linnett and by the time I was done upgrading it had 5 Hard drives, 1 which was a OWC E2 SSD, 32GB of ram (But it will support 128), amongst countless other upgrades. I eventually just recently retired it barely a year ago not because It wouldn't keep running but simply because Apple basically made them obsolete via upgrading software, drivers, etc *HEY MARK* ... You still owe me and autograph!! ;) (All of the above is a TRUE STORY)

Was well impressed with this guy in the video, he knows his eggs. You could see the experience he's picked up over the years, very talented and knowledgeable. Presented it well as well, kept it flowing, informing & entertaining along the way. I bet producers and engineers the world over will tune in to this video, peers of Mark Linett young & old learning from him. SOS while your at it, (a pun there!) if Mickey Tretow is up to it these days maybe he'll do a 30 min video. Not necessarily all about ABBA but everything else he's done. He might invite you round to his abode, no doubt he's still got a studio. He may not of had a hand in the latest ABBA tracks coming out soon, but no need to leave him out of things.

Dear Mark Linett, i saw this complete vid and find it really interesting. Just a sugestion : Why not make a kind of a 'Concert' of your pile-up of the Good Vibrations Mastertapes ? A mix of these tapes and all their the styles (Western, ... ) or at least of the Best Of or the most exquisite of them, just like a real classical concert, where you have the winds, the strings, playing all around the same theme (here : Good Vibrations in all it's styles). Why not a double Vinyl LP or double CD or somewhere on the Digital platforms... And maybe you can do this for other Beach Boys Songs of which you have also several mastertapes. Good luck and thanks in advance.

That was a fascinating insight into a subject I wish I understood better than I do. Backtracking to the topic of the U.K. 50 year copywrite issue. Whilst it easy to understand the “unfairness” of it when your discussing the likes of the Beatles , Stones , Beach Boys etc you have to factor in the groups that were great but never quite rose to be the cream of the crop and 50 years down the line just wouldn’t sell enough product to make it a viable release if everyone involved needed to be paid. By passing into the public domain it becomes a viable prospect for businessman “X” to release something that only sells 200-300 copies worldwide , at least that way it’s still being given a chance to live with people that still care rather than being locked away in a dusty vault unplayed and un-remembered because it would be expensive for the potential financial returns.

Computers are great at subtraction: given both the second to last tape and the final one you can get the difference, which will be just the new sounds. Of course maybe I misread digital extraction, and more fuss will be needed if the original mix included compression or other processing while sucking in the previous sound.

Always blows my mind thinking about the low prices the good analog gear used to fetch before they “came back” into fashion. What’s the new version of that? Will it be ADAT machines? Should we go buy up all the early Digi 001 boxes, as an investment into the near future time when everyone wants to re-recreate that sound? Serious questions lol - I want to be that older guy that says “heh heh, I got this for 15 bucks when everyone thought that analog sound was the most important thing”

in one word "No". Universal bought Capitol AFTER the Universal vault fire. The tapes lost in the Universal fire were mainly MCA, American Decca, A&M, Chess, Checker, Excello, ABC, Dunhill etc.(though it should be noted that, by the time that Universal bought the ABC/Dunhill group of labels, that the multitracks for 98% of the recordings already no longer existed, thanks to a decision by an ignorant ABC/Dunhill executive named Jay Lasker, who considered the multitracks to be of no further use.)

Great interview! Pros about the production of this video: cinematic depth of field, good editing (B-rolls, different angles), and close micing. Cons about the production: The color correction is not done well, with highlights blown out to white on skintones. Also there was clipping on the audio (how ironic!). This could have been due to improper recording technique (mic volume too high on camera or field mixer) or due to improper post-processing (gain too high or too much limiting).

@29:38 Actually it's an *Electro*-Theremin on "Good Vibrations," not a Theremin _per se_. If you Google both of those, you'll see that although they make (broadly) similar sounds, the Electro-Theremin (invented by trombonist Paul Tanner and inventor Bob Whitsell) is a VERY different looking beast, and MUCH easier to play! If you've ever had the chance to try playing a true Theremin, you'll know how darn DIFFICULT it is. But thanks to Paul and Bob, Brian - and almost every 1950s sci-fi B-movie - had it MUCH easier!

