It was actually fun watching all the teams that would try everything they could within the book, but outside the lines. I remember the huge buzz over Sterling Marlin's car sounding like an Indy car at Daytona. Heck even Sterling getting out of his car on a parked caution pullin' the fender off his left rear tire.

How does mark feel about going from driving the "Valvoline" car to driving the "Viagra" car? It was pure comedy to see Mark's fans walking around the race track in "Viagra" shirts and hats...lol

Actually rusty won the pole at phoenix in 1990 and led basically all the first 50 to 60 laps till he blew up which after that Earnhardt was untouchable. Mark Martin is still a real champion on and off the Race track.

Honestly, I think the WInston Cup 5-point bonuses for leading laps had a factor as well. If you do a deeper dive into the 1990 season stats, Mark Martin led a lap in 15 of 29 races that season, while Dale Sr. led a lap in 22 of 29. Those 7 additional races accounted for 5 bonus points each, which gave him 35 bonus points even without taking into account races where one or the other led the most laps, which was enough to cover the 26-point gap as well. With a much longer season than IROC, those can really add up.

That penalty as so many throughout history was a bad one. Everyone in that garage knew there was no edge in performance of these welds. Bad call.

The 1990 race at Atlanta was the race Bill Elliott dominated and was going to win it until a late race caution. That's when Ricky Rudd (a lap down car) crashed into Bill Elliott on pit road and killed Bill's pit crew member, Mike Rich. And injured others on Bill's pit crew including Dan Elliott. The crash on pit road significantly messed up Bill's car and it was not competitive after that. There was no way Mark Martin was going to win that race as fast as Bill Elliott was. After that tragedy, who cares about the 1990's points championship? Mark Martin and Kenny Wallace should have mentioned the tragedy that occurred at Atlanta on that day that makes Mark's points loss very insignificant in retro spec. Hopefully, Mark Martin reads this post and puts a tribute to Mike Rich in his book. The pit road speed limit that is in place today in Nascar is because of what happened that day. Bill Elliott fans are still upset about that day. Mike Rich was part of Bill Elliott's Pit Crew Champions that year. The pit crew incident killed Mike Rich and injured Bill's crew members, cost Bill the race win, and cost Bill 3rd place in the points standings that year.

Wow, Roush was down 60hp from Yates back then??!! Thats got to be about 8%, at Atlanta, that had to be 3-4 tenths just in power, plus passing ability in the race.

Or did it drive better because it was bruising flys-slow lol. The only thing worse than a bad handling car that's slow on the watch is a good driving car that's no faster! 😅

This $hit still pisses me off to this day. Not like Dale and Richard were not cheating their a$$es off back then. Put money on the crossbar inside the motor box of the #3 had a nitro bottle in it or bird shoot in the frame or the 1000 other things they did. I will say that the points loss and money I'm sure put a little birdy in the back of the head of the 6 team that nascar is now watching them. Who knows how it would have worked out in the end but there is such a thing as the butterfly affect. It's possible just that slight little breeze off its wings changed the course of destiny.

He was though. If not for the penalty over something that had never been enforced up until that point, Mark would've had him by 20 points.