I'm surprised people don't realize this and don't kick Mark Linett's ass. I hope they relaunch these boxes with new masterings. It's like Jack Rieley said: "To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public." Is that a bathrobe he's wearing? He's a real life The Dude. Awesome work with the Beach Boys although occasionally too much reverb or treble. Those are nitpicks, otherwise, keep 'em coming! I really want to hear a legitimate release of the backing track of When Girls Get Together with sessions. There's something about that track (the 1969 version) that is hypnotic.

Kind of sad how once revered sought after gear becomes trash because of new technology. Mixing in the box currently is so advanced with amazing replicated plug ins of the old gear that outboard gear is really not needed and it will only get better. Recording we are still in the infancy for in the box. The latency and other quirks still favor classic and new outboard gear over plug ins. I guess one day will be recording 100% in the box and outboard gear will be back in the trash.
@DarkSideofSynth
@DarkSideofSynth 5 жыл бұрын
The 'funny' part though is that so many plugins try and imitate old gear whcih - as he said - has gone from trash to outwordly prices. Part of it is of course just fad, nostalgia and marketing but.... unless it's really broken, you can still use gear from many decades ago and I do too. I am seeing a tiny portion of retrocomputing affecting music as well with people ranging from not upgrading their DAW to use old versions from the '90s, old Atari STs, Mac, C64s, etc. Although, I have and love computers, I've just bought a Zoom R24 and sometimes use old hardware synths. Why? I guess it comes down to the hands-on experience, tactile feedback, less visual and more auditory focus (after all, it's music not movies) plus some nostalgia if you are old enough to have used that gear in the past. Even just pressing a button, strumming a guitar, etc. feels more real & engaging regardless of quality & end results. Humans are funny creatures ;)

@@DarkSideofSynth If I may add, software can be a pain in the rear to deal with too. The benefit of a hardware-based system...as you mentioned the Zoom...is that you can turn it on, and it works. It doesn't decide to update itself in the middle of your session. All of its functions are designed to work together and they do. I personally use and love the Tascam 2488 NEO. DAWs can do incredible things. I appreciate the powerful tools that they are. However, I am also very fond of those hardware units. Though not as full-featured as a software DAW, it is still relatively easy to get excellent results with these systems. ...But that's just me. I'd rather spend my time actually recording than messing around with computer programs that seem as if they are designed to constantly fight each other. The tactile feel of the controls is just an added bonus! Ha ha!

You're also getting generations of people coming in who have never seen/used the original gear these plugins are based on, and might not appreciate their function. This might yield creativity, might be wasted. Myself included.

Please stop screwing with the original mixes. We all know that UMG let the masters burn but stupidly remixing The Beach Boys from low-quality copies of the multitrack doesn't make people forget how deceptive UMG is or how tragic the loss was!
@yrplace18
@yrplace18 5 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid you're the one that's got it wrong..... UMG has never had any Beach Boys multi-track masters. The group has always kept control of their recordings save for the final mix masters, and while we have created first time stereo mixes of records that were originally only released in mono (Pet Sounds, Wild Honey etc), unlike the Beatles' catalog we have never remixed the original mono and stereo records. However , there are a few exceptions such as the stereo mix of the song Wendy that was remixed to remove the rather pronounced cough heard doing the solo.
@Yrplace
@Yrplace 3 жыл бұрын
wrong and wrong...no Beach Boys tapes were lost in the fire. They are and always have been held by the group. We mix from high resolution digital copies of the original tapes, not lo-res copies, and have never remixed the mono masters. We have created new first time stereo mixes of all the mono only albums like Pet Sounds , Smiley Smile etc. but those are meant to be alternate ways of hearing the music not replacements for the original mono mixes. Most importantly the stereo mixes have always been done with the input and approval of the group......
